A honeymoon, a 3rd wheel & 3 very full tummies: We get how much food?!?!? 19 Nights DxDP!!!!

Thank you for the wonderful start to what will be a great review of your trip. Great introduction... Love the photos... Interesting way of displaying the value of your DDXP... Citricos looks great, and I have heard of many similar experiences at Akershus breakfasts.

Looking forward to the next review!

Glad you enjoyed Citricos, but too bad Arkeshus was a bust, I agree with your assessment that it was likely timing, as most buffets usually are! I LOVE the spreadshreet, please keep including that!!!

Great review so far! Too bad that Akershus was such a disappointment. It can only get better from there, right?! :)

We will be including it for each and every day, and then at the end we will do a final analysis. I'm interested myself as, until I put it all together, I don't know if we even got good value or not!!!

September 18th - Day 2 – Dinner – Hoop De Doo Revue

Peta and I were super excited to head back to Fort Wilderness for what we consider to be one of the most fun dining experiences at WDW! I was feeling a little nervous that Trent would think it was tacky, but he had got into the spirit with the Wild West dinner show at Disneyland Paris, and I got category 1 for the late show on the plan, so I figured it was worth the gamble! Peta on the other had was feeling exhausted from the jet lag, and nearly fell asleep on the boat over (we decided to monorail to MK, then boat over as this gets you closest to Pioneer Hall). I did regret that decision later, and should have driven then used the internal buses as it took us a long time to get back via multiple buses.

Oh well! Didn’t bother me, we arrived early and had our obligatory photo:

PhotoPass_Visiting_WDWRESORTSANDMORE_7806031404_zpsfxewzjyp.jpeg

Then we were quickly ushered inside and DELIGHTED to be escorted to our front row table! We got so much interaction from here!

Our table was already set with cornbread and salad:

20160917_204106_zpsdgthkik4.jpg

I remembered LOVING the cornbread here so I dove right in! Trent followed! And even between two of us we asked for more! Peta was sad that they didn’t have a GF option but quickly forgot that when the chef came out to figure out what she would like to have. Salad was fresh and tasty, a nice start to the meal.

Soon enough the show started and then it was on to having the mains dumped onto the table (yes, if you haven’t been before they just slam them down on the table in front of you!). Everything was delicious, just as I remembered!

Plus buckets of baked beans, corn and mashed potato!

We LOVE this kind of food and I think mostly because we just can’t get it in the same way over here! I am most fond of the Mash and ribs and Trent dove into the fried chicken and corn. He gave the beans a miss and I was disappointed to find that these were a bit cold today L They are not my favourite though so I didn’t dwell, just went back for more of the other stuff!!

Of course, Peta had her own meal – she had asked for lots of veggies, and that is what she got!!!

20160917_214253_zpsmm0g21st.jpg

Sorry, oddly I don’t seem to have a close up photo (I sense I am missing some of my shots as I definitely recall taking one this time!)

After mains they went around the tables as part of the shows and got much enjoyment out of us being from Australia. Our Just Married badges had also not gone unnoticed and they made us stand up and dance with another couple celebrating their anniversary! I was so embarrassed at the time but it was so much fun and it made us feel really special. Trent is super shy usually but he got right into it. Sadly no photos as Peta was too busy laughing at us to snap any pics!!!

From there, it was on to dessert, Strawberry Shortcake!

20160917_220222_zps2zre5nmt.jpg

Peta got given her own version and oops….I forgot a photo but it did look almost identical.

I’m not a huge fan of strawberry shortcake, but Trent ate a decent amount. Peta barely touched hers and I regretted asking for a taste – it was hard, chewy and just not at all palatable. We Had a good laugh at the attempt anyway!

And so, the score card:

Food: 3/5 (although simple and delicious, had to dock some for the dessert)

Service: 4/5

Experience: 5/5 – Super fun way to end the night!!!

