Central Europe Trip Report-6/21

After having lunch in the restaurant at the ice cave, we made our way to Hohenwerfen castle. This was a castle originally built at as a fortification in 1075. Over the centuries it has been used as a residence for the ruler of Salzburg, a hunting lodge, and a prison among other things. Today, it is considered an adventure castle. It had stopped raining, but was still pretty cloudy on the short ride from the ice cave to the castle.

Upon arrival, you take a funicular up to the main area:

We were originally supposed to do the castle tour then the falconry show. However, the guides flipped the order not knowing what the weather would be. So, we made our way to the falconry show which was held in the garden/courtyard.

232323232fp83232_uqcshlukaxroqdfv596ot_239949699XROQDF_2_8746_2523_ot1lsi1.jpg

We really enjoyed this demonstration. There are 5 different types of birds in the show, and they do get pretty close to the audience. It actually looked pretty cool to have one of the birds come out of the clouds. At certain spots in the show, the trainers would toss food into the air and seemingly out of nowhere a bird would appear and snatch the food out of mid-air with its talons.

The 2 trainers:

After the falconry show, we waited for our tour to begin in an area where the kids could play some games. Aiden finally got going on the stilts:

We then toured the castle starting in the chapel, going by the bird training area, through many rooms, and making our way to the belltower. The following are some photos from the castle.

The final activity of this long day was to be the schnapps tasting. However, there was an issue at the factory and they had to reschedule. This was fine with us, as most people in the group were exhausted. On the way back to the hotel, we were given the option of going to the hotel or being dropped off in the town of Berchtesgaden. In our group, everyone went back to the hotel. Some in our group had made reservations at the Michelin star restaurant in the Intercontinental. We went to the pool, then ate in the bar. They have awesome burgers in the bar (not to mention the beer). As it began to clear, we finally got some great views around our hotel. The mountains around the hotel and a view of the Eagle's nest.

The sun finally sets on the day

Prior to leaving the states, we had made arrangements to paraglide in Berchtesgaden early this morning, finishing by 8:30 am, in time to leave with the group for Salzburg. However, we got a message last night from the company taking us, that due to the weather the previous day, they wouldn't be ready to fly until about 11 am (needed the sun to warm things up). They could take us then, but that would mean we would miss Salzburg which we did not want to do. So, we went to Salzburg.

After the ABD we went to Munich for 5 days. One of those days we went to Neuschwanstein castle. As luck would have it, we were able to paraglide in the Neuschwanstein area. A few photos from that experience:

Just caught up on your trip report. It's great to read how others experienced the trip and get some different viewpoints. It's also fun to see you pictures. Lots of similarities, but some fun differences in perspective, etc. I can't believe the claws on that bear! And the rain while you were hiking up to the ice cave (although it sounds like you had better weather than we did overall). Looking forward to reading the rest.

Thanks Calfan. Very much enjoyed your TR. You have been way better at posting on a regular cadence than I have. We had a couple of overcast mornings in Prague, but that was the one day of rain, so overall we can't complain. At least we got to see the views on the hike to the ice cave through your pictures.

I guess we got lucky on the July 12 trip. It only rained on the first day in Prague and this was on the last leg of the walking tour when got to the Jewish cemetery. It was very cloudy on the hike towards the cave but was crystal clear on the way down. It was extremely hot in Vienna but other than that the weather was very cooperative.

Happy to hear you had good weather. Several of the trip reports are making me very nervous about the weather for our trip next year. I know no one can predict, but at least I know it is possible to have good weather. Evidently summer is when Prague receives the most rain.

What I enjoyed greatly though aside from the tour and our group was the Stiegl beer at the Bavaria and Czech Pilsner beer. I am not a beer drinker but I enjoyed it greatly. It was cheaper than water and practically had a minimal amount of liquor in it. It was available in all of the meals provided thoughtABD and when we had meals on our own, I purchased some. Talking about meals on our own. The Berchtesgaden Interconn 360 degrees restaurant was very expensive. I think we paid more than $120 USD after conversion for my wife and I. The menu was very limited. Loved it though!!

Other than that one day, we had very good to great weather. Not too hot, not too cold and pretty sunny most days. You are in the alps, so the weather can (and does) change pretty quickly. The one day it rained, we pretty much embraced it and enjoyed the different perspective.

This had been the day that Jenn was most looking forward to. The Sound of Music tour was one of the motivations for booking this particular ABD. As a quick aside, when the von Trapp family came to America they settled in Stowe, VT. The family (great grandchildren now) still run the Trapp Family Lodge. We've been going there for the past 12 years or so. Not only is it a fun resort, the lodge is kind of like a museum for the family with hundreds of photos and personal belongings on display throughout the lodge.

After breakfast, it was off to Salzburg:

It was a relatively short drive to Salzburg, and after a restroom break we met up with our guide. Jennae had said the guide we had was the one that gave Rick Steeves the Sound of Music Tour. She was very good and told a number of stories about the filming including what Christopher Plummer was really like. When asked she would separate fact from fiction regarding the movie, but she was careful not to give away too much. Anyways, we walked to Mirabell Gardens where the Do-Re-Mi song was recorded. Some photos from Mirabell Gardens:

From Mirabell Gardens, we got on our Sound of Music tour bus and drove around the city looking at some of the filming sites and getting off a few times for photo ops:

OK, so Aiden and Rich didn't have a canoe, but you get the idea:

After finishing the Sound of Music tour, we went to Hellbrun palace where the group had lunch.

To be continued...

