This afternoon a Ryanair flight from Liverpool to City Of Derry airport landed at the former RAF base of Ballykelly, about five miles short of the runway it was supposed to land on! This was despite the fact that the pilot was in constant contact with the control tower and visibility was excellent. Add to this the fact that the runway at Ballykelly has no lighting of any kind, there are no control facilities whatsoever, the runway is bisected at one end by a railway line, and the base is currently an army barracks with fairly constant military helicopter traffic going in and out! Someone has a lot of egg on their face tonight, especially as it has been confirmed that there were no technical problems with the aircraft, so it wasn't an emergency landing!
