Yeah, I broil and once it gets going you better run like hell because it will probably be bursting into flames soon. It's odd, whenever I cook my daughter cries begging for the fire not to start again..wonder why. I'm actually not a bad cook...really.
My grandpa always used to leave the oven door a bit cracked when he broiled but we have small children and I don't think our oven door will even do that. I'll just wait until grilling season I guess.
I've only broiled a steak once, but it came out ok. I put foil on the broiler pan and made kind of a bowl out of it. Then I put the steak on the foil. That way when the juices start flowing they don't hit the bottom of the pan and smoke, they just sit in the foil bowl with the steak. Clean-up is a breeze that way too.
DH has broiled steak several times. He just puts the steak right on the broiler pan (?). He also leaves the oven door open a bit...not sure if that makes it less smokey.
He usually forgets to take out the broiler pan, so the next time I use the oven the kitchen fills w/ smoke! That's usually how I remember to take out the broiler pan after use.
