A Disney fan family sails the Liberty of the Seas

I know this is probably overdone here, but I'm going to do another DCL vs. RCCL post. We've sailed twice on Disney: once on the Dream and once on the Fantasy, and had a great cruise both times. However, we decided to branch out and try Royal. We were curious to see whether as a family we liked cruising in general or just Disney, and wanted to try a cruise line that was a little bit more economical and offered more variety in ships and destinations.

We sailed out of Galveston on the Liberty of the Seas (which is a Freedom class ship) on March 13 for a 7 day Western Caribbean. I think Liberty is a good comparison to the Disney Dream class ships: a bit larger, but it has significant amenities. We hit Roatan, Belize City and Cozumel. I won't talk much about the ports because honestly, most Caribbean ports feel pretty similar to me, and Disney and Royal seem to hit most of the same ports. We had our 2 children with us, our 11 year old daughter and our 7 year old son (who turned 8 on the cruise!). On Disney we have always sailed in a deluxe family stateroom with verandah, but on Royal we sailed in a grand suite.

First: what does Disney do better?
There are a few items that my husband and I both agreed that Disney gives you a better experience. First, the kids clubs. I have heard nothing but great things about the RCCL kids clubs, so perhaps it was just this ship, but they were overall a letdown. The registration process on embarkation day was a nightmare. There were no signs showing you where to go on the ship (all kids needed to register in the 6-8 age Voyager club), and there was one single crew member doing the registration, so the line was huge. There were also just papers strewn around the club with no indication about what to do (you needed to fill out the paper for each kid and give it to the crew member). We waited for about 45 minutes in a very hot, stuffy room, which had us pretty irritated by the end. We much prefer Disney's process of allowing you to register in Port Canaveral before you board.

Another kids club issue was that there was one evening (formal night) when they actually filled up and our son wans't able to get in at all. Combined with the limited hours (closing from 12-2 and 5-7 on sea days) and there tended to be a big backup of parents either dropping off or picking up during crucial hours. I never saw that happen on either the Fantasy or the Dream.

Now I will say that in general, our son liked going in once he warmed up to it. They were also very accommodating with his special needs, issuing us a DECT phone (like the wave phones on Disney) so that they could get in touch with us while he was in the club. I definitely appreciated that, although I needed to know to ask for it initially. They also had some really fun games in the after hours in particular that our 11 year old daughter enjoyed attending, although that was $7/hour extra.

The other major item that Disney did better was control smokers. I assume the casino on Liberty is a big part of the issue, but the smoke pervaded frequently on the Promenade as it drifted up from the casino (it was seriously annoying to be doing a cupcake decorating class and smelling smoke!). They also had a big enclosed part of the pool deck where they allowed smoking, and it always drifted over to the hot tubs. I think it would be better if they had an open deck area where they allow smoking so that it doesn't hang over the area quite so much.

What was a draw between the two?
Food. We honestly didn't eat in the MDR on Royal, as we ended up losing out on My Time Dining and didn't feel like doing the early/late seating. We were happy with the specialty restaurants for the most part (Sabor was absolutely outstanding, though we didn't think Johnny Rocket's was as good as it should have been), and the Windjammer had a very good dinner buffet that included sushi and an awesome, huge baked warm apple pie that the crew members would put ice cream and vanilla sauce on. For breakfast and lunch I might give a slight edge to Cabanas just on variety, but we really have no issues with Windjammer. Sorrento's Pizza was decent and had good sandwiches. I thought Royal's free coffee was MUCH better than Disney's.

Stateroom. It's probably unfair to compare a regular stateroom to a suite. We were happy with our stateroom on DCL and our daughter particularly enjoyed having a top bunk. I suspect that we would have felt a bit more cramped in a regular verandah room on Royal, since they looked quite a bit smaller. We did get a rollaway bed in the suite so each kid could have their own space, and there was plenty of room for that. The beds were comfortable on both ships. But of course, the key is that for the same week, we paid $1000 less for the suite on Liberty than we were going to pay for a regular room on the Fantasy.

Service. I found the service outstanding on both ships. My husband would say that he preferred the Royal service as he felt that they were a bit less obtrusive: neither one of us enjoys the way that the waiters in the MDRs on DCL grovel (although if we'd done traditional MDR dining on Royal, we might have found the same thing). All of the people we dealt with on Royal were as enthusiastic and friendly as those on Disney.

Ship styling. The Disney ships are a bit more classic looking, and the Liberty was beautiful in more of a Vegas shiny chrome way. Liberty was fresh out of drydock and looked as perfectly maintained as any Disney ship, and I saw the same pride in the crew in taking care of her.

