$7.00 missing from room left on counter

If you don’t want the house keeping to come in then put the Do Not Disturb on even if you go to the pool.
They rightfully assumed it was a tip. We tip daily but I put it in envelopes for Mousekeeping. That way if there is a different person on they still get paid. I do $6 per day for two of us and more if it’s messy like pizza boxes or something.

Actually, it’s not a Do Not Disturb sign. Disney very purposefully changed it to a Room Occupied sign years ago. If it’s for the daily security check, they can & will come in, even if that sign is on the door. They will knock or try to time it to when the sign is off. But if they haven’t been able to get in before, they will enter even if the sign is out.

I can only answer to CL mousekeeping at the YC. They have been in the room multiple times during the day to clean, inspect or leave little treats. If I leave a daily tip it’s early, but most of the time I leave it to the end of the trip. I know that not the same person cleans the room daily. In December, one mouse keeper would clean every other day or three/ four days a week and the other mousekeeper would do the rest of the week. So tipping every day has it merits if your looking to reward the mousekeeper who does a nice job daily.

I can see how this could be very confusing. There have been a few trips, post-covid, where the housekeeping schedule at our WDW resorts has been completely unpredictable - being told they weren't coming and then they came every day or being told they were coming every day and not having anyone show up - I always felt bad because, on some occasions when I wasn't expecting anyone, I wouldn't put a tip out and then come back to the room to find it had been cleaned. At this point, I leave a tip out every day, in the morning with a clear note stating it's for housekeeping. That way, if they show up, they get a tip and if they don't show up, it's ready for the next day in case they do. I really understand, especially in a DVC unit, how this could be very confusing for a guest (OP) who left a tip out in the afternoon not expecting anyone to show up. I stay in DVC villas a lot, on cash reservations, and housekeeping has been confused many times as to what my cleaning schedule should be (confusing my room with a points room).

Yep, we were sleeping one time and they came into our room. Nothing like waking up to a stranger in your room. 😂

I think James' point was that since housekeeping had recently come in, he didn't expect anyone to come into the room on this day or at this time of day. So, he leaves the next day's tip on the counter, so he won't forget to use it. Reasonable. He comes back to the room and finds the money gone. Some people are going to be able to shrug this off-my bad, housekeeping saw the money, thought it was theirs, and took it. Lucky them. Other people get agitated and fixate a bit. People are different. It's what makes this world so wonderful. James gets agitated but handles it. He goes to the manager, addresses the problem, and gets hie money back. And, then he takes it one step further. He asks opinions, perhaps so he can handle a situation like this better next time or avoid this happening again.
I didn't see in the post that he actually got his money back. Poor CM who had to give up a tip. That's sad. And I didn't see he asked for any opinions about it either. Seemed like just a complaint post.

Once I tipped bell services $30 for bringing my luggage and groceries to my room at OKW. I'm sure the extra $5 that you wouldn't have otherwise tipped brightened that CM's day. You left it out, so that's on you. If you need more cash to tip the cast member who cleans your room tomorrow, there are ATMs at the resorts. It's $7, and you're on vacation, let it go.

It’s on one of his other threads. Said the manager reimbursed his $7. Didn’t say if the housekeeper had to give it back.

Edit: looks like the OPs other 2 threads were deleted. But in 1 his post was longer & he stated he got the $7 back.

Google “how much to tip hotel maid”, and the most common result that comes up is $1 to $5 per day. Here is one typical example:

The American Hotel & Lodging Association suggests leaving a $1-to-$5 tip per day for the housekeeping staff.

That's for a base tip. They recommend adding extra for additional circumstances. I would consider $1-5/day to be per person.

Less than $10 left out on a counter looks like a housekeeping tip.

It doesn't just LOOK like a housekeeping tip, it WAS a housekeeping tip. OP left an amount that is typical for a housekeeping tip, that he intended to use as a housekeeping tip, in a place that is exactly where a guest would put a housekeeping tip, then got mad when the wrong housekeeper took it. An appropriate response would be "oops, now I know and I won't make that mistake again" and then moving on one's life, but here we are.

I also did not know this and wouldn’t have expected housekeeping to come that late in the day. Sorry that happened.

I personally would have considered this stealing. Edit: Since there was no note with the cash.

I know some hotels have QR codes for tips but unless there is a note specifying it is a tip or the guest had checked out, taking anything from the room that doesn't belong to the hotel is theft.

We request no housekeeping during our stay and it's surprising to me the amount of people who tip housekeeping daily.

If the maid is extremely friendly, or we have specific requests for them, we might go to the bank so we can tip at the end of our stay, but we rarely carry cash since Covid.

IMO there needs to be a better system for tipping.