Great pics!

Definitely going to have to re-watch Sound of Music before I go! :)

Sayhello

After lunch at Hellbrun palace, we began our tour of the grounds and fountains.

After our tour of Hellbrun palace, we took the bus into the old town section of Salzburg for some free time before dinner. We strolled around the streets of Salzburg taking in the sites, monuments, and doing some shopping.

We then went to eat at the oldest restaurant in Europe (I think that is what they said). The walk was short, but along a pathway around St Peters.

Finally, as we waited for the bus to take us back to the Intercontinental we spotted this cat in the third story window (obviously not afraid of heights)

This was a long day, but really enjoyable. We loved Salzburg and would definitely go back.

Hi RSM,

Great photos and trip report!

Speaking of Sound of Music, you guys would have enjoyed the Tauck Bridges Blue Danube riverboat cruise with Elisabeth Von Trapp as the special guest. Elisabeth is the daughter of "Kirk" from the movie. She performed several times for us during the trip and also did a Q&A session. While in Salzburg, she and her husband took us on a private tour of Old Town while the other members of our TB group went on a tour with the local guides. Elisabeth showed us the places that she visited as a child with her grandmother during summer vacations. It was a very memorable trip.

Thanks Disfan10. Jenn would be so jealous. That must have been so cool. We have seen the great grandchildren perform at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe a couple of times. BTW--Aiden was asking if we were going to see you guys on this ABD. We'll have to hook up if we can at some point.

Have a great time Tufbuf. We really debated the Danube Family cruise versus the ABD. But, eventually defaulted to the known entity.

That's great! While it doesn't look like Elisabeth is doing the cruise this year, you'll still have a wonderful time.

One suggestion: wear sturdy shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen and water during your visit to Dürnstein Castle. It's quite a hike up to the top and it was really hot when we went in July.

Definitely!! It'll be lots of fun sharing another adventure with you guys! ::yes::

Today was our final day in the Berchtesgaden area, but we had a busy day. On today's agenda was going to the Salzbergwerk Salt Mines, a lesson in pretzel making, our re-scheduled schapps tasting, a short tour and lunch in Mondsee, then on to Vienna. So, it would be a pretty long, active day and we didn't arrive in Vienna until about 7:15 or so.

After our final chocolate waffles for breakfast at the Intercontinental Berchtesgaden and a walk around the grounds we headed to the Salt Mines. When we read about this, our initial thought was that this was a ho-hum activity. It turned out to be one of our favorite activities.

First thing was to get into our overalls to get to work:

232323232fp83232_uqcshlukaxroqdfv55_5ot_239949699XROQDF_2__992_6923_ot1lsi1.jpg

This reminded Aiden of a "salt" lego:

232323232fp83232_uqcshlukaxroqdfv328ot_239949699XROQDF_2__9_774923_ot1lsi1.jpg

After suiting up, you take a train/trolley deep into the mine. They take photos of you that you get at the end of the tour. We have the hardcopy photos, I just haven't digitized them yet. After exiting the trolley, the guide takes you on the tour of the salt mine explaining the history of the mine, the evolution of mining techniques, the salt products that are produced, etc. The route you take is pretty straight forward. It includes slides, a short boat ride, and an elevator up at the end. The guide had said that we saw only a small portion of the mine. There were dozens of other areas.

One of the first memorial displays you will see.

The small lake that you take a raft across to get to the elevator. This area looks like you are on another planet:

After finishing the salt mine tour, we had a little time in the gift shop, then headed to our pretzel making lesson. This activity was held in a relatively small bakery, but our guides said that the owner is highly sought after to train others in the art of pretzel making.

Perhaps this was the truck to deliver our pretzels:

Even the doorknobs say pretzel

Aiden rolling out the dough to make his pretzels. I think they said one of their bakers can twist 1200 pretzels per hour.

We got a tour of the bakery and the production equipment

After baking pretzels it was off to our schnapps tasting. This had been re-scheduled from the day of the ice cave and Hohenwerfen castle. Basically, the adults had a brief talk in a display room and in a room with some of the equipment. We then saw a 10 minute video of how they harvest the root for their signature schnapps. The video was actually pretty interesting. The JA's and FOJA's (friends of JA's) went outside with our guides and played.

After a busy morning, we headed to Mondsee. Mondsee is a small town in the state of Upper Austria and is located on the shore of Lake Mondsee. Upon arriving we met up with our local guide, and boarded a trolley to get into town.

Mondsee is probably best known for the cloister church where wedding was filmed in the Sound of Music. The exterior and interior of the church

We then took a short tour of the town of Mondsee and walked to lunch at a restaurant right on Lake Mondsee.

As we were going into the restaurant Aiden spotted a really cool playground with some relatively extreme playground things (compared to the US). All the kids hurried through lunch to get to the playground.

After Mondsee, we left for Vienna. We arrived in Vienna around 7:15. After checking in we went to dinner and walked around Vienna a little bit. We went to a restaurant called Figlmuller which is famous for their schnitzel. The 3 of us split one and a couple of sides. The schnitzel was huge.

We now begin the Vienna portion of our ABD.

This really does sound like quite the day! I keep skimming the Salt Mine description, because I want it to be (at least sort of) a surprise! :)

That church in Mondsee is just amazing!

Did you actually get the pretzels you made, or did you just get anonymous pretzels? :)

Sayhello

Being more than a year away, any details should fade so that you can be surprised.

You got a bag of anonymous pretzels. You could definitely tell the ones that the pros made versus the ones we made.
