Hello, and welcome to my mostly photos trip report for my family’s visit to Disney World in mostly April of 2014. It’s kind of late, but better late than never, that’s my motto.

It was a birthday trip for both Danny and Hannah, who I will introduce in just a second. We spent 6 nights in the Jambo House at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in a DVC suite. We had a great time.

So who are Danny and Hannah? My usual partners in Disney crime, that’s who.

Hannah is my kid. I often call her H because that’s much less typing. I call her my kid but she is actually an adult. This picture of her is really old, but she approves of it and is usually pretty crabby about having her picture taken or me sharing a picture of her online. She is a huge Disney fan and this will by her 8th trip. Lucky girl. Her favorite park is the Magic Kingdom. Her favorite ride is Haunted Mansion. Her favorite Princess is Kida. She excels at sarcasm and spends large amounts of her free time playing video games. I love her.

Some popular Disney blog used this picture in a Tusker House review. They don't want to give me credit so I'm posting it again here. Hello Danny!

Danny is Hannah’s dad. He probably likes going to Disney World the most out of all of us. He’s really uninterested in going anywhere else on his vacations. This is partly because he has serious mobility issues and Disney World gives on a rented scooter gives him his mobility back. He’s a genius software engineer, a huge nerd and a really good person. We’re not together any more, but we’ve taken family vacations together for many, many years.

I’m Shelly. My first trip to Disney anything wasn’t until I was 30 years old. I’ve tried to make up for that since! I have always been a kind of crazed theme park fan, and Disney World? I wanted to live there! And so last January, I moved to Orlando and participated in Disney’s College Program - even though I was the same age as most of the other participants moms. It was a super amazing time. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done and I can not possibly say enough good things about it. My favorite park is the Magic Kingdom. My favorite ride is impossible to say. My favorite Disney movie is the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but there’s a big soft spot for the Aristocats which was my favorite as a kid. Also, Buzz Lightyear is my boyfriend.

Ok so that’s us.
Here’s the basic story of our spring of 2014 Disney trip.

Our last trip before this one had been in December of 2013 (there’s a trip report about that over here if you’d like to read it), and we had bought annual passes on that visit. We used them that (long) visit, and planned to use them on another trip in October of 2014.

When we decided to buy them, I mentioned maybe could squeeze in a quick low budget trip in the spring on the same passes as well. Like so many travel plans, at first I was just kind of joke/kidding, but as time went on it started to seem like more and more of a good idea.

One day, my brother mentioned he was going to sell some of his DVC points. Hmm, really? I started thinking more about that extra spring trip, and one night while we were all having dinner together, I brought it up again. Danny and Hannah have their birthdays in the same week, and maybe it would be fun to go to Disney and celebrate together?

Of course it would be!

Points were secured, rooms, were booked, all that stuff.

Detalls:

When: April 27 - May 2, 2014

Where: Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House

Tickets: Annual passes bought in December of 2013

Dining: Trying to cheap it out

Memory Maker: Of course, you can’t be too cheap :) - but! I can’t find the photos. I’ll keep looking.

Special Events: Flower and Garden!

And the most special - The birthdays!

Danny only wore his birthday button one day, but Hannah wore her’s all of them. And she got some great pixie dust because of it. It was super fun and I loved watching her be surprised every time it happened. Things like a free soda or an extra dessert, a phone call from Mickey at our resort’s gift shop, and even just the constant birthday wishes from so many cast members was so fun and made all of us feel special.

This trip was also nice because it really felt like a extra special treat. Visiting Disney in December of one year and October of the next seemed like a huge luxury in itself, but getting this trip in too? That made 3 trips in a 12 month period and we were feel super grateful and lucky.

It wasn’t the best trip though, and I think it turned out to be everyone’s least favorite (keeping in mind that every trip we’ve had has been fantastic overall and a terrible day at Disney is better than a regular day at home).

A major reason this was no one’s favorite trip was the rain. It didn’t just rain every day, it monsooned. A lot. There were several days we spent more than an hour sitting in a park trying to wait out the downpour. After a couple days we just trudged through the rain, but even then a lot of attractions were closed. And it meant no picture taking, which for me is a lot of the fun of being at Disney. The other weather issue was it was so very hot. Not compared to how hot it gets in Orlando, but we had only visited in December before this trip and we weren’t really prepared.

We were also not in love with Jambo House. At all. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just wasn’t for us. The balcony with the animals to watch was marvelous, but we’re not the type to spend any time at all in our room, so we didn’t see a lot of animals. We’d give it a try in the morning while we got ready and a couple times we got lucky and saw some giraffe, but always by the time we came home it was dark and there was nothing to see.

We all thought it was way too dark inside, too. It makes sense to go along with the theming for sure. I get it. But we didn’t dig it.

It’s definitely gorgeous in there, though. We had great service and loved having a microwave and toaster in our room. The towels are better in a deluxe. What else.

So it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as fun staying there as we had been hoping.

There are plenty of great memories from this trip. And a lot of good photos. I hope you’ll enjoy them.

I picked a 6:30 flight out of Kansas City. Ridiculous! I remember thinking since it was a shorter trip we should trip to be there as many hours as possible, but that’s not a flight I’ll be taking again if I got to choose.

20140427-20140427_073106.jpg

My sweet daughter snapped a picture of me catching some sleep and looking old on our flight. On my phone even so I’d be sure to see it.

The flight was fine, as usual with SouthWest.

Before we knew it we were in Orlando and loading on to the Magical Express.

20140427-20140427_110702.jpg

Our driver was Marlon Lopez and he was fantatic. He kept us entertained on that drive which can sometimes feel like a lot of anxious “hurry up!!”.