Where did Royal win?
First and foremost, PRICE. Again, we initially booked the Fantasy for spring break week, and were going to pay about $1000 more than we ended up paying for our grand suite on Liberty. Combine that with the fact that we were able to drive to Galveston rather than fly to Port Canaveral, and we saved a LOT. None of the issues where Disney won above are enough to make up for that price differential: we had outstanding vacations on both lines, but got a higher level of service for less money on Royal.

Second, we liked the way that the promenade was set up with shops, restaurants and bars all intermingling. It was nice to sit and have a drink at R-bar and watch people go by. On Disney it feels like all the bars are in their own little area, all the shops in another area, and everything is a bit more compartmentalized. The promenade felt like a real central area for the ship that was always buzzing with fun activity.

Third, the pool deck on Royal was much better. The splash zone is huge, the pools were much bigger than those on the Fantasy, and there were more hot tubs. I do wish they showed more movies on their big screen (they tended to show cricket matches during a lot of the day, which I can't imagine entertained their mostly Texas audience), but they did have movies each evening, sometimes with fun themed treats.

Fourth, the other activities that Royal has like the FlowRider and the rock wall. I hope Disney will add things like that into their new ships, as they were great fun and also tended to draw some of the crowds away from the pool decks and slides during busy sea days. There was also the ice rink, which we didn't visit but is generally popular.

In conclusion
We like both lines, and had equally exceptional vacations on both. However, none of the items that Disney has an advantage on could sway us to pay over $1000 more for a less upgraded room though. With a great ship and a great crew, Liberty made us realize that it was the cruise that was important, not so much the characters that appeared. I hope we have the opportunity to sail Disney again, but if we decide to get our Disney fix by visiting the parks and do our cruising with Royal or another line, I know we'll have just as a great an experience.

Let me know if you have any questions about Liberty!

We just got off the same ship as you and agree with pretty much everything you said. We have been on all 4 Disney ships in either inside or oceanview rooms & had promenade view rooms on the Liberty.

I will probably come back and add more later, but taking a quick break from work right now & thought I would check here & saw your post.

My kids are 12 & 14. My son preferred the kids club at that age on Royal and my daughter gave the slight edge to Disney. My son is more outgoing than my daughter.

I did miss the split bathrooms, although not as much as I thought I would.

My wife and I really enjoyed the nightly activities for adults. It seemed that there were more to choose from and more people out. We had the drink package (Disney's change in alcohol policy was what triggered us to switch cruise lines - even with the drink package, we were about $2000 less than what we would have paid on Disney). Even though it may have encouraged us to drink more than we would have on Disney, it was nice to be able to have a few top shelf drinks at the bar and a nice glass of wine at dinner without worry about the $10-$15 with each one we ordered.

We are going to skip a year of cruising and do other stuff, but we decided overall Royal was a better fit for us, so booked the Ben & Jerry Suite for 2018 spring break.

Ha, my daughter was totally fascinated by the Ben and Jerry's Sweet! I'll be interested to hear what you think. We didn't get the drink package, but we did get the 10 drink card the last 2 days. I don't know if you did the mixology in R-Bar, but that was pretty awesome.

I agree that there were more people out and around at night, which we enjoyed, although our 11 year old stayed at the kids club most nights later than we were out (our 8 year old was usually in bed around 10 or so, and my husband and I usually hung with him and relaxed in the room).

Thank you for your review. We are sailing on the Allure in August after having sailed on DCL 3 times and are excited to try a new ship. I truly appreciate your fair opinion on both ships because some people have opinions on RC and yet, they have never tried anything but DCL. You have tried both and stated the good and bad on both. Looking forward to the Allure for the activities for my 16 year old son to do and us to do as a family..

I would like to add the biggest thing I missed from Disney when on the Liberty last week was the DCL app. We used it a lot last year to look up what was going on, but mostly to communicate with each other. Would have really liked that, although the Liberty had interactive touch screens all over the place to look up what is going on and where.

Nice write-up. We feel the same way...we actually did Royal first (Oasis and Freedom) and then Fantasy- for how much more I paid for Disney (and this was a great VGT rate also and was still a lot more) we didn't feel the value was there. DD loved the clubs on Royal (as she did Disney) and we didn't encounter any issues with them being full. For us what was missing on Disney was pools! DD really really missed having pools as there was no way she was getting in the kids bobbing in life jackets soup. We also like the Promenade and the atmosphere in the bars/pubs on Royal. On Disney we loved Palo Brunch, FE, meet ups, DD loved Edge. We also had exceptional vacations on both, but will also get our Disney fix via time at WDW/DL, as with the cruise savings, I'm sure we can cover that time. I hope to sail Disney again, but not likely in the future with the Canadian exchange and the cruise fare prices going up and up

I agree with that. I got used to it, but I really valued having the ability to text with our daughter if she wasn't with us. We learned to be really clear about where and what time we were meeting and didn't have an issue, but it would have made things a lot easier, particularly on the last day in the movie theater when I had to leave the kids saving seats while I sprinted to the other end of the ship to the art auction to tell my husband where we were sitting!

