Family road trip to Vegas from DL

In the early planning stages of a trip to DL and then driving to Vegas to visit a relative. It will be me and my wife and two sons ages 5 and 7. We're on the east cost and have not been west. Any recommendations for the drive to Vegas? Anything worth stopping at along the way? Should I detour onto Route 66? I don't mind taking some time for the drive there.

Once we arrive in Vegas, do you have any recommendations on what we can do as a family? How many days should I plan on for staying there. Any hotels better than others for kids?

Thanks!

There really isn't anything major to see on the road to Vegas, other than Calico GHost TOwn. Route 66 is kind of dead. There are numerous hotels to choose from in Vegas that work for families. YOu should google Vegas hotels and to find things to do....walking around all of the hotels and casinos, ziplines, Red Rock Canyon, museums, Hoover Dam, and so on!

There is a children's museum in Vegas. At least until march they will be honoring reciprocal membership agreements with other children's museums.

Barstow outlet shopping is about halfway between DL and Vegas. We picked up some great bargains while stopping for lunch. It depends on your budget for hotels. We stayed at Circus Circus because they have circus acts and midway games plus an indoor theme park for our daughter to enjoy. The prices are low and most rooms have been renovated recently. There is also a Krispy Kremes and McDonald's in the hotel. The only thing is that it is down one end of the strip rather than being in the middle, but you can always drive to one of the resorts in the middle and park.

Have a great trip! :goodvibes

Should I detour onto Route 66?
Once you hit Devore on I-15 you are on Route 66. Route 66 goes slightly
west at Victorville - on D Street (National Trails Highway) towards Oro
Grande. If you want to follow the actual Route 66 you can take that into
Barstow. There is very little of note on that stretch of 66 - a couple of
markers, a 1930's bridge, in Lenwood an old drive-in. From Barstow 66
veers to Needles which is really out of your way heading to Vegas. There
are, however, more "classic" 66 things to see along that stretch. Just
before Needles you could turn north on HWY 95 which will take you back
to Vegas.
