DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Morning All, looks like summer is back for a bit. A few nice days coming up here.

Fairly busy at work. We are done two staff, not replacing one and our board didn't want to replace the other person right away. I must have made a good argument because I will be posting the job today or tomorrow.

Have a good one all.

Thanks man. Unfortunately as I joined through my DVC profile page to get the discount, they just refunded me, so I'm out the race as an international, as it seems to be beyond the wit of Disney to ship something over to me. Apart from my dues bill, that seems to turn up just fine. I haven't cancelled my flight yet, its just if the missus will cover the whole kids thing for me to go on a a jolly. I don't think your motorcycle goes that slow ;). If I build up enough good boy points between now and Jan, who knows. It was always a long shot to get to FL in Jan, but we'll see.

Come on over here, we'll run in the cold, hang out and have a few drinks while joining by video.

Good Morning! Awhile back I asked for recommendations for a new computer, I wanted to thank you all for your help, and to let you know what I got. Thanks to Mark’s input, I got a iPad Pro with a Logitech keyboard case. Absolutely love it! 😶💙. Thanks Mark for all your help.

Did you get a Starbucks Chai No Fat No Whip Moca Latte Frappa as well?

It is quite amazing, isn't it? They can get a bill to you, but any support or common sense??? Peh! Sorry mate.

don't think your motorcycle goes that slow ;).
You'd be surprised how slow I can go. #TWSS

Hoping you can still make it in January.

Morning folks.

Bad/scary news yesterday, and I only learned about it by sheer luck. Was browsing headlines and came across an article. I stopped... "wait a minute... could that be..." Yup. My company is laying off 14% of its workforce and closing stations across the country. The two biggest are the Halifax one and the Winnipeg one. (Luckily, there are two separate business functions/buildings and only one is closing... and not mine.) So for now, I'm safe, but I also know it wouldn't take too much more of a push to close my division down and amalgamate it into another city's division. Keeping fingers crossed and holding breath.

In other news, I have two days off right now and figure with the nice weather were supposed to have today and tomorrow (highs around 24C/75F) I might take an overnight cruise on the bike. Haven't 100% made up my mind yet. Too cold to do a long drive right now. (6C/43F)

Congrats on the new purchase. :)

Same here. Wish it would last just a little longer. Say... 9 months.

Yikes. That's a scary thought. Here's hoping you will not be affected. Is this due to the dropoff in air travel over the year?

Morning all. Survived another shift. And, I think that's about it. I like the job, can deal with the repetition, other guys are decent, but I don't want to work that many hours. During the interview, they asked if I could work "occasional" overtime. Apparently, 19 consecutive days all year round is considered occasional. Rumors are that shift won't be changing in November, and I'm not wanting to work that many hours. And, I'm not enjoying 2nd shift. Maybe the pay will offset it? But, I haven't seen that yet. So, I applied for some other jobs today. However, a concern is that this current place is recession proof. They can't seem to hire enough people. If I leave for something else and that doesn't work out, then I probably wouldn't be able to return.

We did a virtual run (DD & myself) but haven't received our medals yet. I used a DISfriend's address in the US.

By virtual run, does it mean I have to actually run? I think I just ran around the block. Does that count? :lmao:

You can always visit me in Kentucky, but who would want to come here. And, it's cold in January.

Is that a computer or a tablet? I had to use DW's computer to plug in to USB to email my resume to upload it to job sites. Or, do I need to ask Mark?

That is scary, especially when you see it first in the news as opposed to hearing it from your employer. Glad to hear you made it.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken, I believe numbers are down around 85%.

Counts. You just have to add more blocks. Actually, I know people have walked them.

Yeah, was less than impressed that I found out that way. Would've been nice to hear it from the CEO first.

I imagined myself running a marathon... that's virtual right? Virtual reality?

It's an iPad, so tablet. With the addition of the keyboard, functionality is creeping towards laptop.
I think you had your resume on a thumb drive and had to use her computer's USB port to access it.

Morning, Gents! All's well on my end. I start my new temp job tomorrow. You know, while I'm happy to be getting out of the house and working, I'm actually not looking forward to giving up all my free time....not that I've done a whole lot, but I've done it well and will miss it. :teeth: At least I'm working. Outside that things are going well. Still trying to plan a trip to the World, though I know the Mrs. won't want to take a trip because we can't afford it, which, right now I'll agree with, but that can't stop me from planning, now does it? :teeth: I love planning trips.

Survived the first night. The machinery/ technology is absolutely amazing. The terminology & training, not so much. Basically, I watch and try to memorize everything. I've greased the machines, loaded some of the product, cleared some of the jams, and know how to disengage the safety alarms. :scared1:

So far, everyone is nice and says it takes awhile to learn everything.

Congrats on surviving the first night. And it usually does take a while to learn everything, so give it time.

Maybe. Where there is smoke, there's fire? Who knows.

Sorry to hear it. Hope it works out.

Thanks.

I typed that wrong - 19/2. Yes, they are working 19 straight days with 2 days off, which means OT and double pay OT after so many consecutive days. The 2,2,3 is designed to prevent that, and keep the line running. 2 days on, 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off, etc for 12 hour shifts. Basically, you get every other weekend off. I wouldn't imagine they will pay OT to train me, but who knows. I'll stick with it a while, but not for long working that many days.

