Parents of the Class of 2019

It is incredible how the time is flying by. It is hard to believe our kids are all doing housing and class selection for their last year of school!

We got to see DD last month for a bit, though I wish it had been under better circumstances. She flew home to chaperone DD13's winter camp and we'd added on a few days to the trip so she could spend some time with my mom, because DD was worried Grandma wouldn't make it until the end of the school year after her cancer diagnosis last fall. Instead, we used one of those days for my mother's funeral mass because she passed at the end of January, just a couple weeks after DD went back to campus for the semester. My mom wanted to be cremated and made me promise when she got the diagnosis that I wouldn't make DD come home from school/miss class for a funeral, so it ended up being a really hectic week and not much of a break for her, though she did enjoy being back at camp with the younger kids.

In happier news, with covid waning again DD did get her approval to study abroad over the summer so she's headed to Ireland in mid-June for the summer semester. And of course, we're taking on a family trip ahead of her program start to spend a few days at Disneyland Paris and sightseeing in Paris and London. So that'll be a fun way to spend her last summer before she has to join the real world. And we're meeting up in Vegas this weekend to head out into the desert for spring break, which should be a nice, peaceful escape from everything.

Today is my daughter’s 21st birthday, had her first legal drink at midnight. Bar seemed pretty packed at midnight on a Monday.

So sorry about your mom. My oldest was a sophomore in college when my mom was diagnosed, fortunately she was only 40 minutes away and managed to come home most weekends during the two months she was at school. My mom told her not to until I explained to my mom she wanted to and would resent me if I didn’t let her (she rarely came home before or after).

Today is DD’s 21st birthday, went out at midnight last night (bar was pretty full), bar crawl tonight (including the one she works at), boyfriend taking her out for dinner tomorrow night, four bff’s from high school coming Friday -Sunday, big party Friday night, brunch Saturday, bottomless mimosas, her sorority and her boyfriends frat have a mixer Saturday afternoon. I sent giftcards to bar/restaurants where you can’t use fakes, a cake for Friday, and a piñata with 21 nips and candy, plus apparently party supplies according to my Amazon account. It’s time to order the graduation gown, she needs to find a Boston sublet starting June 1. She has 3 days between graduation and grad school, her current lease is up before graduation.

My DD is going to Ireland (and Northern Ireland) too! Just a 12 day short term study abroad in May. After she gets back her internship starts.

We've been spending a lot of time hunting for an apartment for summer internships. She and her roommate don't want to commit to more than a 6 month lease because they don't know their next steps (both are finishing college this summer). That really limits the choices, and then to find one that meets budget but also DD's tastes...and inventory has really gone down lately. I don't know whether to tell her to try to snag one or keeping watching!

This is a tough time to be looking for housing. I hope she's able to find something she likes that doesn't break the budget!

There should be college subleases. My daughter and another girl who are graduating and going to BU are looking for a Boston sublease for June/July/August and then a year lease starting September, hopefully no more than $1200 a month each, close to public transportation. It just needs to be functional and in a safe area.

The town they are going to just has a community college which has quite a bit of student housing that leases by semester so there's not a lot of students stuck in 1 year leases. (And the summer semester leases start too late and end too early for their internships.) They came across one sublease that was perfect but it got snapped up ahead of them. So the question to watch and wait, or just get *something*. DD was making some calls yesterday. Their budget is about $1000 total...this is in a Midwest suburb. The one she called is a cheaper complex that is associated with the expensive one next door and you get to use their pools and gyms. Only one bathroom and no laundry in unit, but at least they can do laundry at our older DD's place.

Pretty much all of the properties in the area of all of my kids’ colleges were one year leases, so subleases were pretty easy to find, especially summers. Good luck!

My kid came home after being in FL for spring break went home Monday all her classes went to zoom on Monday. I will see her this Friday to watch the Purdue game. And then WDW in May to celebrate her 21st(which was October). All her roommates graduate this year so she had to get new housing and roommates for next year.

You mean the Saint Peter’s game🤣. Ds23 and his friends have tickets, one of their close friend’s brother is playing (and is now a hometown hero).

Congratulations! I'm so glad he found an internship -- and close to home is a bonus!

How does his school work with co-ops vs. classroom learning? (I'm just curious. I'm familiar with University of Cincinnati's program where the year is divided into equal trimesters and you do 2 trimesters/year in the classroom and 1 as a co-op.) It sounds like your son will have a lot of co-op time scheduled in the next 18 months, but not much classroom time. Is that how it works for everyone, or is this how he chose to do it?

I somehow missed this back when you posted it, sorry about that. His program is similar to UC’s, where the co-ops are built into the schedule. Last fall was his first, he’s in classes this semester, then he has co-ops this summer (he’s working on trying to land that one now) and this fall as well. Then he’ll be back to classes next spring, one last co-op next summer and his fifth year all in classes. UC fits a fifth co-op in their program but they also have summer classes built into their schedule.

A summer internship lease is being signed tonight, yay! They're spending a little more than hoped but getting everything they wanted. It runs through 11/30 and roommate leaves for grad school in the fall and who knows what DD's life plan will be after the internship but we will just have to see what develops. I'm going to try not to worry about it too much, lol!

My daughter and her friend found a sublease, $1300 a month each, close to the T, 20 minute ride to campus. So, honors graduation 5/26, health science convocation 5/27, graduation 5/28, graduation party at her boyfriend’s college house after (50 people), move out of her townhouse 5/29 (and clean it), move to Boston 5/30, program starts 5/31. This should be fun.

Son called the other day and said he's resigning at the same house he's at now for next year - he's still going to be listed as a subletter, so his name is not on the actual lease, but he at least knows he has a spot for Fall/Spring. If his Fall co-op for this year ends up being somewhere other that Rochester, he can sublet his sublet.

He's still working on landing the summer co-op - he had some companies follow up with him, so at least he's making some progress. One company must have found his LinkedIn profile because they reached out to him to apply for their job, which is promising. So far, none of his leads have been near home or Rochester, so we'll probably have to find him housing for the summer.

That will be fun! Glad yours figured out a place too.

DD has to be out of her apartment by 10 am on graduation day so we are bringing down a trailer evening of 5/6 to get started, finish morning of 5/7 plus loading her summer roommate's stuff. Graduation at 1:00. Planning on moving in to new place 5/8 so need to make sure there will be someone there to give them keys on a Sunday.

Good luck to him too!!

Son had two phone interviews this week for his next co-op. One was with a local company and the other was a company in Northern Illinois. He thought going into the interviews that he would be more interested in the local place, but after talking to both, he thinks he'd rather go to the IL company. No offers yet, but one of the places said they might want him to come to their facility to meet in person and tour their company. Both places apparently said he could possibly do a double co-op (he's scheduled to do one this summer as well as this fall semester), so if he gets an offer from one of them, he might be able to work from May to October and then be off a couple months before he goes back next spring.

First offer came in today for my son's co-op. The local company came back with an offer. :) He's following up with the company in IL to see where they stand so he can make a decision sometime next week. It's finals week too, so he doesn't want to make any decision until after those are done. He's relieved to have something in hand (especially one that will cover Co-op #2 and 3, but he really does want to work at the other place if they come back with an offer.

One more quick update - the company in Illinois gave him an offer yesterday. He also had an interview with a third company, but I think he took it mostly just as a practice interview.

He got a couple day extension from the first company to debate on his options, so he has to make a decision by Friday. He's asking the IL company about housing options, as they mentioned in the offer that there was possibly housing available. I think he's leaning towards taking that job, so we'll likely be moving him in sometime later this month and he'll be there through probably Thanksgiving or so.
