October, 2015, PTR/TR: East versus West Coast Halloween Throwdown!

hey lynne. ok i thought the 11th was HHN meet, mini golf, something or other. If we are able to come up that night likely wouldn't be at U much before 4 pm. Do you have plans to go into the parks at all that afternoon?

I might be, as IOA should be open later and with an AP burning in my pocket, and so close to the parks, camera toting time it could be. Since I land around 2:30, I will be stopping for some food and water bottle, I most likely will not be in the park until after 4 either. I can pm you my cell number. If you cannot, that is ok too.

Wow Janet.....what an epic trip!! :worship:

"Not-quite-dead" my patootie. You have an itinerary that speaks volumes to just how young-at-heart you two must be (if not young in years).

I can't imagine how much planning has gone into such a fantastic adventure!! And I can't wait to read all about it as it unfolds (and afterward). You'll have to do some "live reporting" when you get a free moment.....lol, if you get any free moments!!

Would be awesome to meet up with you at our Margaritaville Dismeet on the 12th! Go for MNSSHP on the 13th instead, so you can join us for a cocktail :drinking1 on the Monday night.

yes, we are still hanging, by our toes. :-) Go big or go home lol. Never much to putz around the resorts other than the pools. Hard when you can hear the parks calling off in the distance.

Will likely miss the 12th, was shooting for that date as to MNSSHP but I plan on checking the 10 day extended forecast before I purchase either the 12th or 13th.

Lynne - yes, not a good idea to activate the AP too soon, might want to work it for another HHN trip next year:magnify:.

I admire your stamina!! We usually build in a few resort days just to recover from our park time. We are obviously not aging as gracefully as you and your DH! ;)

Seems like Orlando has had a ton of rain this summer and early autumn. I really hope that our special event dates (MNSSHP & HHN) are rain-free. I know there's no real sense in worrying about the weather, yet its one of the only things that I tend to fret about before we travel.

Wow Janet...what a great trip you have planned.

We might be able to say hi at MCO on your arrival night as our plane leaves at 8:45 on SWA...hope we see you there.

I can't wait to hear about your adventures...sounds like a wonderful time.

i need to take notes on where you will be and when keisha......

but do know i will see you before the private rip tour......

i thought the meet up was on the 11th, now it is the 12th?

they don't call me blonde for nothing........lol

after all the planes you take and all the parks you will be hitting on the vacation, you will need another vacation to recover from this one!

oh yes, the ghouls are a-calling me home to Orlando.

I'm still channeling Lucy, but hope the salon gets me back to some stage of blonde next Sunday. Would hate to scare the beasties.:teeth:

jimmy buffet's place appears to be the place to be on the 12th.

my brain is on permanent vacation:upsidedow need to shake it up every so often with a full travel itinerary lol.

Alrighty, pictures finally uploaded to photobucket in between tossing decorations up for Halloween display and washing a mountain of laundry!

Wednesday, October, 1st
Absolutely no issue with our overnight park & fly @ the Choice Suites PIT. Nice quiet suite, parking included for two weeks & the shuttle was on time in the morning for our (gulp) 4:00 am pickup.

Thursday, October 2nd
Managed to get it together and grab the shuttle time I had scheduled. Airport was rather dead, was happy to get our first TSA PreCheck of the trip, even happier to find out we received it for all our flight legs. Had read here on transportation board that they were going to stop awarding it 'free', a nice surprise. Slept majority of way to Vegas on a non-eventful flight.

We have always been able to get into our room in Vegas even with a 9:00 amish arrival. This time nothing was ready @ Mandalay Bay. We needed to pick up our myvegas comps & tickets. Since nearby Luxor's was open, decided to stroll over and load our cards. Tried a few slots but no love. Still early, we decided to keep strolling up to Excalibur where, while the gaming area is basic, we've tended to have luck. Their casino was buzzing, all open tables were busy with low minimums vs MB. Won small, should've quit on the spot but noooo lol Still enough to walk out of Vegas the next day in the black.:flower:

Lunch was in MB Buffet, enjoyed it in the past, food of good quality and varied. Called the desk afterwards and was told they had a room ready for us. Turned out to be pool view vs the strip I had requested. At this point, just wanted to get down to pool, accepted it. Our first stay here, room was nice size with an interesting bathroom. If there's one thing they do well in the Vegas rooms I've booked is the ample facilities, I love sunken tubs.

