Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Well, we made it! My watch said 1:34:57, so not quite my goal but honestly, I was just happy to finish feeling pretty good. I have a tendency to go out too fast and blow up about 1/2 way through and tonight, I just talked myself out of it! My last 2 miles were the fastest! Hope everyone had a great race...enjoy the party! ME is coming for us at 6:45 so we have to get some sleep!

Oh and if anyone saw the idiot at mile 2 who ran through the median to get to a porta-potty, only to find it was full of water up to her knees....well, I will just pretend that wasn't me!

Wow. Hot and humid. That was tough. I underestimated my finish time. I said 1:45, but came in at 1:49. There were no character stops. Just some walking to get my heart rate down.

Wow, I'm exhausted. That was kind of miserable with that humidity...the air was just so still! Costumes were great but I sure did feel for those with elaborate ones...they had to by dying out there! I thought the entertainment was awfully thin too...kind of a bummer. Hope everyone had a good race! We didn't stay at the after party...just too tired.

Well I finished! Which was my goal. I will say that I came about as close to getting swept as a person can get but they didn't get me. It was a great experience. I hope everyone enjoyed their race!

Well I finished!!! Sweepers were right behind me, but I finished!!
Last 3 miles were rough...
Glad it's over, but SOO glad I did it and never gave up!!

Congrats everyone!!
Hope the party was cool. I ditched out. My feet couldn't take it :/ kinda bummed about that.

1:37:30 for me. Longest run in 4 1/2 months, so not complaining. Lots a hip pain after mile 7 (?????) and my thought to be extinct plantar fasciitis reared it's ugly head, but overall a pretty fun time! I CAN say with the heat and humidity I was one severely skanky Jim by the end! I was hoping that everyone was staying upwind of me........ :-)

Those banked ramps really made my hips scream....maybe that caused yours too? My PF is killing me this morning too...but nothings keeping me from the food & wine fest!!!! And funny you mention skankiness :) I told my BF during the run that I had never been so aware of so many other runner's stinkiness, myself included no doubt. There was definitely a lot of funk out there from the weather conditions!

Seriously!! I felt so sorry for the cab driver that took us back to AoA!

I finished right where I expected in 1:24-ish. The humidity was crazy. In the changing tent afterward, I was able to wring sweat out of my clothes. I was definitely disappointed in the lack of characters and entertainment on the course for both the 5k and 10 miler. I have no desire to run this one again. However I will say I thought the organization was terrific. Disney finally seems to be applying what they've learned from other events. Yes, the walk to bag check felt like another mile away, but at least it was a simple in and out unlike the horrendous line at the first W&D. I stayed at the party until about 1:30. Rode Toy Story 3 times with no wait. Should have done more, but my arm was tired, lol. When we went back later the wait was 35 min and that's when we decided to leave. There were a bunch of villains out for photo ops, but we only waited for Darth Vadar for the BF. Star Tours also had no wait. I happened to catch part of the awards ceremony. First and second place female were both here for the second place female's wedding. I think first place finished in 1:02. On the bus I overheard someone say first place male finished in 58 min. :thumbsup2 :crazy2:

We were here to celebrate my daughter's 26th birthday. Had a great time cheering on out two best friends at the 5k then went back to the room and had a lazy day. Headed over to the race via Espn early (6:30) which got us a picnic table to sit and watch all the festivities build. We were in corral c so happy about that. The humidity and still air definitely made it tough along with the banked curves but we hung in there and finished. We loved the cheering volunteers and cast members and tried to say thank you to everyone. Our friends had pretzels and cupcakes waiting for us at the end. My daughter and her friend rode the tower of terror and we went back to the hotel I'm at the airport headed home, tired but accomplished. Hope all had fun!

Totally agree. The organization was great...I was so happy bag pick up was smooth...I hated the stairs though :). But BF and I both agreed it was a really Boring run for Disney and we were really disappointed with that. I was banking on a lot more photo ops on the course for some short rest breaks. I was really surprised there weren't more. We both said we wouldn't run this one again either unfortunately. Seemed to be the sentiment of a lot of folks we were on the bus with too.

