The Running Thread - 2021

Have you guys tried a Merino wool top instead of a synthetic? I run in wool all winter and they work great when wet from snow but I've never tried when soaked from summer rain. If I'm running in the summer and it isn't heavy rain that requires a jacket I just go shirtless so I'm not worried about the fabric so much.

I've tried the 3 most available merino wool running tops (Asics; rabbit; and Black Diamond). BD is BY FAR the best one, though it can be a bit boxy. rabbit is a bit more form fitting, but the poly coating holds smells/moisture more than the BD. The only one I can say 100% to avoid is the Asics, it's definitely not worth it, they used a very thick wool hair compared to rabbit and BD, it's much scratchier than the other two.

I've tried about every other running top on the market for the humidity, this is just the first time I've been routinely running in the rain, I used to just skip runs but I'm trying to be more consistent.

Hot rain shirts... I just wear the same thin, light singlets I wear all summer - 100% polyester. Most are Asics, there's a NB in there, and a few UA HeatGear's. Every inch of me is soaked in a hard rain, but I've not ever found the material of any of my shirts to be uncomfortable. They just kind of get wet and sit there, lol! Soaking wet running skirts are another matter. (Some get really heavy when soaked, and then the weight pulls down, gets caught between my legs, and annoys the heck out of me.)

So I had a weird race dream last night.....although is there any other kind of race dream? Apparently, lack of racing is not enough to ward them off. Maybe it was because I was trying to decide if I wanted to run a half at the end of June.

I was signed up--or had just signed up that morning --for a half/full marathon. I was at the check-in location and it was clear that the race start was imminent or had already happened. To get to the start--which seemed to be a mile or so away (so, like Disney ;) ), I had to walk/run through a field on a grass path. I was not alone, as others joined me. Cut scene and I am on a city bus, heading to the start. I'll leave out the even weirder stuff....I get off the bus and see the start line--the racers had mostly gone, but there were still other stragglers starting. I had my purse, and changed into my running clothes, wondering about what I would do with them, when I realized I had no running shoes. Then someone said "You can rent some at that running store. It will only take 2 minutes. I went into the store and asked for a size 9 shoe, fast, and the guy tried to put me in a stability control shoe (I run neutral). I woke up during the part where I was arguing about what shoe I could use and impatient to get to the start.

It was exhausting! Anyone else had a race dream recently? They're always fun to listen to.

I had a recent "race" dream but it was sort of a scavenger/obstacle race. I was running with my oldest DD and had left my youngest (4) at home alone because I had to race and no one was available to watch her! 😂

At one point, we had to pick up backpacks and go off and do something and this couple I know cuts in front of my DD and I for backpacks and I yelled "Oh no! You're not doing that again!" And rushed past them. 🤣

This all stems from them passing me in the school pickup line a few days prior to the dream. I was, and still am, mad about that! 🤣🤣

Maybe your dreams are telling you that you need to go on the Amazing Race!

Has anyone heard from @rteetz ? With the recent request for mod help regarding the Future rD thread I realized he hasn’t been around for a few months.

I haven't heard from him personally, but I follow him on YouTube and he has been posting regularly. I don't believe he is a mod anymore. Ryan runs disney is his username.

Ryan and the DIS boards unfortunately parted company sometime in January. I don't know the reasons or the specifics, (and they are none of my business anyway).

I sure miss his posts here.

As @Kerry1957 said, Ryan was removed as a mod back in January and then banned from the site a little while later. He's still running and has started his training for the NYC marathon this fall.

He was a very good contributor, and I know he even made an appearance or two on the DisUnplugged Tuesday show. Sorry to hear there were issued between him and the DIS.

Wow. Just read that 21 runners died in an Ultramarathon in Northern China. High altitude section got hit with hail, freezing rain, high winds. Not something you expect to happen like that.

I saw that. I'm hoping one of the trail podcasts I listen to covers it. From what I'm reading the weather changed suddenly and the runners weren't prepared. I'm curious if there was mandatory equipment for the race. More and more races that go over high passes require specific cold weather gear in the event of a sudden shift in weather. If this race didn't I hope trail running directors learn from this tragedy and make some changes.

I was listening to a podcast last year about the rising Chinese trail and ultra running community and they have a lot of really good runners. They aren't as known outside of China because they run the majority of their races there instead of Europe or the US where there is more race coverage.
