"John Carter" tracking could indicate a massive flop

I finally got to see it yesterday. I say it deserves a chance:

It really isn't that bad. Good in fact. Not superb, as there are a few things that I think will lose or confuse the average viewer.

As for Pixar, I don't see them involved at all, actually. I think all the visual effects were done by a variety of third-party companies. ILM was not one of them.

Loved the books, read them along with Wells and Asimov. Before Star Trek and Star Wars, it was our imagination that made John Carter a favorite but now it is more difficult for people to follow in movie form. I personally don't think the bad guy was menacing enough but then I would have cast both Deja's father and the bad guys differently. I did enjoy the movie and was impressed with how well it actually turned out. I hope they have an extended cut for the Blu-ray release next fall with a bit more of the initial days on mars.:thumbsup2

That - combined with a truly BAD pixar movie (first of its kind)...mean a whole heap of trouble on the horizon.

What BAD Pixar movie is that? Cars 2? The one that made a ton of money for the company worldwide and is still raking in merchandising from boys everywhere? Or are you already calling Brave a flop, too?

According to The Wrap:

"'John Carter' is now an official flop.

The Walt Disney Co. on Monday acknowledged in a statement that the movie's poor performance at the box office likely will force Disney to take a $200 million writedown. The company expects its studio divison will post an operating loss of as much as $120 million in the second fiscal quarter of this year.

"John Carter," based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs character, was made for about a quarter-billion dollars;marketing costs were another $100 million on top of that. But the movie grossed only $30.2 million domestically during its first weekend of release, taking in a measly $13.5 million its second."

Yup, I'm hearing pretty much the same from inside and outside sources...this is working out worse than even the analysts were saying after last week. But it's not doing much on Disney stock, as investors realize that the Studios are only a fraction of the company's profit.

Looks like Parks and Resorts will have to be the tentpole for another quarter...

Of course, the forever hopeful are now saying "don't worry, The Avengers and Brave will make up for the Carter fiasco".

We'll see.....:rolleyes1

And the forever cynical will continue to second-guess every move that Disney makes (or doesn't make.)

Different sides of the same coin...

Because it wasn't #1 right out of the gate people are complaining.

It's upto $180M on a $200M budget. Marketing seemed weak so I doubt it would add greatly to the cost and some estimates are 50M. Give it another two weeks and see if it is profiting.