For those not familiar with Vegas strip, the Mandalay Bay is southern-most large resort on the strip, near the airport. No, you cannot hear the planes from your room. It was fun watching the traffic in & out of airport while lounging at the wave pool. Wanted to specifically post a picture re the blinding sun lol.
008_zpsporr6u7r.jpg

wave pool had very gentle waves, many didn't brave the pool area complaining it was too cold. In the low 80's but there was a strong breeze off the mountains with no protective wind break from an adjoining resort. Was surprised to only see pool server twice all afternoon, very odd for Vegas.

We needed to head up to Aria for Cirque's Zarkana show. Allowed ourselves plenty of time to take the 2 sets of elevated trams and try our luck @ New York New York (zip) and Monte Carlo where we did hit and planned on stopping back to play more after the show. ha We needed to head to @ Bellagio buffet for dinner, which was surprisingly disappointing considering the price point. Cold seafood (hooray for split crab legs even if they aren't King crab as in the past) & sushi were decent, desserts made the meal for me:teeth:.

Walked back to Aria. One thing I tend to forget each trip is no matter how close the resorts look, they aren't. We racked up close to 10 miles walking this day. A theme that would hold true through out the trip.

Zarkana was first Cirque show to leave me cold, a bit of a mish mash of random act vs the heavily themed shows I prefer. Skill level of performers was good though. Wanted to catch the score of Steeler's game, so we ducked into Aria's south casino. :rolleyes2 should've kept walking. Stopped back @ Monte Carlo to cash in and trek'd back to MB at 2 am, running on fumes at this point. Decided to skip our 'free' breakfast buffet and catch a few extra zzzz's before our flight.

Wow, only the first day and I'm already tired for you hearing everthing you've done.

Glad to know you came out ahead...maybe we'll make Vegas our next trip :scratchin
Can't wait for the next installment popcorn::

tink - thanx, we do enjoy visiting Vegas. As long as you don't break the bank gambling, there are so many deals waiting to be found there. Grand Canyon is driveable as well as Lake Mead/Hoover Dam and tons of shows & fun just to gawk at all the resorts via a stroll on the Strip.

Janet enjoying your trip report. My hubby and I had a few trips to Vegas a few years ago it was nice. They have added some hotels to the strip since we have been there last. Your pictures are great. Look forward to reading your future installments.

YAY..........been looking forward to this one........

Hotel looks gorgeous.....and yes sunken bath fan here too..........and you stepped out in the black...in Vegas.............may need some tips....:rolleyes1

Pictures look glorious.....and wow you crammed a lot in there.........

Waiting for more miss Keisha.........::yes::

Your energy level puts us to shame.....you managed to cram in a ton of things in one day!! :worship:

Love the pics of the lazy river and wave pool, they are so much fun. An admitted water baby, I could spend entire vacations in the pool and never be bored.

Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures. If this is you just "warming up", I can't wait to see what was next on the itinerary!

ooh nice Vegas day. Only time I stayed there was for work, and we stayed at Paris, so the kids got to see the fountain do it's thing across the street, at night. We had a strip view. Did not hear the traffic and was a great location. Maybe we'll visit again. It always seems to be advertized and SW flies direct every day. In fact, since SW refuses to do direct to CA, we're also stopping to visit the ever so pretty (LOL) LV airport for 1 hour before catching our other plane into SD. For that matter, with only a hour layover, I'll bet we won't even be allowed off the plane. :joker:

Ready for more pictures! And your abbreviated TR. 8-)

gina - yes, I am all about the poolscapes, doesn't hurt that vegas has lots & lots of eye candy! hehe

lynne - yes, ever since AirTran was absorbed by SWA, poof went the NS flights to west coast. Gives me an even better excuse to stop over for a night. Hmmm an hour, I figure that would afford you a 15 solid minutes of the airport slots. Always thought they were money pits until my neighbor informed me he hit big there last April.

Ok, onto beautiful downtown Burbank! Day #2, Universal City Hilton & HHN-VIP package

My DH is the boy scout of our dynamic duo. He is stickler for following the rules, so we are always at the airport bright and early. Took all of 5 minutes in taxi to LAS from the Mandalay. No line @ bag check, received pre TSA again, were at our gate almost 3 hours early. Shortly thereafter, flight was delayed. At least there were plenty of charging stations, whipped out the ipad to pass the time. Surprised to find it was a sold out flight into BUR with standbys even though it was a Friday. Less than an hour flight, took a nap. The three hour time change wasn't going down easy this trip.

I picked BUR this flight because a) it looked closest to Universal Hollywood & b) the shuttle ride was less expensive that from LAX. Was shocked to deplane and walk down steps. More surprised to find the luggage carousel outside.

the terminal reminded me of one you'd see in Caribbean. So small, it's the building in the middle, parking garage off to the right, but very easy to navigate. Had to cross the street to find the shuttle stop where this was taken. Notice, it's 1:30 pm on a Friday and practically deserted. A hidden gem for those who live in the area, lucky them.