I haven't eaten at Akershus since they went to the Princess dining, and after reading so many not so good reviews, and considering I have four young grandsons, I can't see myself going there any time soon. Sad, as I really enjoyed it in the past. We hadn't been to the HDD in years, and my husband & I went back on our most recent trip this past fall. I'm gluten free and was given GF cornbread. It was yummy. Is there another ingredient in it that Peta doesn't eat, like dairy perhaps? Can't think of any other reason she wouldn't have gotten any.

What a fun night a HDD! Even if it is embarrassing in the moment, it is certainly an awesome memory!!

Great report, we loved HDDR, we did this last August. We were in the back on main floor because we paid OOP, but we still had a great view! I loved the food, show and dessert!

Joining in and loving it so far. I've been keen to try hoop de doo and the food is right up my husband's ally

Oh no! Our server and the chef said they didn't have any :confused3 We even asked especially. I'd put GF on our reservation as well. Maybe they just didn't have any left. I just sent Peta a message - she says this is cause to do back to Disney and back to HDR! :rotfl2:

September 19th - Day 3 – California Grill Brunch

Our plans for today were quieter than yesterday. I figure when I booked this that Peta would have been able to make it through the day before but been crashing by today. Usually I find that the day after arrival you are running on a mixture of adrenaline and mixed up melatonin due to the change to the sleep pattern. We always find it’s the day after that it hits us hard.

As a result we planned today as a shopping day! For several reasons:

1) We love shopping

2) We love shopping even more in the US due to the bargain prices

3) Peta would be exhausted (and I was right) and

4) I managed to grab a brunch reservation when the Cali Grill dates released and I did not want to waste a park morning!

Also, if you read my pre-trip report you may also know that this evening our good friends Clint, Steph and their children Ellie (17m) and Reuben (3) were joining us for the next 5 nights / 6 days after we treated them to a stay at the Poly Villas and then a night at AKL villas! I was keen to take it easy in preparation for heavy park days to follow!

We had a leisurely start to the day before catching the monorail over to the Contemporary Resort! Although we stayed at BLT later in the trip it’s so easy to get there from the GF that I wasn’t bothered about waiting until then.

When we signed in a few minutes early they invited us to sit on couches waiting to go up. Well, we head over to the seats but did not sit…..they were COVERED in dead bugs….like everywhere!

32898936210_3fd63cd27d.jpg

This was actually a common theme and we had several repeat experiences of this. I believe they had maybe sprayed extra due to the Zika virus scare but was somewhat gobsmacked that they hadn’t cleaned up. They weren’t isolated to the one couch, they were on every one!

Luckily, we were called only a few minutes later and we were able to head straight up in the elevator.

We were served welcome drinks the minute we arrived and since non of us are big drinkers we went with the mocktail. It was delicious and I believe Trent had several more during the meal, while Peta and I had 2 each!

Before we sat down, we were taken to see the buffet and Peta was given a tour with the chef, to pick out some safe options.

There were limited options for Peta so the chef prepared some devilled eggs without bacon on top:

32439005274_efca866f96.jpg

She also dove into a huge plate of fruit and salad options:

33153692211_27f9a7d6a1.jpg

Then we sat down at the table, which was a window seat with a view of MK:

32439003404_d3ca39a6de.jpg

We were served some great pastries/scones (which is what we call biscuits) to the table:

32898937040_2f6e214420.jpg

Pecan Sticky Bun, Country Cheddar Biscuit, Huckleberry Muffin

Trent enjoyed the sticky bun despite again complaining it was too sweet for breakfast, and I loved the biscuit! Neither of us was wowed by the muffin, it had a weird sticky texture that, combined with the dried fruit was just not very nice.

And Peta was not left out, although she only got one option:

32439004514_68ee3b47eb.jpg

She was a little disappointed, and didn’t really like the muffins either. She instead went back for seconds at the buffet.

