Another high school shooting, this time in MD

Of course I want schools to be safe. You assume that the presence of armed guards makes a school safer. I believe otherwise. IMO, adding more guns is not the way to reduce gun violence.

Again, I can’t elaborate without getting into politics.

Not armed guards. Police officers. Big difference.

Do police not make our cities safer? Do we not have them at court houses and other government buildings to make them safer? I fail to understand how it wouldn’t make the schools safer.

When we want a place to be safe, we depend on police but we don’t want to do that with our kids. Makes no sense.

I don’t understand how safe schools=politics either.

The high profile politicians who appeared at the walk out protest last week must think that armed security makes them safer. Because they were there with armed security.

I bet the kids at that high school in Maryland were glad there was an armed security officer close by. No way to know how much worse it could have been otherwise.

I have no argument with individuals (regular people) that offer "thoughts and prayers. After all what action can they take. But I do find it just absurd when elected officials who can take effective actions can't muster the guts to do anything and try to get by with the "thoughts and prayers" bs.

So, if you want to do more, go here - https://event.marchforourlives.com/event/march-our-lives-events/search/ - and join in on Saturday. Yeap, marches! Maybe it will wake up enough of those chicken$#!+ politicians and get them to fear something other than the gun manufacturers and the lobbyists blocking everything.

I bet they were too!

I tell you, we have never had a shooter but we have had some very angry students on campus. I am very thankful for campus police. All I have to do is make a quick call and ask them to step in (can give them any reason, they realize we may not want to let the student know we are calling them) and I know that I am 100% safer than I would be without them.

What are you hoping they do? I want change. I want safe schools. That doesn’t mean I will agree with this particular march.

The lost me at “We cannot allow one more child to be shot at school. We cannot allow one more teacher to make a choice to jump in front of a firing assault rifle to save the lives of students and The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues.

What is their idea of a comprehensive and effective bill? I'd like to know that before I blindly jump on the current bandwagon.
Wonder if there will be cool knit hats for everyone :rolleyes1

I forgot about the march this Saturday. I guess it's good we decided to visit Madison a week later or we could have ended up stuck in traffic this Saturday.

Is your DD thinking about the UW-Madison? My DD is a freshman there. Next week will be very quiet since it's spring break. But yeah, traffic is going to be a bear Saturday morning. The march starts at the university and then goes down state street to the capitol. You can get around it if you go south around the capitol but if you take the usual route north of the capitol you'd get stuck for a while.

ETA: You would also be OK if you came down the Beltline to Park Street. The march starts at the far east side of the campus.

You honestly believe that someone who believes in the power of prayer is just trying to jump on the bandwagon but don’t believe the dozens choosing to insult those same believers are not?? Lol. Ok.

Do you understand how prayer works? Everyone that says it doesn’t have to immediately hit their knees. It can be a quick prayer in the moment, a muttering of “please give them comfort”, adding names to prayer lists, mentioning them at a prayer group—there are honestly dozens of ways to pray for someone or remember them in your prayers.
It’s not those who honestly believe in the power of prayer that I’m commenting on. It’s those that just say what they think is the thing to say. They’re are plenty who do exactly that.
Yep. I get how it works (or is supposed to work) & I am saying that I am doubtful that everyone who claims to do it does it.

Those that can and should have done something by now haven't.

If this group of kids can stir somethig up that would be a miracle.

I am hopeful this will get something started.
I think they have already. The sheriff and others in the press conference today from Maryland sounded ANGRY. I have never heard a press conference like that where law enforcement and politicians were angry. Sad, yes. Shocked, yes. But never angry like that.

What I am trying to tell you is they don’t have to “do” anything. It’s not necessarily a physical act.

Again, do you not think the flip side? That they say “prayers and thoughts aren’t helpful” just because it’s the thing to say?

I can never understand attitudes like this. Our country was started and founded on protests. Protesting is our given right as Americans, it is in our blood. Why do people dismiss protesting as if it's a waste of time? It is effective.

I can't find anything specific about what those who are marching are marching for. I'm dismissive of protests that do nothing more than trigger the sheeple.

I hope they do get something started and something changed. It’s what the “something” is that I am concerned about.

Too many are way too one sided. Sort of all or nothing either way. When the reality is the answer is most likely something in the middle.