Not a fan of Super Shuttle this trip. Long wait for our van. Once it arrived a short drive to the Hilton. Check in was easy, after a mis-step @ the Clearwater Hilton this year, pleasd to say our visits to Daytona Beach & the Universal City properties redeemed the brand.

Going from memory will say we were on 27th floor. View looking towards Burbank, you can see part of Universal on the right, Simpsons area.

excuse the room lighting, was too lazy to pull out good camera. An older property but well kept, they were doing some work on updating elevators but we had no issue.
235_zps0l5xuiwe.jpg

Just missed the shuttle to Citiwalk that ran every half hour, decided to take the 10 minute walk. Ha! 10 minutes for goats, up the steepest hill imaginable. Only two restaurants were accepting reservations, we settled upon Hard Rock, even though not fans typically. Surprised the wings & burger were very good & alcohol was reasonably priced. Happy Hour'd out, ready to attack HHN. You won't find much in way of food porn in my TRs. I am slowly weaning him away from the idea it's déclassé and all in the interest of information lol.

Since we purchased the VIP upgrade, were permitted to enter the park @ 5 pm, even though the official entry time was 7 pm. There was already a looong line for regular entry. The lower lot area was open with Mummy & Jurassic Park in the Dark, which we skipped not wanting to be soaked all night. Chatted up a guy who happened to be an off-duty TM. He advised us not to use our one per VIP pass to the houses upfront, but to roll thru the lower lot before the regular crowd hit. Great advice, we managed to walk thru everything at least twice, our favorites 3 times there before needing to use the passes

The park amazes me as to how it is laid out working around hillsides. PS miley cyrus lives off to the right of golf course in background I'm told.

I was surprised how differently USH does some things versus USO. One of the most striking was that the majority of houses were tents with low ceilings. I felt this to be a distraction, especially as light would often filter through along the roof line. We visited what was a highly rated house (Insidious) by critics first, they opened it at approximately 5:45 pm. I was so thrown off by the bright light and few scares I needed to regroup when exiting the house, starting to fear I had made a huge mistake working in USH. We walked over to TWD, where despite the intrusive light, enjoyed the first rate actors and the inventive gags. It was quite the shock to get quite wet in the scene with the 3 people over the tub. Woohoo, let the mayhem begin.

The houses/scare zones in the lower area & my thoughts are listed below. Note that even though I may not be over the moon over a house (I admit to taking my haunts seriously); I do appreciate all the work involved in producing each offering. Even a talented actor can be severely constrained by construction, story-line, lighting & sound. I applaud the labor of love that is involved.

Insidious I was so relieved when our subsequent tours thru it were an improvement. Have a feeling they opened the house well before it was actually lighted properly and the actors in their proper places. I've never given much stock to theory it takes the house time to 'warm up' each night, but this was a perfect example. Not a huge fan of the movie franchise, nor of this house.

The Walking Dead, Wolves Not Far A home run!!! fans of the franchise & zombies in general, thrilled to see how they ran with Terminus.

This is the End 3-D When you say it's not as bad as reported, it's typically faint praise. In this case the puppets were worth the walk thru and the actors did elevate the gags.

There was a tram that delivered guests to the other lower lot area. You were let out to turn the corner and run into The Maze of Madness. Very well done, I was initially confused we had stumbled into The Purge by mistake. After a short walk we saw the remaining two houses in this area.
Crimson Peak Not being familiar with the storyline is always challenging with a house. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. It was very dark, moody & gothic:yay:

AVP: Alien vs Predator Surprise of the night for me. A real wow. Lots of scares, despite seeing similarly themed house @ USO. Hard to top the momma puppet at the end.

It was apparent that we didn't need to purchase the VIP tickets. Crowd was non-existant, speaking to several locals was told there had been a big backlash as to large price increases in the tickets this year and attendance was dramatically off. Lots of empty lines indeed.

Up Next, upper lot & Terror Tram.

Food pics are considered declasse?? Say it isn't so!!

Love that gorgeous blue sky in your Burbank pics......so pretty.

That empty queue is crazy!!!

Gina - believe it's a regional/cultural thing? His people are very southern and proper, quite set in their wAys. He's definitely loosened up being around my boisterous crew lol.

He is coming around, actually suggested i snap a few shots that caught his fancy this trip.

Lol at mr keisha and the food pics! First year Tom was the same......he was like.....what the heck are you doing!! Soon he stopped me from eating if I forgot to take a pic first.........he's a quick learner.

