WandaVision SPOILERS thread

After last week's episode I'm thinking more than ever that Agnes is someone who is not under Wanda's spell. That she is a character whose name has been circulating (I have no clue who that is). She took the twins growth and other events in stride like it was a normal occurrence. Plus she had a few of her own quirks occur.

I'm curious why/how Vision is catching on and like some of the ideas that I've read. I did like seeing Wanda step outside the Hex.

Glad that I was not the only one who caught on to Monica's reaction to Captain Marvel being mentioned. I wonder what that was about? As you can tell from earlier, I don't know too much background. Although I have watched Captain Marvel.

The theory is that Agnes is a character named Agatha Harkness, who is a witch (actual magic powers) and had served as nanny to the Fantastic Four's children and also a mentor to Wanda. She was used primarily in the 80's during the stories where Wanda had the twins, so there may indeed be a connection. This is all speculation though.

Yeah, I caught that too. Maybe she blames Carol for her mother's death? I'm not sure. In the comics, Monica was actually the second Captain Marvel after Mar-Vell (the character who was played by Annette Bening in the move though he was a man in the comics). Carol has been Ms. Marvel first, then cycled through other codenames before becoming the current Captain Marvel.

Also, there is one thing about this show that just drives me CRAZY and it is their mispronunciation of Monica's last name. They constantly call her "Captain RAM-bo" - her last name is Rambeau. It is "ram'BO" - like LeBeau or Beaudreau, accent on the second syllable. RAMBO is Sly Stallone from First Blood! Ugh, I hate it - probably because my name is also French.

The creator of the character (I believe Monica and not Maria was the primary character) says it's pronounced "RAM-beau" like it was pronounced in Captain Marvel and WandaVision.

I wrote to him and he nicely explained his take:
I always pronounced it RAM-beau. It was also pronounced that way in the Captain Marvel movie.
My goal was to give Monica a surname that would suggest the French influence of New Orleans, and yet still be easily pronounced by non-French speakers (regardless of where they put the emphasis).

Hey, all defference to Roger Stern (I love Roger Stern!), but he's just always been mispronouncing it too. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, people in my own family say my last name wrong too. He also says that he didn't care where they put the emphasis, but there is such a thing as proper pronunciation. If he wnated Rambo, her last name should have been Rambo.

I'm actually a little surprised that this was brought up by someone other than me - all my friends think I'm crazy and don't even hear the difference when I clearly say it.

Don't get started with the pronunciation of Colbert.

Right! It's just a sticking point for me. It might not be, but every time they say "Captain RAMbeau" I hear Colonel Trautman warning them to get a good supply of body bags!

I am from South Louisiana, and I always found it interesting that the area I'm from usually put the accent on the first syllables of last name. Like Boudreaux, BOO-dreaux, but when I lived in Baton Rouge, I often heard Bou-DREAUX, same with BRU-net, etc. So I'm ok with the way they're pronouncing it on the show. But I have definitely heard names pronounced with syllables on first or last.
I've heard my son's last name pronounced 3 different ways down there....now he lives in Texas, so he just gave up trying to correct people
But I agree that the first think I think of is Rambo every time I hear it...

Aren't there several different accents in Louisiana? I heard Cajun pronunciations are often unintelligible with native French speakers.

I don't understand why her last name pronunciation is wrong when the creators decided that's how it should be pronounced. It's not like Avatar the Last Airbender.

Well, it's because words do have common and correct pronunciation. I mean, I guess it's a name, and I could spell mine "Xnop" and say it's pronounced Bob, but that wouldn't really be conducive to understanding or within the rules of our shared language construct. Rambeau is an actual surname with a commonly used pronunciation. All due respect to teh creator, but I think he just said it wrong. I've done it with plenty of names/words that I had read before i heard them said. It happens.

It doesn't represent any character who was a native French speaker. In the comics the name was from Maria Rambeau's husband as her married name. There have always been people who lived with a modified pronunciation of their names because they or their families preferred to pronounce it differently.

I've know a few people with the Spanish surname Martin, although one was from the Phillipines. I know it had a distinctive pronunciation in the native Spanish, but they always said just pronounce it "MAR-TIN" and don't try to embellish.

My family pronounces our surname incorrectly if you go by language of origin rules. I think it's pretty common in the US.

No, you're right - my family included. It's probably why I'm so sensitive to it. My last name ends in "ois" which should be pronounced "wah" not "oys" - many in my family don't even say it correctly. That still means that they are wrong.

So is Scarlet Witch turning villain or is the nosy neighbor the villain.

Hard to say. I think she is being manipulated, but in the comics they've had her go full villain before. The MCU though tends to treat their characters better than the comics do so I am thinking that in the end she will come out okay.

I think SWORD is painting her as the villain but I think someone else is behind all of this.

I would be pretty upset if they turn her evil like they've done in the comics. Marvel Comics treats their characters terribly though and never misses an opportunity to grind them down and have them take questionable to abhorrent actions. It's sad what it's become over there.

I still go back to the conversation that the neighbors were having with Vision. Agnes and ____(black) neighbor cutting the bush and wall. They knew something was different but would not share. They have a different personality than Vision’s too happy coworker that he tapped into his head.

I’m thinking Agnes is controlling things and the other neighbor is in on it. But the role Wanda plays in conjunction to theirs I do not know. Opportunists? Coincidence that Wanda chose their town?
