Got an email today from Topicana, specials, etc.

$39 garden rooms, +$10 for Island Tower, +30 for Paradise Tower

end of June $59 night weekdays, lowest i've seen in south strip area

Evidently, not approved by AAA-not on website, etc.; and Trip Advisor reviews are not stellar either?

Is it a dump or just worn around the edges? The pool(s) look fantastic, think 1 is indoors?

thanks for the links:thumbsup2 will def check them out...sketchy is all i need to hear to stay clear.

actually, i've been disappointed over the last year for TA reviews in Sandusky, OH, (cedar point area - way off!) and in Ocean City, MD:confused3

although i always do check it out 1st, just some of the bad reviews are hysterical "there was a crumb under our bed & found a spiderweb on the window:upsidedow ", etc.

The company that owns the Tropicana (Columbia Sussex) had endured a lot of bad press lately from employee complaints about payroll checks bouncing and health insurance premiums not being paid. The state of New Jersey has pulled the gaming license of the Trop in Atlantic City and some industry watchers are saying something similar may happen here soon. One of the big unions (Culinary) is renegotiating a new contract with them and from reading about it, negotiations are going nowhere as the Trop management wants a lot of give-backs. All in all, I interpret this as a property with a lot of extremely unhappy employees. If you are looking for rates that cheap, try Circus Circus or the Sahara. I would re-think staying at the Trop.

okay, appreciate the info!

i was doing some fact-finding for my DS & his buds, on the fence for their vacation this summer (22ish; trying to find somewhere cheap; but in the thick of things)

may just suggest the excalibur standard rooms or hooters:rolleyes1 ;) ; they're young - they can walk to the strip!

I disagree- I would not stay at Circus Circus or Sahara, I think they are worse. If you are looking for a reasonable decent hotel, check out Harrahs or Flamingo (recently renovated rooms, haven't stayed there since, but heard they are beautiful). Both are center strip - trust me, once you see Circus Circus you won't be sorry. I would rather take a chance with Trop.

fyi Harrahs has great prices on strip view rooms for weekdays in June (unfortunately, they have a 1 night stay cancellation policy:headache: i'm too chicken to book jik something happens & we have to cancel)

as in $79 strip view/luxury, $59 standard room/deluxe - on their website under specials:thumbsup2

I second the Flamingo. Stayed there with 4 kids in 2006 and although the rooms were dated, it was clean and we felt very safe. You can´t beat the location, it´s smack in the middle of the Strip, and the grounds and pool area are beautiful.

We stayed there is 2006 also, rooms were very dated, but I hear they did a major renovation of the rooms - but either way, they are clean, in a great location, and a good value.

My DD and i have stayed at the Trop 3 times.......their rooms are very dated and tacky, that is almost part of the charm ;), their pool is fab as is the location, and the free shows in the casino.

We lasted 10 minutes in the 2nd room they "upgraded" us to. Our first room had forgotten to be cleaned when we walked in. Ewwww. We were excited about being upgraded but the room was not only dated but there was a smell that, well was just gross.

We canceled our week reservations with them, walked across the street (kiddie corner) and ended up in a beautiful room on the 29th floor of the Monte Carlo for $20 more a night. So worth it!!!!

I stayed at Tropanica this past weekend. For $39 it's fine, if you're not picky. The rooms are tacky and dated, but clean. The sinks are slow to drain (but they drain). The location is at the end of the strip across from Excalibur, MGM and NYNY. It is a long walk from the strip to the rooms. The casino itself is smoky as well. But, for $39, it's fine.

thanks - as i told my DS, where else can 4 guys stay on the strip for $10 each a night:thumbsup2

For 22 y/o guys it will be perfect.

I will say that they do not guarantee double beds. Their king rooms have a huge bed and a pull out couch (did not look comfortable).

We love Hooters Hotel! And we're, well, late 30s. Lots of fun, very clean, good sports showing. Can walk to the Strip as well, and cheap. Good pool, and lots of action out by the pool. Bands, contests, lots to drink...:rolleyes1

Stay away from the Trop! I won't even go in there anymore. Ewwww.