There were some really good options for me too:

33153692761_0e81d3f1e9.jpg

The sushi was fresh and well made, but nothing special (I have high standards – sushi is basically my favourite food to eat out). Salads were fresh and tasty and I will never say no to a cheeseboard!

Trent sampled similar offerings:

33153693311_5cbef51dbd.jpg

None of us ate too much as we were waiting on mains and just soaking up the atmosphere. We did go back for seconds after mains – although I didn’t snap our second plates!

Our Mains came out quickly anyway (This meal took nowhere near as long as I expected – they were quick and efficient and seemed to be in somewhat of a hurry to turn over tables, not the standard signature dining experience in that sense.

Trent ordered the:

33240828176_ae18627f5d.jpg

Grilled Hanger Steak - Two Eggs Any Style, Chimichurri, Marble Potato Hash and Charred Red Onion

He enjoyed this (can you tell yet, he is a fan of steak?) It was a little overcooked for medium rare, but he said that the hash was good and the chimichurri added moisture to the steak, which may otherwise been too dry.

I went with the:
32439023114_6dc371ee33.jpg

Eggs Benedict – With Salmon subbed out for the honey ham usually on the muffins

This was delicious! Super creamy hollandaise, though not too rich. Pouched eggs soft cooked to perfection! Super tasty version of my favourite brunch when back home.

Peta had the same, but without any meat:

33153698571_873551b85e.jpg

As you can see below she didn’t enjoy it at all :P

32467188523_3ff0351af1.jpg

It’s very unusual for Peta to polish off a plate like that, but I think her body was finally catching up from the jet lag, allowing her to be hungry at mealtimes again. Of course, despite being small eaters, both her and I also ate more than usual on this trip due to the miles and miles of walking excessive sweating in the heat (well, humidity, it is MUCH hotter in Australia but the humidity really takes it out of you!).

For dessert they bring out a mix of macaroons, cookies and truffles:

32439035364_bc97677c38.jpg

And Peta got her own plate of GF ones:

33282012125_1d60eaece2.jpg

This looked a little sad when compared to ours!

The truffles were quite good, rather fruity flavours. Macaroons were sadly a little bland and the brittle? Was quite good. In reality though, we were really to full to appreciate dessert at this stage so it wasn’t a big focus point for us.

And so, the score card:

Food: 4/5 – only thing to fault here was not enough dressing on some salads and the weird muffins. We will be back!

Service: 5/5 – Very attentive server, who continually checked in to make sure Peta was accommodated OK!

Experience: 4/5 the view can’t be beat but we prefer Cali Grill at night as we discovered later in the trip!

The food looked great at CG brunch! I would love to try it but with 2 kids that won't eat much, I can justify the cost

September 19th - Day 3 – O’hana Dinner

I cannot tell you how absolutely excited we were to head over to the Polynesian after shopping. It was about 5.30pm and although it was still very sticky out, it was a nice leisurely stroll over to the Polynesian.

33282013435_91c6535c11.jpg

We were super excited to meet up with Clint, Steph, Ellie and Reuben! We had let them pick the dinners whilst they were staying but were thrilled as they had picked meals that we were interested in doing anyway! Tonight we were up for O’hana, which was they only meal we hadn’t considered before they suggested it – mostly because of the meat component which did not appeal to Peta – she was a good sport though and was excited just for some fried veggies!

After we meet Clint and Steph early for our reservation we checked in straight away. It was a good 20 minutes until we were called but it went by quickly as we were busy introducing Trent (who I had only just met last time I saw them) and catching up. Soon enough we buzzed and it was time to head in!