Didn't realise USH was so different for horror nights, I watched a couple of the houses on YouTube and see what you mean about the low ceilings.......no queues is good though! I'm with you in appreciating the effort that goes in to them though......I always feel guilty if I don't like a house because I know how much effort goes into them.........

Can't wait for the rest Janet...........:thumbsup2

WOW! I've been to the Hollywood's park Horror Nights, and I hated going to them because they were so crowded (despite the mazes and scareactors being excellent), and haven't been in a few years. With the layout of the Hollywood park some nights I actually feared for my physical safety should something go wrong because we were that packed in. My husband and I agreed, we won't do this Universal's Halloween events anymore unless we can get the express pass options...in fact we thought about going this year, but couldn't find a date in our schedules where the express pass wasn't sold out!

Sounds like the locals are boycotting Universal's Haunt and going to Knott's Haunt this year instead. I did Knott's Scary Farm this year and it was the most crowded I've ever seen it.

Not to highjack your thread, but I'm actually doing a similar vacation to yours Keisha! My husband and I are going to Halloween events on both coasts this year. This is a bucket list trip of ours: we are doing Disney and Knott's in California, and on the east coast Universal Studios (Haunt and daytime tour!), Seaworld, and Mickey's Halloween party. (We wanted to do Universal Hollywood but couldn't get express passes for our dates and our vacation time isn't long enough to fit in Salem, Massachusetts). I'm totally looking forward to comparing trip notes with you when this is all done! (Maybe I should do my own trip report too).

Carole - this group has some great USH walk-throughs

Spacepest would you believe we met another couple from the Midwest who was doing the same sort of trip? No problem with any input, you should do a TR. Have found one's experience can vary vastly depending on how the approach an event, the day, weather, etc. Seriously, how cool is it to live in Salem!

ok, back to the 'dead' park lol

We were in the upper lot by 8:30 pm. Noticed that the escalators coming down were packed. Not sure if bulk of folks hit the upper lot & tram first or just a late 'after work' crowd.

Decided to head straight for the Purge Terror Tram, not being sure how long it'd take and wanting to see the show. There was a line they were stating was an hour, we used out passes and wound up being grouped into a tram with others who had the pass. A short drop off at bottom of hill and then things got crazy. Not sure why but the area was literally choked with people waiting to be funneled into the walkway. All the while TMs were yelling at people to move along, but there was nowhere to move. As Spacepest mentioned, it became rather claustrophobic and I was ready to bail. It seemed a long wait, especially with a scareactor attached to me:rolleyes:. It was fun for first few minutes but got old real quick having him bumping (being shoved by the crowd?) into be and screaming in my ear how I was going to meet my demise.

Finally, this started to move and we were herded (and I use the term loosely) past the bates motel & up the hill. If wearing any sort of sandals be prepared that the walkway felt to be constructed of some loose sand-type material, but not hard to walk in, just that my feet got filthy in a pair of mostly enclosed keens. Again up on the flat, the route got backed up. I am a pyscho - fan. Have done USH in the past. I was looking forward to getting our picture taken in front of Norman's house. Even I couldn't justify waiting in the line that was at least 50 yards. Good enough reason to return:rolleyes1

Once more than half the crowd was funneled off to the house, we were able to enjoy the trail. Interesting to see how they incorporated various standard sites.
246_zpsgrl9qdqc.jpg

247_zpsw3altx0b.jpg

not the best picture, but I smugly took it as DH was getting 'attacked'. The scareactor in front of me, promptly turned around, screamed no flashes or i'll kill you. I was good from then on lol.
242_zpshh8kxs2u.jpg

Our Purge experience was brief due to what I consider to be over-the-top wrangling by the staff. It could've been isolated due to the logger jam of people we encountered, regardless it was overall disappointing experience. My intent was to immediately hop back into line but by that time the line had tripled.

We were walking past the Jabberwockez show that was due to start in just a few minutes, and were surprised to be waived in by a TM. I enjoyed their act when they were competing on the tv show, but realized that we are not their target audience for this show. Those surrounding us in their early 20's seemed to enjoy it though.

We enjoyed The Halloween house and did a second walk thru as line was short. At this point it was nearing 11 pm & we called it a night. Surprisingly there was a heavy, steady crowd still rolling into the park at that point.

We'd do USH HHN again if in the area, but would make sure to hit the tram up to time it just when it turned dark versus the later time we selected.

Lol.........that picture of the mister getting a scare is excellent!!!

Thanks for the link.....will check it out later........I don't know what to make of their horror nights......is it a lot smaller an event?

Cool update though........:)
