News Round Up 2020

The sooner you accept it, the easier it becomes. 😀

Besides, then the little things like a park being open an hour later seem very exciting!
So true. I was very excited to see the park hours increase for the upcoming weekends. It gives me hope that they will increase them for Thanksgiving week. However, I am fully prepared for pandemonium too.

Iron Gwazi is the first one I’m actually excited for. Steel Vengeance is a great ride, but I definitely liked Mean Streak more. Twisted and Wicked Cyclone both pack a great punch, and at least both of those parks still have a great Wooden.
A bad restraint can really hurt a ride. Sometimes being free is what makes a ride so great like with Phoenix at Knoebels where you float half the ride or Leap the Dips with no restraints at all.

Unfortunately the only RMC I've gotten to ride is the new Texas Giant, it was a great ride. However, it was no Real Texas Giant. Like you said though, the problem with RMC is they have to take out a really great, often iconic, woodie to make it.

I am just slightly old enough to remember when nearly all woodies had buzz bars. My first coaster was Judge Roy Scream, sitting between my mom and grandpa with a buzz bar. Since then it has gained seat dividers, headrests, seat belts, and individual lap bars, that the ops insist on crushing into you, at least it still has skid brakes.

I also used to love the reworked Son of Beast (really my favorite coaster of all time), could ride in any position and feel fine, because I left the lap bar completely loose and hand my hands up. I'd go with friends that would crush themselves with the bar, and hold on white knuckled, who said they felt like they just went through a boxing match.

Shame .. I think that a lot of people would show up with this .. despite the virus ... especially since it 4-5 months away still.

But, I think though this pretty much says what we all already know (and have just been in denial about) ... (okay maybe that denial part is just me .. ) ....... WDW won't even be back to even close to "normal" until AT LEAST March 2021 (and more than likely summer 2021) .. Between this and the water parks (and only one) not re-opening until then this is a pretty big sign. Heck . they may just plan on running the parks as minimal as possible until the date the reservation system "expires".

I know a lot depends on the virus, but obviously Disney is just planning for the worst (because the minimal approach saves them a lot of money and headaches (from cancellations, etc.).

Makes me rethink my planned week-long late January trip at this point. It still may not be "normal" enough to make it worth it. :(
Might save yourself a lot of heartache if you just accept that "normal" isn't coming back until at least May next year. If it comes sooner than that, great, you can be excited that it ended sooner than you thought. I really want to book a cruise for March 21st, but I doubt cruising will be back to normal by then so I'm kicking the can. If it does happen to come back sooner, I can try for a last minute deal.

They may be iconic wooden coasters that RMC replaced but at least with Mean Streak it was very rough at the end and was a walk on all the time. What I love about what RMC has done is made rough wooden coasters into smooth intense rides. Who doesn't like ejector air time. Steel Vengeance you are out of your seat the entire ride.

Yeah, I agree about Mean Streak. Even I, who would ride Son of Beast multiple times in the back, thought Mean Streak was uncomfortably rough and I don't remember it having a big payoff either. OTH, I'd let someone straight up punch me in the ribs if I could ride SOB or the Real Giant again. Mean Streak was the only Dinn coaster I ever rode that I didn't really enjoy, but they were definitely known for their roughness.

I could talk coasters all day, but I'll make this (very) slightly more Disney related. I was supposed to be at MK on Sunday, but cancelled our Trip. Went to Six Flags Over Texas for the day, instead, where my 4 year old daughter rode Shockwave :). I did think this was proof she was my daughter, until she later complained that Judge Roy Scream was "too rough" 😲. When I questioned my wife on how a kid of mine could find a woodie too rough she said "well I think it is too rough too," so I've decided DD got the bad genes from DW ;). Although, my first real coaster was at age 5; DD has already bagged 15.

I don't foresee Disney back to normal until there is widespread proven vaccine, which is likely to be at LEAST next summer if not longer. Even then I think there will be a travel hangover that a lot of people won't want to go there until 2022.

As someone with DVC and an AP - I am willing to go with the current downgraded experience. However, I can't see someone wanting to spend full Disney price (even with room discounts) for what you are getting right now and for the foreseeable future.

If I didn't already have old unused tickets I would probably wait. I have my fingers crossed for at least ONE fireworks show in June. We are going no matter what!

Ya. We go next April/May.

To be honest, all I want is longer hours and a few more restaurants/lounges open in the hotels (at least the bars should be open later than 9 pm!!!). I couldn't care less about nighttime shows. :)

What are people doing at WDW at night with the parks closing so early? Is that when everyone's eating at the hotels?

There's a post on another thread - poster staying at Boardwalk I think? They went to Abracadabar (sp?) after parks close and people were waiting to get in as it was the only place to get a drink on the Boardwalk. And people grumbling about not much to do at night (take this all with a grain of salt).

I know I keep saying it, but they NEED to open up more lounges at the hotels and keep them open until at least 10 if they are going to continue to close so early.

Hong Kong does not renew Disney's right to buy neighboring plot. So HK Disneyland is essentially locked into what is there. This isn't surprising, HK has incredible restrictions on property ownership and HK Disneyland has not exactly been a roaring success. It does, however, mean significant park expansion in the China market will have to happen at Shanghai. I'm sure the Chinese government is happy about that as well as it gives them even more control, and it wouldn't surprise me if they were a player in this decision.

Yep, was just about to post that.

To be fair, I don't actually think Disney had solid plans to develop this plot or really any intention of doing so in the next decade. But I'm sure losing the option hurts, especially as they lose leverage negotiating about any future plans for Shanghai.

The 1/2 day park concept for HK (and Paris at the time of development) was a bad choice, remains a problem, and is a significant part of the park's lukewarm performance. There are limits now in Disney's ability to fix it. Personally I think HK may end up being the first Disney Park to be cut loose at some point in the future if Disney would be willing to take the reputation hit. If not, I'm not sure how they go about solving HK's problems...

Hours and something to do at night will ultimately decide if we keep our current trip or not. I'm not one to sit around on vacation. I want to stay busy until 11pm!
