Anyone in the path? Looks like it will be a major hurricane by the time it makes landfall somewhere along FL Gulf Coast or panhandle. I think we will be getting some rain out of it, but the current track keeps it south of us.

I hope people are paying attention to this one. One meteorologist that I've followed on twitter for years who forecasts tropical storms around the world for private entities said that this will blow up 1-2 categories in a short period of time. He also said that it's a much larger storm than Ian from last year and could have a storm surge of 16-20 feet. That's higher than the NHC is predicting now, which is 7-11 ft in one stretch of coastline. This guy has a real knack for being right. I hope people evacuate.

It definitely looks huge from the satellite imagery, which is why we'll probably be getting a lot of rain out of it. Wherever it hits it looks like it could be bad.

All of these hurricanes can be difficult to predict. Various factors can change the intensity as well as the track of the storm. Projections too far into the future always turn out to be wrong.

Well, this one is going to hit the Florida coast in 48 hours. The problem lies more with how quickly these storms can blow up from a tropical storm, which it is now....to a major hurricane of CAT 3 or higher, which is what is forecast now. Water temps in the Gulf are 88 degrees. Floridians typically pay close attention at this time of the year, but they've basically got today and tomorrow to prepare.

How scary! I hope everyone who's in the path of this terrible storm comes out okay at the end of it.

True, but this one is not too far into the future. It’s less than two days from landfall.

They just had Ida two years ago. Couldn’t they think up another woman’s name that starts with “I”?

I think Isabel was retired.

Waiting till it starts to move. The models say landfall north of us but I never bet against mother nature. It's looking as though it might creep up to a cat 2 before it hits land.
The weather guessers have been watching this do nothing for a week. When it actually started to organize a little the other night they were beside themselves!

Who picks these names?

Idalia is a girl's name with Greek origins. The name Idalia comes with the beautiful meaning “behold the sun.” With this definition, baby will always know powerful gratitude when looking to the sky.

I thought most Idalias....go as Ida, which was a storm a couple of years ago.

NHC says Cat 3 at landfall now....115 mph.

I don't think they worry about what other name the name in question might go as.

There have been Francine and Francis in the list - either of which could go as Fran - which was retired.

There has been a Frederic which was retired in the 70s, and Fred is in the current rotation.

And Idalia replaced Irma, which hit Florida in 2017.

We had a plus sized nun named Sister Mary Idalia, and when she got mad it was worse than a hurricane.

We were learning about Atilla the Hun and some wise guys in class called her Idalia the Ton.