20140427-20140427_104622.jpg

This girl on the Magical Express movie is sure no Stacey Aswad.

Before we knew it we were on property!

20140427-20140427_110552.jpg

First stop, Art of Animation. We really love that resort, but we were looking forward to our DVC suite as a nice change.

No one caught a picture of the resort as we were checking in, but I did make sure to take a bunch of room pictures before any of us settled in.

The room was really gorgeous, and there was a lot of space when the couch wasn't pulled out as Hannah's bed.

20140427-_DSC0016.jpg

As a family that likes to unpack and settle in, we definitely appreciated the storage space.

20140427-_DSC0018.jpg

20140427-_DSC0019.jpg

And this! We like to eat in the room and this made it so much easier. A much bigger fridge, a microwave and a toaster. We never really used the sink or the dishes, but those 3 things were fantastic.

20140427-_DSC0020.jpg

Plus look at this adorable touch.

20140427-_DSC0010.jpg

We didn’t pay for a room with a view, but this looked pretty nice.

We threw our necessities into this lovely bag from my travel agent friend and headed out to have a good time.

The Festival of Fantasy parade was pretty new in April of 14, and we had never seen it. I got us FastPasses when the viewing area was in the hub. I love having the castle in the background in all these photos.

20140427-_DSC0137.jpg

Look at that gorgeous sky! The castle isn't bad either, especially while listening to the Main St Marching Band.

Doesn't everybody like The Beast better when he's a beast and not a man?

We saw it again later this trip, from virtually the same spot, so if that wasn’t enough photos for you, don’t cry :guilty:. There will be more.:goodvibes

I must have worn out my picture taking energy for the day, because after obsessively shooting the show and the parade, there aren’t many photos of the rest of the day.
We always intend to visit the Hall of Presidents, but we usually manage to miss it. This time we got it done on the first day!

20140427-_DSC0387.jpg
Nobody moved all the way down the row, but the theatre wasn’t at all crowded so that’s ok.

20140427-_DSC0390.jpg

This show always makes me tear up a little. I am a history dork and I'm especially in love with the ideals of our country.

20140427-_DSC0393.jpg

I don’t remember why, but apparently we headed back to the resort for a while after that.

20140427-_DSC0395.jpg

20140427-_DSC0397.jpg

The rest of the night is kind of a blur. We were back at the MK, and used our FPs at Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain.

20140427-_DSC0431.jpg

I took this shot of what was quickly becoming my favorite view of the Magic Kingdom.

20140427-_DSC0482.jpg

Eventually we made our way back to the front of the castle.
20140427-_DSC0487.jpg

And shut down the park. Check out the clock, and check out the crowds still there at closing time!

20140427-_DSC0488.jpg

Excellent first day. We straggled back to the room and fell into bed to rest a tiny bit before our first full park day of this trip.

But wait!! Where is my Dream Along with Mickey post? Wow, I was sure I made it but it's not here. Luckily I write these things in a Goggle Doc before I paste them here -- so let's backtrack just a little bit.

First, we went to the Mara (Jambo House’s quick serve restaurant) for some lunch. By the time we were all checked and settled in, it had been a lot of hours since we’d eaten, and we were ready.

20140427-_DSC0022.jpg
Hannah and I got the BBQ chicken flatbread (the cilantro made it the winner), and Danny had the burger. All very decent deluxe food court kind of food. The important thing was we were no longer hungry (in fact H and I wished we would have shared one flatbread instead of getting two) and could focus on more important things, like getting ourselves to the Magic Kingdom for some Magic!!

20140427-_DSC0026.jpg

Oh what a beautiful sight!

And talk about magic! I have a big fat love for Dream Along with Mickey, the show the put on several times a day at the castle stage. It’s about the power of dreams and I (dork that I am) find it inspiring and encouraging. I love it. It was starting as we got there. I joined the crowd and took a lot of pictures.

Dreams really do come true!

See, I thought there must have been some photos missing from that first evening, and I was right. These photos were hiding, but they couldn’t hide forever! So let me fill you in.

I showed you the bus stop picture as we left the Magic Kingdom headed back to Jambo house. We had some good luck seeing animals that afternoon!

I love these lights in the lobby.

20140427-_DSC0412.jpg

It was nice and dark by the time we made it back to the park. The castle was looking good. We were hungry so we headed past and to Pinocchio’s.

20140427-_DSC0431_1.jpg

We sat outside to enjoy this view.

20140427-_DSC0424.jpg

Danny and Hannah had the meatball sandwich. I had the chicken strips. We all had the fries and some soda.

20140427-_DSC0425.jpg

It was pretty standard Disney QS. We always end up at Pinocchio’s at least once. They have a nice assortment on the menu (not that you could tell from my chicken strip choice) and one of the best views in the park.

We always try to be on Big Thunder Mountain during Wishes at some point. It’s absolutely magical. We did it that night, but I didn’t pull out my camera till just after we got off the ride.

20140427-_DSC0438.jpg

20140427-_DSC0444.jpg

We rode Haunted Mansion and then met up near Sleepy Hallow to enjoy our first Disney snacks!

20140427-_DSC0445.jpg

Hannah went for funnel cake. I got the Nutella Waffle. Danny had popcorn, which I’m sorry I didn’t take a photo of.

20140427-_DSC0446.jpg

There was a fair amount of wandering around after that.

20140427-_DSC0458.jpg

Gazing at the castle…

20140427-_DSC0472.jpg

And enjoying the view from the back of an elephant.

20140427-_DSC0479.jpg

And THEN we finally headed back “home.”

20140427-_DSC0476.jpg

Goodnight for now, castle.
