How much the home resort matters all depend on how flexible you are with travel dates and resort choice.
I own SSR points and I like to visit all different resorts over time, but I'm happy to stay at my resort as well (love the walking path to Disney Springs and point charts for standard view are pretty reasonable now). I don't travel during Autumn and for race week end I'm perfectly happy to stay at my home resort. However I've not succeeded to book VGF yet. Am I disappointed? No, it's something I'd like to do, but not a dealbreaker.
If you really want to stay at a resort every time and would be disappointed if you cannot, buy there. Otherwise buy the cheapest resort you don't mind staying at.