Sorry to hear that the lack of on course entertainment made the race a disappointment. Hopefully all of the racers handled the heat and humidity without problems. A friend of ours was at the race and she seemed to have a good time. Since we decided to stick to half marathons at Disney we took a pass at this one. Looking forward to the Wine and Dine in November. :thumbsup2

THAT was it??!?! Literally my hips were crick crick cricking by the time we entered Animal Kingdom Gates.

We must be on the same page because I thought the stairs were cruel and unusual torture hahahaha! But it did go very smoothly!!! Congrats everyone!!

DH and I did the best we could given my injuries. We ran the first mile, then walked to WWOS, then ran a mile, then walked the rest. Because I stopped to pee at WWOS we ended up slowing down and by the time we were entering DHS the balloon pacers were in front of us. DH was PISSED and kept saying we were gonna get swept. There were still about 1,000 people behind us. Well we didn't get swept, and we made it to the finish! I have no idea how long it took me yet, but I didn't get swept and I ran across the finish line. I am very proud of myself because I didn't think I would make it past 5K this time. Today I feel great, foam rolled last night and this morning.

Anyone headed over to EPCOT today keep your eyes out for a little blond girl with a medal and a Snow White tattoo on her arm!!

:thumbsup2:cool1::cheer2::dance3:

Really disliked this race; it will be my last. Course was boring.. I was expecting a lot more entertainment on the long drags and I really missed all the cheering sections. The ramps were a little too intense for me and a little dangerous I felt; steep inclines and banks are for cars, LOL!

What about the finish line? What a let down. The wonderful volunteers kept cheering the same thing for a while, I was preparing to really sprint when I saw the line, turning a corner like many before and BAM!! Hardly any time to giddy up. And no characters at the finish?

Kiddos to Run Disney for having busses drop runners near the corrals. Huge bonus! I was expecting to walk an hour.

Looking forward to my next Disney half :-))

When I finally turned on the lights in the bathroom this morning I nearly screamed...heat rash down both sides of my face. Never had that problem before that I can remember. I really think I was nearing heat exhaustion last night. I started getting chills and honestly thought I was going to be sick when we were running through the baseball stadium and for a while after that. That's never happened to me before...scary. I hope this rash goes away...it looks awful :(. Spent a little time in the hot tub this morning...now going to head out to the food & wine until we bonk. We have a 5pm demo booked too...hope I make it :)

My thoughts:

I was surprised at how efficient the buses were at Wide World of Sports, I thought it was going to be a madhouse but they were so organized.

That was a super long wait in good ol' corral D, we did a lot of sitting around.

I was kind of surprised we had so much lining up and waiting to do before we got to the start line (this was our first race ever, so maybe this always happens).

We did pretty well for our level of training (we never went more than 5 miles in a single training run). Ran for about the first 3 miles straight. What really messed me up was the Wide World of Sports. We had a pretty good pace set, then we hit that dirt trail. There was only space for about 4 people wide, and everyone just started walking. It was super hard to get around anyone, much less a whole trail of walking people. We ended up just walking most of it with everyone else, then when we hit the track it was hard to get back up to speed.

We did much better once we hit the road again, but my feet were starting to hurt really bad at this point. It got easier once we hit that Mile 9, but I really wish they had had little half mile or 1/4 mile markers so I could better pace myself.

I think we finished in about 2 hours and 20 minutes, which I don't think is bad at all for our first official race. I still think we woulda had a better time if it hadn't been for that dirt path, but oh well.

Does anyone remember all the photo ops? I think there was one per mile....the only ones I remember are:

-the AK parade float
-the pirate ship
-Dr. Facillier
-Big Bad Wolf
-the hyenas and Scar (so mad about this one, didn't notice Scar as we ran by and were only told later by another runner in Gaston's line at the party, totally woulda stopped for pictures if we'd seen Scar)

I don't remember any more...my mind does have a few blank spots from the race.

The After party was super fun, we were exhausted but still got pictures with Darth Vader, Jafar and Gaston.

We had walk on rides on ST, RR, TOT and we had about a 20 minute wait for TSMM.

Oh, one more thing. It was really weird, when we hit mile 2 it looked like they were already clearing out the water/powerade station. There were only about 2 tables still open and it was super crowded. I thought that was weird because we were keeping a pretty good pace then (9 minutes per mile), so even though we were in the last corral, there were still a lot coming.