I have heard so many good things about the kids clubs on Royal that I'm willing to chalk that one up to the ship having far more kids than usual during spring break. I suspect that if we had hung around for a little while someone would have come to pick up another child and we would have gotten in, but we weren't really willing to wait. I still think their initial registration procedure could be improved a lot.

One thing I didn't mention that I liked was that Royal puts special red wristbands on the kids with their muster station so that it's easy for the kids club people to get them to their muster location in case of emergency. I don't remember Disney being quite as clear about that process: during the drill Royal emphasized that if your children were in the club, you could proceed to the station and the crew would ensure that your kids get there.

Thanks for the comparison! We are sailing on the Liberty in August and can't wait! We have only been on one Disney cruise but since DS is older now (14) and DH and I both like to gamble, we prefer sailing RCL. Of course, those are not the only two reasons - the most notable being the one you mentioned above - PRICE!

Thanks again!

This was a great review -- loved the DCL to RCCL comparisons! Thank you for sharing your experience!

How were the waterslides in liberty? Our kids loved the aquadunk, aquaduck and the yellow slide on DCL.

Also how did the free ice cream compare?

How bad was the cigarette smoke? That is a huge issue for me, because it really makes me nauseous. Could you hang in the promenade area without smelling it?

My daughter loved the water slides. The Tidal Wave isn't open (the big one), they're having some kind of an issue with it. I saw them doing a bit of work on it but there was no real plan for when or if it would ever open to guests. There are fun small slides in the kids' splash zone as well.

The free ice cream on deck seemed ok. My husband and daughter got it pretty much every day....it looked like typical soft serve. The Ben and Jerry's is much better, though that has a charge.

I didn't always smell it in the promenade, but I did smell it frequently. It wasn't super strong, and I think I got used to it and didn't notice it much after a while. There is a staircase that comes up into the middle of the promenade from the casino that is probably the issue. If you can avoid walking through the casino on deck 4 that's where it's worst, as well as the port side of the pool deck.

Thanks. Can an 11 yr old still be in the kid splash zone or is it for toddlers? Also, how long are the lines for the two waterslides?

My 11 year old daughter and tons of other kids loved it! There is a little section for diapered babies that is split off, but the rest is for older kids. It was definitely at her level.

Slide lines were busy on sea days, but I don't think she waited more than about 20 minutes. Then again, when the lines got longer she did something else.

That's awesome.. Was this by chance a cruise where the DreamWorks characters were on board?

Absolutely! King Julian joined into our cupcake decorating class. The characters were in the sail away show as well and I saw them walking around pretty frequently. They also had scheduled appearances at least every day. They showed Kung Fu Panda 3 on the ship, and we got to see Po as well. It was nice because it felt a little bit less formal than the character meet and greets on DCL, though one could argue the characters are less iconic and the cruise wasn't really built around them.

There was also a character breakfast, but we didn't go to that so I can't say how it was.

Great to read your review! We booked liberty on this same itinerary for next Easter! My kids will be 6.5 and 10.5 when we go and it will be their second cruise (first was Royal Navigator of the Seas).

The smoking annoys me greatly - but we booked our balcony on the port side to ensure no smoking there and we definitely don't walk thru deck 4 on the inside ever...I wish there was a way to keep the smoke from escaping the casino!!

On our last cruise in 2015, the kids were OBSESSED with the kids. They insisted that we be the first ones there in the morning and the last ones to leave and they used all of their vacation 'fun money' to stay for late night events! My son also really enjoyed the flow Rider! I'm sure the slides will be a big hit too!

Did you do the cupcake class - can you share what it was like?

Did you do the cupcake class - can you share what it was like?

The class was fun, though not too exciting. My daughter is 11 so we did the adult one. We got two cupcakes, a small one and a large one. We cut a piece off the small one and layered it onto the large one, and built a dog out of it. It was a good lesson in how to use the piping bag, but I'd say half of the cupcakes fell over face first and got ruined. I wish she'd had us set up the little scaffold system that she had us do after they fell.

You had to sign a paper saying that you'd eat it within 4 hours. Truthfully, we forgot about them and ended up tossing them the next day since they had sat out for a while. That buttercream frosting mostly tasted like butter!

Here's a shot of mine just before it fell over.image.jpeg

We made hamburger and fries- they were super cute and fun and tasted pretty good! Will add a picture later
