Well shoot. I just got Annual Passes for my family in January and was told I couldn't renew our passes until 40 days had passed from the date of first use. If I purchase discounted tickets to use after our passes expire, would I be able to hold on to them until January 2021
( if they have that long of an expiration date) and then use them towards our Annual Passes for 2021?
What? I think you might have misunderstood. You can renew an AP up to 40 days before expiration. Not 40 days from first use. If you bought your AP and activated it January 2020, then you won't be able to renew until beginning in December 2020 (starting whatever date is 40 days before your AP expires January 2021).
As for expiration of discounted tickets, you would have to look at the fine print on the ticket you want to buy. I see several say their tickets expire January 13 of the next year, but be mindful if it says a first use by date (in the past, my tickets usually said must be first used by December 31, but that they were then good until January 13).
Tickets bought now at the discounted rate are also likely old stock and will only have value for the old price at best (at worst they'll have value for what you paid; it's best to hope for bridging, but never assume).
It's a little late now (unless you can find a Disney store that still has stock of AP vouchers at the old price), but one thing that could have been done was to have bought an AP voucher if you knew you would return to activate it before it expired. I did this back when they dropped Premium and added Sig/Sig+ in 2015. Bought 4 Premium vouchers for my mom and myself. Had Sig+ for the price of Premium for the both of us for two years.
