Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but it's too exciting to let go unnoticed! :)

Disney gives gay couples 'Fairy Tale Weddings'

Walt Disney allows same-sex couples to enjoy popular marriage tradition by adding commitment ceremonies to policy.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- The Walt Disney Co. has changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts and cruise line, a Disney spokesman said Thursday.

Disney previously had allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World that are set aside specifically for weddings.

"We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment ceremonies," Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. "This is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for all of our guests."

Walker said the change was prompted by "an inquiry from a guest that asked about this service."

Disney had allowed gay couples to take part in its vow renewals program but excluded them from buying wedding packages by requiring a valid marriage license from California or Florida, which do not permit or recognize gay marriages.

Last month, gay Web site AfterElton.com criticized Disney for not allowing same-sex couples to participate in the Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons program.

Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding packages start at $8,000 and include a wedding planner, the ceremony, food and beverages, flowers and table decorations.

The Lavish Wedding Option also includes a ride to the ceremony in the Cinderella coach, costumed trumpeters heralding the couple's arrival, and attendance by Mickey and Minnie Mouse characters dressed in formal attire.

Disney has come under fire from religious conservatives, including the Southern Baptist Convention, which have accused the company of promoting a gay agenda.

The groups, which lifted an eight-year boycott of Disney in 2005, had criticized the company for such corporate policies as giving health benefits to same-sex partners of employees, allowing "Gay Day" celebrations at its theme parks and airing a prime time television show on its ABC network featuring openly gay comedian Ellen DeGeneres.

"We are not in the business of making judgments about the lifestyle of our guests. We are in the hospitality business and our parks and resorts are open to everyone," Walker said.

You have just given me a LOT of food for thought in terms of how to celebrate our 20 years together in 2010!

Glad I could be there for ya'! :thumbsup2

I swear, I am sitting here bawling like a baby from absolute happiness that I will finally have my own dream wedding. Gabby and I have been patiently waiting and dreaming of the time when Disney would allow us to marry, but never really thought that we would be lucky enough to see the day. She is on her way home now from the airport. She has been in PA all week. I told her about the article and literaly had my breath taken away when I started reading the article to her. She agreed that we needed to go ahead with our dream wedding plans......90% of which have been floating around my head for years in mothball covered corners of my mind. I am in shock really. But, WOW!

I have already created a doc file on my computer entitled "Our Wedding" the first file included is a copy of that article. You can bet that I won't forget this day. OMG! It's just so freakin' amazing. Maggie

I had a pretty bad taste in my mouth about Disney until reading this. Thank you for posting it, and congrats to all who plan ceremonies there. Wow, Disney is really doing the right thing. Had no idea that vow renewals were permitted all along until seeing this article.

I just called my other half (Padalyn) at work and told her the good news. Probably not the best thing to do when she is driving ....if the lights and sirens weren't on, I bet she turned them.

I wonder which fan sites/newsletters will carry the announcement. We may be about to find out who values their gay readership. Usually gay concerns are conspicuously absent. Will hope for the best.

Sorry to be slightly off topic and on a high horse; I just ate a Lindt chocolate bunny and am on a sugar low.

This is terrific. Like another poster stated , this was just about the only thing ( I can't think of anything else right now ) that had left a bad taste in my mouth about Disney and now they've changed it . Fantastic news !!!!

New Hampshire now allows Civil Unions too. Massachusetts is now also trying to repeal a 1913 law , it was put in place to prevent interracial couples marrying , to make it legal for ANY and ALL GLBT couples to get married here .

Gosh now if I was only dating someone that I could start planning a Disney wedding , OMG I have to rethink how and where I'll get married. Not that anyone's asked . I waassssss thinking getting married on a ship on the way to Provincetown and having the reception there in town. Put the whole wedding party up at one of the Inn's and spend the weekend.

Well, I fully expect and will be highly disappointed, if my news submission to allearsnet.com doesn't yield some sort of news update or at the very least some sort of a notation somewhere on the site with the information of the new inclusive guidelines on weddings & honeymoons. Deb has always been extremely sweet when I have chatted with her here and there over the years. I have a feeling that she is pretty accepting & open minded. ;) Maggie

:cool1: Wow! Great news!

I was watching the Travel Channel last weekend, and during one of the 127 hours devoted to Disney, there was a short segment on the Fairy Tale Weddings. Have to admit- I started to daydream about how great it would be for DP and I to get married there.

How cool is it that now we have the option!!!?:thumbsup2

This post had me nearly in tears!

Congratulations and have fun planning the wedding of your DREAMS!!!

If it's a Jewish wedding the couple can stomp on a refillable mug! (Not referring to your wedding, Maggie, but to the weddings in general. No offense intended to anyone. Am speaking as a Jew and am just trying to refer humorously to the practice of stomping on a wine glass at a wedding, but Disney-style.)

Would love to have been a fly on the wall at the meetings. They probably worriedly discussed what the brides and grooms might wear in front of other paying guests (though thay shouldn't talk because let's just admit right now that Minnie Mouse dresses more like a drag queen than like a woman).

ETA: I'll bet you're right about allearsnet, Maggie. Deb seems like a friend.

Speaking of Drag Queens....

Anyone else remember the old old days of the Electric Light Parade, and Cinderella's ugly step sisters?

YEP!

Does this mean I can get Mickey & Goofy instead of Mickey & Minnie to be at my wedding.. (ha ha)

Seriously.. I clicked on this because I didn't believe it.

Maybe after all the bad publicity they feared a rash of cancellations during gay days.. I'm kidding.. I kid. But the timing certainly is fortuitous with GayDays just around the corner.

This is fantastic! Now prepare for the inevitable backlash.