I kind of thought that's what those numbers meant, but had to ask. 19 days on? Wow! Hey, if you can do it, just think of the pay checks. I know, that would be a tough schedule for anyone to pull. Not sure I could pull that.

She's been home since COVID, and said she was way more productive at home than the office. She said the biggest difficulty was not having a permanent place, and moving stuff around the house to different work areas.

My friend says the same thing about being more productive at home. As for the permanent place to work, that is tough.

Probably. I'm not worried about it. She's an adult and I've done the best I could do raising her. I might think they are too young, but that's there decision.

That's all you can do, raise them right and let them make the decisions and hope it's the right one.

A good friend dated his girlfriend in high school, thru college, and got married after grad school. So, maybe 7 years? They divorced 2 years into their marriage. I worked with my wife for 2 months after she was hired. We dated for 9 months before I proposed, married 5 months after that, and it's been 20 years. Who knows what is the right way.

Exactly! One never knows the right path. Though they say that you know who that person is when you see/meet them. I knew with my wife. We dated two years in college and one year after college before I asked her to marry me, and then one year of being engaged. We've been married now 15 years.

I know, right?! So T'd off when I found out that I had been kicked off the insurance, especially after I was told I'd have it.

Well, that's convenient.

Yep...though I don't use that card all that often, only when I really need it.

You put that in writing? Won't they kick you out of the country? Or force you to get a gun?

I know, don't know what I was doing when I put that in writing. However, I do support the right to bear arms, and will defend that right. I do need to get one, though. Not sure if the Mrs. will approve of me dropping a few hundred on a gun when I'm trying to drop a few hundred on a new camera lens. Decision! Decisions!

Happy Wednesday. Most of the machines were running yesterday, so I was able to run them and learn quite a bit. I can't guess how much sauce I ran, but conservative estimate is in the 10 thousand jar range. Downside is the repetition. Perhaps the money will change my mind, but I don't see this as a long term career option.

Are you in a position to listen to some music? Get some headphones, plug in and listen to some tunes, or an audio book...maybe that'll help with the repetition. Machines are loud, so maybe there's some headphones that you can get that are blue tooth enabled and noise cancelling.

It's supposed to work that way. A herd of jars are automatically loaded into the tray. A jam may be that a jar is turned sideways or upside down, then I have to stop the machine and manually fix the jar. The challenge is the longer the stop, then the more time/ money is lost vs not stopping & losing product to breakage based on orientation.

I can see how that can be challenging.

You could come visit me and run my neighborhood. I'll even give you a morocycle escort.

Now there's an incentive.

Thanks man. Unfortunately as I joined through my DVC profile page to get the discount, they just refunded me, so I'm out the race as an international, as it seems to be beyond the wit of Disney to ship something over to me. I'm hoping my wife tells me to grab the DD and head down without her at some point...though I'm not holding my breath.

Dude! That's not a cool way to find out. Glad to hear you still have a job.

Afternoon. Work is a mutha right now. Good luck to the guys with new jobs and hoping all works out for you guys with them. Dan - sorry about the marathons being cancelled but I think you should still attend. All the best to you and the families, stay safe!

Hope all stays positive for you with this - seeing something like that in the paper does not speak highly of the HR overlords (stole that from Rob)

Morning all. Production ran fairly smoothly last night at work. This morning, I received a call from an application I submitted yesterday. It is back in clinical services, working with substance use/ addiction, something I'm degreed, trained, and licensed to do. I'm not sure if I'm ready to jump back into that world, but they are setting up an interview next week and I'll entertain offers. I play tennis with the guy who runs it, and he'll be there for the interview as well.

Tablet no USB...

Got it. Thanks.

I imagined myself running a marathon... that's virtual right? Virtual reality?

I think so. I made my Mii character run on my Nintendo Wii. That counts too, right?

I think you had your resume on a thumb drive and had to use her computer's USB port to access it.

::yes::

Being an Android fan, that's one of the advantages...have USB ports on my tablet, which makes transferring stuff to/from tablet and phone much more convenient.

You have a recommendation for me? If I get a new company computer, then maybe it won't be necessary. Some of those are locked down though. But, I'd like to have something better than my phone, capable to plug in USB, is fast, and doesn't cost a bazillion dollars.

Planning trips are fun and free. But, it doesn't replace going. We've went and spent way more money than we should have over the years, but I can't say I regret it. We've had 24 Disney vacations, plus a few other locations. Sure, I had to wait to get my truck until I retired, and our house is a modest one. But, we've made some great memories as my dds now have their own lives. I don't see much of them now, and it will be less in the future.

I kind of thought that's what those numbers meant, but had to ask. 19 days on? Wow! Hey, if you can do it, just think of the pay checks. I know, that would be a tough schedule for anyone to pull. Not sure I could pull that.

I'm not sure I can pull that off either. The pay is great. Time away, not so much. I felt guilty in applying for other jobs so quickly, however, I wasn't told about that much overtime.

I know, don't know what I was doing when I put that in writing. However, I do support the right to bear arms, and will defend that right. I do need to get one, though. Not sure if the Mrs. will approve of me dropping a few hundred on a gun when I'm trying to drop a few hundred on a new camera lens. Decision! Decisions!

I don't know enough about photography, but guns can be an expensive hobby.

I guess it's a good sign to be busy than not. Hope work doesn't stress you out too much.
