Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

My goal is to start back on saturday. I had hoped to start my training schedule but with two sick kids It hasn't happened this week. But I made a goal to workout 6 days a week because I want to incorporate more strength training to see how that impacts my pace and also my weight.

Pretty good running week here, Mon 5 tempo, Tue 6, Wed off it was snowing, Thu 3 fartleks & today Friday 7. It's just been so cold & plantar fasciatis sucks, although I feel like I'm managing it somewhat. Feel like I'm getting into the groove again after backing off some with the cold weather/foot pain. ....But, what's more exciting is I have all 3 outfit themes figured out, including sewing a tank for one, still need to make the skirt for it & add embellishments, but I'm so excited to wear it.

This is next on the agenda for me... (We will def be doing light side characters since DH is not a fan of the dark side) I think we've decided for one race DH will be Chewie and I will be Han. For the other, I really want to do Leia but not sure what DH would be other than Han. I've also considered yoda!

I seriously thought about reusing my Light Side outfits because I love them so much, but right now I'm thinking Darth Minnie, Boba Fett and then something simple for the half. So time to get to work on the costumes!

Than you can do Leia buns!!!! He could be Luke or Wicket the Ewok as him & Leia are buddies and you could have a cracker to share with him :)

Darth Minnie would be so cute! I'm going all Dark Side, I dug out all the Star Wars books we have and have been going through them and I kept thinking Palpatine/Darth Sidious would be cool, but then was like I really don't want pictures with his creepy face on my shirt! I'll post pics once they are complete closer to the race weekend.

How is everyone else's training going?

Was doing pretty well up until this week-nightmare week at work so haven't ran for five days but now the weekends here I can get back on track and just focus on moving forward. I'll get a 5k in today and then somewhere in the region of 8-10 miles tomorrow!

More importantly we've started thinking of costumes this week! We're wanting to dress up for both the 5k and 10k and then just have a themed outfit for the half.

Hopefully I'll understand this more as DH and I are currently working our way through all of the movies (he is a huge fan but I've only seen a little here and there). I think we may have settled on Chewie (DH) and Yoda (me) then Han (DH) and Leia (me).

How is everyone else's training going?

Training is going well. In 5 weeks of consistent running, my 30 minute runs have gotten substantially better and I'm really happy with my progress. Day 1 of training I did 2.1 miles in 30 minutes. This week I did 2.7 and 2.6, so a half mile improvement. My pace is also consistently under 12 minute miles now, even on my 5 miler last weekend.

I knew I would get my speed back eventually after taking almost two years off of running but never thought I'd get it back so quickly. If my pace (and training) stays consistent, I am going to PR at a half I'm thinking about doing at the end of March by more than 5 minutes. The training staying consistent is the biggest wild card. This is definitely the best 8 have ever been able training, and it's showing.

Props to you all that wear costumes. Be fun to see what you guys come with! I can't do it, would me drive crazy. Plus I'd be super self-conscience about it. But I did order the tank below to wear for the 10k. Cotton so might just wear it over a sleeveless tech. And hoping to get some fun socks(hoping I might find something at the expo).

There were a few different choices for Star Wars themed compression socks at the Expo. Trick was they came in packages of 3 for $60 and could not be purchased individually.

I can't do costumes either. Between wanting to be comfortable with the Florida humidity (which I'm expecting to be pretty high for Dark Side since it will be April) and also being too lazy to put something together, I haven't done one before. For Wine and Dine, I just wore tech shirts and capris. For Dark Side, I'll most likely go with shorts instead of capris, but I do want to try to do at least something with the theme. So I'm looking online for some Star Wars-related tops. Perhaps the "May the Course Be With You" one from Raw Threads, and I also saw one on Teepublic that says "I am one with the Force."

For the half I am likely wearing the "half marathoner I am" Raw Thread shirt with a sparkle skirt. For the 10K boba felt costume ill wear a sparkle skirt and a tank that I put some heat transfer vinyl on and a headband. I try to keep the costumes simple!

I guess that's not a bad price for compression socks but I'd like to buy just one pair. :)

I like simple ideas! That's my usual go to - sparkle skirts + tank top + sweaty band! Works out pretty well! The only time I didn't do a tank top was the time I started out intending to walk the 10K.

My husband is getting a Star Wars/Disney Tattoo & I think all the Dark Side fans will enjoy it :)

He still has another session to finish the shading + legs/feet/background.

PSA from a Floridian here: as folks are starting to work on costume ideas, do keep in mind that late April here in central FL is the equivalent of high summer in most of the rest of the country. Chances of it being HOT and HUMID are high! Always possible we could get a little cool front, but that late into April, it's not real likely. I'd err on the side of dressing for the heat - avg for that time of year is a high in the mid-80s, overnight low in the 60s.

Wow, very cool!

Yep, my outfits are simple too, just stuff added to running clothes usually tank and skort, so not really costumes but themed outfits. I will have arm sleeves for one outfit, the 10k one I think.

Did a speed work out of 6 x 800s yesterday, wasn't too bad considering it's cold & have a hard time breathing the cold air & my heal still hurts, so I will welcome Florida heat. I don't have much trouble in heat/humidity as long as I drink obviously, everything warms up so much better versus cold.

I'm with you guys. I'm usually a tank top and sparkle athletic skirt (more themed like you say) or bounding. Got in a 7-mile run this weekend at average 9:05 pace. The weather was gosh darn perfect. I'm working on speed in my longer runs to hopefully PR a half I'm doing in late March.

Great to hear, keep up the good work.
