Now before you all say WDW (you predictable lot :teeth:
  • I have a budget of £1000
  • I am going solo, a 28 year old female, but am not afraid of doing something adventurous
  • I don't have to spend it all, some change would be quite nice actually
  • Dates should be around 21st to 28th August 2007, so I can be somewhere nice for my birthday on the 22nd
  • I don't want to sit on a beach for a week!

So whos got some brilliant ideas for me? I really want to try something new and different. i don't mind longhaul or shorthaul.
This could get quite interesting.....

How about a city break to New York or Boston or both?

Claire ;)

With that sort of budget, most of the northern hemisphere is at your disposal....

A couple of suggestions:

1) a stay-at-home trip here in the UK - maybe a coastal break in dorset (weymouth perhaps) with a stop-off at Longleat Safari Park and Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole? Visit the Isle of Portland, take a ride on the Steam Railway out near Swanage and visit their famous chocolate shop? Alternatively, what i do on a yearly basis - incorporate at least one theme park on a sight-seeing tour of a couple of places. Last year we did Blackpool and Alton Towers, taking in Birmingham for shopping and Cadbury World. Year before, Skegness and the three parks in that area (don't do that one though - they're all crap)

2) Ireland - visit the countryside and city life in and around Dublin

3) City hopping - Budget airlines have opened up Europe in a big way! Stansted to paris, on to amsterdam, dusseldorf, prague, the possibilities are endless....

no contest - an adventure holiday in Morocco, egypt or some of the lesser known parts of spain/greece/italy
try explore holidays

Hmmm just checking and the single room supplements are rather large for NY/Boston combo :(

Claire ;)

For shorthaul then Lanzarote is nice, the island is great to explore by car and the landmarks are very interesting plus there are some gorgeous beaches to laze on for a day or so :)

Claire ;)

How about a cruise up the Nile or a trip to the West Coast of the USA - San Francisco, LA, Vegas, even Hawaii?

Yes, I would go on an organised tour/trip/holiday...

A friend of mine is single, but into walking - she has been on walking holidays to Madeira and other parts of Europe and the Med. She also did a Nordic skiing holiday from one of these adventure holiday specialists.

If you are active, then I would recommend a ski holiday> You could do a week or so in a cattered chalet.

I think that going on an organised trip is better: you get to meet people and there are people to have dinner with etc. There are organised tyours/trips in anything you fancy: site-seeing, walking, downhill skiing, maybe Egypt/Nile.

Boo

Hi
NYC for me. Not sure about Egypt. A couple of nurses could not fly back for another three days, due to riots etc.

I'd choose this one...

adventure, fun, sight seeing and all organised for you!!

I have plenty of single clients who go on these and have heard nothing but good comments, you can opt to do a 'single sex' share whereby if there are any other single girls you are automatically sharing with one of them but if its all couples you get a single room but with no extra supplements

What about climbing Killimanjaro? My daughter di this last November and had a wonderful time.

Wow, there are some great ideas here, thanks. My main problem is I only have a week and most of these tours are 9 days or more. A road trip around USA is a more practical idea for a week maybe. Anyway keep em coming, much appreciated,

How about Iceland? I have always wanted to go and a friend of mine went and loved it.

My Mum has been on two escorted tours, the first to China and the second to Peru. They are too long for this trip though. What about a Panama canal cruise, there is entertainment on board so plenty to keep you occupied or the train across Canada? http://www.rockymountaineer.com/
You could add a couple of days at the start or end of the journey.

There are tons of other cruises that you could do in a week, just depends if you like boats. You can PM me if you would like me to look for you

Thanks Emma, just had a look at the link, those Canadian train tours look fantastic, just a bit pricey I'm afraid :guilty: Will definately come back to that in the future though, looked just my sort of thing. A cruise is not a bad idea if the price is right.
Maybe for £1000 I should be looking closer to home to get more for my money

Hi

Have you thought of Rome, NYC or Washington. If you are going to NYC for more than a few nights you could also go an see Niagra Falls. We are going to NY in March for Bruce's 30th birthday. We are only going for 3 nights without the kids. Unfortunately we cant see Niagra. Apparently Canadian side is better, but they offer tours where you can see both sides. They also have a boat tour of Niagra. Or you could go to DLP for a solo trip :thumbsup2

The problem you've got with most suggestions is the old single supplement, a hotel room in NY for example will cost you double if you're on your own.
a city break in europe would be a lot cheaper flight-wise but you still encounter the single supps in the hotels. Also August is pretty much the most expensive time of the year for any holiday.
Cruising is great for singles but again the single supp can add on 50 -60%.
Cosmos Tourama do a lot of european coach tours with low single supplements but teh average age might be well above yours.
I think I'd go for a low cost flight to Venice, a cheap hotel then a train to Rome, another cheap hotel, then fly back from Rome.

Hi

I used to go on loads on holidays on my own before I met hubby. I was a travel agent and couldn't resist all the staff bargains! :rotfl2:

Anyway without a doubt the best holiday I went on was a sailing holiday. You learnt to sail a yacht and then you sail the yacht around the Greek islands. It's a 2 week holiday but many people just did the first week.

The first week is hotel based and when I went there were 14 of us who were single and we had an amazing time - the second week we chose who we wanted to share our boat with.

I made a couple of really good friends who I kept in touch with for a couple of years until they proposed! Why do male friends do that?? They spoil everything - needless to say I no longer see them!

Anyway - a fantastic holiday for a single person!
