Travel time from San Diego to LAX?

Hi,
Can you please tell me how much time you'd allow to go from San Diego (the Catamaran Resort) to LAX on a Sat. in July? Our flight leaves at 2:15 PM and we need to drop the rental car, plus we're traveling with two young kids and a mother-in-law.

So what time would you leave San Diego?

It is normally a 2 hour drive if there isn't any traffic. I would give yourself 3 hours just to be safe.
