Marathon Weekend 2024

sooo....
would there be any interest in a separate "not-so-fast MW" thread? Just thinking that there tends to be a few more solo runners who might want to find someone to team up with, etc for the longer races (and survive all those highway miles!) I am definitely looking for someone to run the marathon with since @The Expert is getter her C2C out of the way in 2024 and won't be running that one.
✋for the 10k!

I think the idea is a good one. However, just one person's thoughts, I would be good keeping that discussion in this thread. Keeping it here rather than a seperate thread might encourage more people to check it out and come out of lurking status as opposed to trying to figure out which thread they should post on (or that they shouldn't post here because they do not consider themselves fast). Plus it would mean one less thread I need to follow to keep up with all the fun :P!

Personally, I'd rather see it all maintained under one thread because everybody brings useful information and experience to the table. I also think the idea of splitting things out to a "not-so-fast" paced group isn't consistent with the inclusivity and welcoming nature that we try to maintain with the community, even it that's not the intention. You also run into that weird space of having to define what "not-so-fast" even means.

As an alternative, what would you think of a thread along the lines of "Runners Seeking Race Buddies" that specifically dealt with pairing up people looking for running companions without limiting it to pacing and keeping the overall discussions for the weekend in this thread?

Fresh off of my marathon registration, I was checking out the Galloway training plans.

When did he drop it to 3 days a week, with only one run longer than 30 minutes? Was this approved by DopeyBadger?

I used his training for the Princess 10k and it worked really well for me. But for longer races I don't know how well it would work, so I'm going to look into another training plan.

I used the Galloway training plan with some adjustments to prep for the marathon earlier this year. It was my first marathon and it prepared me well. I felt really good throughout the race. The last time I did a half I followed a different plan that had me working out several days a week with longer runs and cross training. I was faster (although I was also younger, so that was definitely a factor!), but my legs were always a little tired since I had significantly less rest.

The adjustments I made to the Galloway plan was replacing one of the weekly 30 min runs with a spin workout (I get bored with so much running) and I only went up to 18 miles for my longest run. The 30 mins runs I did straight, the long runs I did 90run/30walk.

What works for everyone will be different, but I thought it prepared me well!

What a interesting morning! I was following along to see how things went to prepare myself for this step for 2025 MW. So, I have a few questions.
1. How many of yall registered yourself and another racer at the same time? Is this a good idea or should you go for one at a time?
2. Are you providing your POT during registration or doing it later? If later are you picking a slower time so you are not prompted to provide the information?
3. Did everyone here who wanted to run the marathon and was on their computer when registration open get in?

I would consider taking the morning off for registration next year, but my work computer is faster and better internet here, plus multiple screens lol.

Are we seeing another round of Running Renaissance?
Was kinda wondering the same thing... On a local level, races that would fill up fast have been having spots open almost till race day. Other races just shut down and havent returned post covid. The big local marathon had just around 1000 runners while other marathons within a hour barely had 500 folks and are now just a double loop course because of the cost of their full course.
I actually expected the Full, and maybe a couple others, to last a while (a few hours to a couple days) this time. I’m a little surprised.
I was telling a friend that the full could be open for several days maybe a month. I could not have been more wrong. Is this overreaction to last year or something else.

Yeah, that's one of the things that was giving me pause. On the one hand, it's easy to find it all here, but (and I'm cackling at the irony because this is totally what the "SAFD should have it's own thread" people must feel) it would be easier to keep it (a thread for the not-so-swift among us looking for some company, since the Goof Troop is already a thing for the quicker) organized if it were on its own. Anywho. Just trying to figure it out. Lots of good points raised.

While it takes a good bit of work, if you recall in the earlier versions of the yearly general running thread I had posted anyone's races in the first or second post with goal time and results. Doing something similar, but just for MW may be able to help runners with the same goals meet up. Unfortunately, doing that does take a bit of work for the OP or someone on the first page to make it easier to find.

Regarding post-COVID race numbers, I'm somewhat surprised the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is still open, about a month after registration opened. It was previously a lottery race pre-COVID. Of course, the current entry fee is $200, compared to ~$60 when I first tried to register in 2012 and could not get in because it sold out so fast. No doubt that fee has something to do with it. My son is running it and I wanted to run along with him, but not at that price, for a race I've already done 4x. I'll just drive up and cheer him on as a spectator.

Was the proof of time deadline for 2024 posted yet? I saw an FAQ that references "results between January 1,2021 and September 26, 2023", but when is the last day to make the change on the website?

1.) I attempted to register myself (dopey) and DH (5/10/half) and got a payment error screen after submitting the payment. I was then unable to click the pay button and it said I needed to go back and reload the page. When I did this it deleted all of the previously completed registrations. Give the issues I had seen with similar situations during W&D registration, I registered myself and then used a spare queue to register DH for all of his races.

2.) No. I have no POTs
3.) Yes, but I had access to 13 queues. (Several of them were still at "more than an hour" at 10:40 when I finished registering.)

When does hotel booking open for next year? I haven't decided yet where I'm staying, but it is kinda annoying it's not available yet.

Should be around June when packages for WDW become available. I think a year or so ago, maybe things opened up late May. I could be mistaken on that one though.

Historically June. This is how Disney operates. In the past you could book room only 499 days in advance if you called but that option is no longer. Online bookings have always been June-ish for the following year.

Can provide references! :D

So if you pick a time that requires a POT during registration do you not have to provide proof of it until later? Or do you just pick a time that does not require POT and after registration update?
When you select from the drop down it asks you if you will finish under 4:30 (POT required) or over 4:30. If you select under at time of registration you will have to enter the POT. If you select over you pick an estimated time from a drop down. To speed up the process most pick over and then go back in after to add their POT.

It’s hard to know the exact reasons, but rD/Disney have done an incredible job of creating and cultivating a perception of scarcity to go along with the obvious demand on their races currently. The group FOMO around the races is apparently very real.

I also think the registration process helps the FOMO feed on itself. They’ve made getting into and through the queue a competition now and once you’ve “won” I think anyone undecided about things feels like they should sign up for everything they were contemplating (for themselves and others) because they were “lucky” enough to get through. The queue also creates a distorted sense of urgency.

Of course the easy answer is that there’s still just more demand on the races than I realized. I think the proximity to New Year’s again this year is making it easier for people to travel. Perhaps 2025 will see a decline with the likely move back to Jan. 9-12.