33170503921_884e31b6cd.jpg

This was one reservation I was aware that I needed to flag my banana allergy at: I had put ‘other’ on the reservation and mentioned it at check in. Unfortunately the message hadn’t got through and we literally got the grumpiest CM I have encountered to date. I mentioned the allergy and she raised her voice stating that we couldn’t have any bread and she would need to check with the kitchen. When I stated that there was only banana in dessert and just wondered if there was another option she snapped back with “you can’t have anything till you have seen the chef”. I understand that allergies require certain procedures but there was absolutely no reason to be rude or raise her voice. We were thankful she was not the server for her table. I assume she may have been just having a bad night, so I won’t share her name here, but I did save it for later and send through a complaint. Steph and Clint have a lot of experience at Disney and said that likewise, they had never seem a CM be so rude!

Thankfully, our server was polite, we asked for some bread to keep the kids from fussing and he got it straight away. After checking the bread, as suspected had no bananas, he brought us some too:

33170503631_4bb793c262.jpg

Pineapple-Coconut Bread

This was tasty and the pineapple gave it a nice sweetness but it was also a little tough, and neither Trent nor I enjoyed the texture.

Peta got some Gluten Free rolls, which she said were tasty and not too dense – from this point out she had the same rolls at most dinners and never got sick of them!

32483889223_d437e94c65.jpg

Steph enjoyed some bread as well and the kids devoured it! Clint had been working on a healthy eating a fitness routine for a while and was still maintaining the program whilst on vacation. Thus, he was off carbs and mostly focusing on high protein and lots of vegetables. This meal was definitely going to suit him!

The chef then came out and talked with Peta and I and he arranged Veggies for Peta and Bread and Butter pudding without the bananas for me!!! Woohoo! I didn’t have to miss out!

After that, the server also brought mac and cheese and nuggets for Reuben and Ellie. And the food began straight away with noodles, dumplings, wings and salad:

32898972630_01a407fd58.jpg

Pork Dumplings tossed in Garlic-Ginger Sauce; Honey-Coriander Chicken Wings; Noodles and Vegetables.

Peta got her own plate of GF noodles and veggies, but DOH! I forgot to take a picture!

We all enjoyed the dumplings, but thought the noodles were a bit plain. I did take the opportunity to eat quite a bit of broccoli and Trent and I tried the wings but agreed they weren’t that flavourful and were a little cold.

The meat followed quickly:

32898973180_bfb3954028.jpg

Sweet-n-Sour Chicken; Szechuan Sirloin Steak and Spicy Grilled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp

*Sorry – I was slack with photos here*

I think Clint, Steph, Trent and I lost track of how much meat we had! Everything was amazingly good! We don’t usually eat a lot of marinated chicken but it was moist and the sweet coating was very tasty! Trent mostly focused on the steak, which I agreed was fantastic – it basically fell apart in our mouths! So tender and juicy. Trent is not a huge shrimp fan but I went for several servings, and was delighted by the little kick of spice on this.

Suffice to say: by the time dessert rolled around I wondered how I would even eat anymore!

Clint and Steph were super pumped about this dessert and had been raving about this since we reserved it 180 days out!

33282016155_32021114df.jpg

‘Ohana Bread Pudding à la mode with Bananas-Caramel Sauce

Sorry! I forgot a photo of my version.

Peta got something similar but instead of the caramel banana sauce it had berries? Forgot a close up photo but here is her enjoying it:

32898971920_4abc05eca1.jpg

Peta thought hers was quite sweet and didn’t make it through even half.

Although Clint and Steph devoured theirs, we were not as thrilled and agreed it was simply too sweet and very heavy, not really our kind of dessert at all. Not to mention that we were stuffed from the multiple rounds of meat.

PLEASE NO ONE STOP READING BECAUSE WE DIDN’T LIKE THE BREAD PUDDING!!!!

And so, the score card:

Food: 3/5 – dessert was the let down here

Service: 1/5 – Unfortunately the first CM left a bad taste in our mouths

Experience: 3/5 – Fun atmosphere, nice and relaxed

Sorry you had such an awful Hostess/CM, as someone who has worked service my whole life, I would have spoken to a manager directly, that is just unacceptable! Glad the rest of the meal picked up, and in fact you are the first "solid" O'hana review I have read in awhile.
