Solo: A Star Wars Story

We may go see a movie today with the rain and all but it won't be Solo. More likely to see IW for the 3rd time(I'd like to see Deadpool but my kids aren't watching it until they turn 21 atleast....). I've seen the various boycotts and their reasons but I have to say I am just not going because I have no interest in anything Star Wars coming out of LucasFilms as it is now. This is a sad statement but it is the truth. I look at Star Wars Merchandise when I am shopping and I roll my eyes and move on. Considering where my excitement level was on D

We are roughly 6 months from the last Star Wars film.

IW was about 2 months after Black Panther. I really don't think this is a case of fatigue. It is a case of Marvel making great movies and LucasFilms not making great movies. It is really that simple.

Along with burnout as stated well above, marketing hype to reach this borderline population could have helped.

You need to have lived the first trilogy and consumed Empire Strikes Back to have been an automatic for Solo. The Episodes 1/2/3 generation and the Episodes 7/8/9 generation are not automatics. They needed to be targeted.

Odd that TLJ theme was killing the past. Those of us that didn't like it were told to just give up and stop watching Star Wars movies after RoTJ. Seems like dumb marketing to release and movie with the intent of killing the past, only to come out with a movie SET. IN. THE. PAST.

I don't believe this has anything to do with a boycott. I also don't know what SJW is...

I agree, it is much worse for LucasFilms. While they might be getting hit a little from people Boycotting for various reasons, the real reason this is tanking is people have just lost interest. Some they lost at TFA, some they lost with Rogue One, most was lost with TLJ.

If Disney was smart they would begin the house clearing at LucasFilms immediately. They have 4 billion dollars invested in one of the biggest franchises in history and they have allowed the people in charge at LucasFilms to screw it up royally.

I forgot to mention one interesting/surprising thing from last night: People actually applauded at the end! I’m not so sure it deserved applause, but others apparently really enjoyed it and did.

I clapped when I saw
darth maul
. Felt awkward when I was the only one :rotfl2:

You would have fit in well in my theater - people went nuts during that part. The guy next to me was hyperventilating with excitement to the point I actually asked if he was ok

We had a lot of applause at various points in the movie .... granted when I went to see the Last Jedi there was also a lot of applause throughout and at the end. Though I live in the NY metro area where perhaps bespoke are more easy going and not cynical at all ;)

I think it comes down to the fact that seeing this movie was not a high priority for people - for various reasons: turned off by TLJ, burned out from 4 Star Wars movies in 30 months, turned off by the reported production problems, just not that interested in a Han background movie (I know I wasn’t) ... and when it is in the middle of other big superhero/adventure movies if you aren’t the top ptioroty you are nothing (to some extent) given the event driven society we are in.

Still question why they didn’t stick with a December relaese

Yeah that’s a good summary of it. I was incredibly cynical about the concept from day one, though the trailers did give me some hope. I can tell you that me and my friends had incredibly low standards going in

Since the reboot I:

Liked TFA somewhat.
Moved Rogue One into 2nd favorite after The Empire Strikes Back.
LOATHED TLJ and left the theater ranting LOUDLY. It's the only SW movie I don't own and never will as I'm pretending it didn't happen.
Really enjoyed Solo.

I'm not giving up. Franchises/IPs go through cycles and can improve.

I was the same - in fact, if my friend didn't suggest going to see it I very well might not have bothered to see it opening weekend (I am sure I would have seen it at some point) - but I just didn't really care about a Han movie (or at the very least there are a ton of other things I would have rather seen). And I am one who rather liked the Last Jedi so backlash to that didn't impact my desire for Solo

I guess my dad and I are suckers because we both enjoyed it, and the two of us and my sisters all loved The Last Jedi.

People are entitled to their opinions, but I don’t get why everyone is so overly critical. I think some people are getting way too invested and simply can’t enjoy a movie. It makes me sad.

And I'll add, the Solo movie is definitely ahead of The Phantom Menace and The Last Jedi for me.

It was a fun heist movie. It didn't pretend to be anything else and for that, I loved it.

Donald Glover...who I've loved since Community....was a standout.

Paul Bettany as a bad guy took some getting used to.

Alden did well. He did the BEST he could, IMO, with what was always going to be a thankless task.

That’s Star Wars. People are so invested in these movies it is part of their lives.

Yeah I also wasnt a fan of the concept and the production issues made me even more skeptical. I think you summed it up best by calling it a popcorn flick. It’s not citizen Kane by any stretch, but it’s a fun entertaining movie, which is honestly what the crux or star wars films has been since 77

last night I was flipping through channels and saw Episode IV coming on so I watched it ... sort of forgot how fun these movies can be when when there isn't so much hand wringing and debate and over-dissecting, and just enjoy it as a fun movie (unfortunately it turned out to be the "special edition" version which contains some really horrific CGI that doesn't not blend it well at all)

Pretty much all the factors were hit on here. Plus it was a very soft movie weekend overall. Deadpool had a surprisingly hard fall from last week dropping 65%. IW also came in lower than expected. Interested to see the Solo drop next weekend. I think some of the people that refused to see it might go next weekend after the word of mouth. The movie landscape is empty for the next couple of weeks until Fallen Kingdom.

That’s just it. People are so invested now that they go in with one thing in their head and if they don’t get it they are angry.

I don’t know if I would ever want Kathleen Kennedy’s job as she is criticized no matter what she does/Lucasfilm does.

Play it safe? No that’s bad to some.
Take risks? Nope still bad.

I didn’t grow up with the originals like many did so maybe that’s why I don’t have these films ingrained in my life but I do really like Star Wars. I don’t know there is any film where I have walked away literally angry because of what was done.

make me wonder what the reaction to Empire Strikes Back would have been if it came out today - and you know Jedi would be reviled with the unrealisticness of the Ewoks having an impact against the Empire and then judging if Anakin deserves to be saved and be a Force Ghost next to Obi-Wan and Yoda at the end (he killed tons of younglings, but in the end he saved his son, so he's cool, that makes up for alllll the bad things he did)

Yep, and I think social media is a big part of it. Had social media existed back then we might have seen a larger outcry/criticism.

Sorry it would probably always be bad to make a second movie in a Trilogy, give the reins to a different director from the first movie and allow that director a free hand to make any changes to the story arc even if it totally screws up the plot of movies before it. Also..... I think that was a run on sentence......

And originally they were to have three different directors for the three new movies. I can definitely be in agreement there that each director has a certain vision for a film or trilogy and have a different person do each movie can be a problem.
