Here is one example:
In the food porn thread, people often ask if anyone has a photo of this food or that food. It is common for other users to dig up images that don't belong to them and post in reference to the request.
Are we saying this is a no-no?
In this case personally I wouldn't copy the photo, I would just put a link in the thread and say something like "click here for a photo posted by flamegirl in another thread". In that instance you're linking to the photo in the other thread and giving credit to the person who took the photo.
I think what gets me about this type of thing is that it's so simple to ask permission, it's a common courtesy. I think most of us agree that as a community we want to share with others, we just don't want to be stepped on in the process.
ITA!!!! 100% this is just it, common courtesy goes a long way and so does accepting the answer you get to your question whether it's a yes or a no. I have a few photos that I use as backgrounds but I asked before I took them to use and I made sure to thank the person who said I could use them. Common courtesty, unfortunately it's becoming extinct.
