Boma…not sure what to think now after latest vid

We have always loved Boma in the past, and I made a reservation for it for our trip in March. I caught the review last night and Pete’s disappointment in it. Wow. Not sure what to think now. Has it really gotten that bad? Anyone on here been recently and can vouch for their assessment, or are they being unnecessarily critical?

We were there in October 2021 and didn’t see any real difference from prior trips. I don’t go there for strip loin and ribs, though. The soups and salads were as good as ever and the vegetarian, African-inspired dishes were very flavorful. I did try both the chicken and salmon and I didn’t notice a difference there either. It did seem there were fewer dessert choices.

Maybe the reviewers hit it on a bad night. Or maybe the labor shortages caught up with them and different people are cooking the food now.

We went in oct and was pretty disappointed in the breakfast. The same foods as the quick service plus pastries...

I was there for dinner about 3 weeks ago and I found it to be as good as I remembered. I've been going there since AKL opened so I have a little experience with dining there. Food and service were excellent.

We had dinner there in Sept and it was really good. We had been doing breakfast there for past several years and decided to switch it up and go to dinner. We loved it.

We were there in November and the vegetarians, carnivores, omnivores and just plain picky eaters all enjoyed it. In fact, we enjoyed it enough that we were overstuffed and took a long walk around the resort afterwards:rotfl2:

They discussed dinner (and Pete in particular complained that the meats weren't seasoned enough).

I felt it was super weird to hear him dismiss the buffet and not having staff serve. Like ... well, ironically, I can't really post what he said because I believe any of us stating it would violate the covid policy here. I think it's a reasonable point and view to have if you decide not to go (but it seems weird to opt to go and be so sarcastic about it).

Every time I hear Pete complain about things not being seasoned, I always wonder, did he try to add some salt? I mean, it's the simplest way to fix a food item that you find underseasoned. Does he expect a spice rub on everything? Its such a common complaint at this point that I'm starting to think he isn't aware that as you age, you lose the ability to taste foods like you used to. Not to mention, smoking dulls your taste buds.

I always find that such a subjective opinion and no one else ever seems to share it. I wish he'd quit levying that criticism.

I'll admit that I hadn't watched their dining reviews before this and had a very different expectation going in (thinking it might be more like a newspaper food critic). I sat with it for a little bit and came to think that this is a lot like overhearing a group of people say their own personal likes/dislikes (which you hit on the head as to some of the reasons that people taste things a certain way). And that's cool for what it is - but I also would hate to see a thread of people suddenly decide not to try some place based on it alone. Just about any time I recommend something (food, music, tv, a place to travel), I try to couch it in - this is what I like/appreciate and if it's your taste, you might, too. And if you like/appreciate something significantly different - you might like it on your own or not but it's not the same point of reference.

I watch all the dining review videos and Pete complains about food being underseasoned on almost every single one. At this point, it's not the food, it's him.

That is a very good point about age and the taste buds. I didn’t realized he smoked either.

He literally mentioned on a DCL show the other day that he leaves halfway through dinner to have a cigarette and when he is on a ship with a casino, he uses that opportunity to gamble. Like, in the middle of a meal.
