Over 3,500 people quarantined on Diamond Princess cruise

The guy from twitter comes off as smug and delighting in others' misfortune. He says don't judge him for his choice to stay but he has posted some pretty judgmental things about the people that made the choice to leave...

Ok, this is a must-watch. Infectious Disease doctor boarded the Diamond Princess. "I've never been so scared in my life."

Thank you for sharing this video. I think many of us suspected things were a mess on there. In a sad way I kind of hoped that was the case, because otherwise it looked like it would spread to 100% of the people in the world. I think that, as the numbers kept rising instead of falling, the US gov't realized something was wrong, and as soon as they decided to go and get their citizens other countries did the same.

It's also very scary to know that they have been keeping them on there and spreading it to all of them. I saw David's news last night and my heart sank.

Hopefully they are at a safe distance.
It's the going back and forth that's the problem. People transferring food are virus vectors. But for sure, this is much better for the passengers.

That's why they really need an ID specialist on-site. They can see problems where other people, even other doctors can't see it.

I think you're exactly right about all of that.
I'm definitely not as worried about airborne transmission as I was. There's no infectious disease protocol on that ship. No wonder it was spreading.

That guy on Twitter comes off as an AH with some of his tweets.

Anyway, I would have gotten off that ship and went back to the states because obviously they don’t know what there doing over there and I trust the American Doctors much more to take care of them than the ones out there.
Yes, as I said, I'd have gotten off that plan at Travis AFB and kissed the tarmac! I think the Japanese doctors are very good, but it's their public health care system that isn't. Like the doc said in the video, they don't have a CDC. No one around to call the shots. Our CDC sometimes has the force of law behind it, which they rarely employ. If passengers need to go to the hospital, though, they'll be well tended-to.

If this is true, then there ya go. Reprehensible conduct, not a third world nation, a first world country.

Even NIH was saying that the ship quarantine should have worked fine. The problem might have been to many variables, etc, etc. Turns out, the problem was bureaucrats and politicians running a quarantine who aren't medical people. Awesome.

are you talking about the guy who chose to stay?

He and his wife are still negative for the virus, no symptoms, expecting to get off the ship tomorrow per the Japanese government and have been in their luxurious suite with food service that looks a lot better than that poor diabetic lactose intolerant guy from the UK who is begging their government to come get them who appears to be in an inside room. he looks like he is living on cornflakes while the suite guy is eating eggs and sausage and fresh fruit etc... I'm not sure if it's the difference in category or what but there definitely seems to be different conditions for different classes of passenger rooms.

He is basically betting on staying virus free, being done with this in a couple of days and having his chances being higher of contracting the virus being forced to mix with americans who have already tested positive - which is what ended up happening - there were 14 people who tested positive on the same plane as those who hadn't yet tested positive. He basically decided to take his chances finishing out the quarantine on the ship (such as it is) in comfort and luxury and being released, able to take a first class commercial flight home and live his life vs. being put on a military transport and kept in a NEW quarantine for another 14 days.

Time will tell whether he made the right decision - he could still test positive. Japan has said they will let everyone go who is negative after 14 days and that is tomorrow but they could change their mind. He could get a commercial flight to the US and then be put in quarantine at that point by the US, 3 days later than he would have if he evacuated. This is all really a "your guess is as good as mine" as to what will happen but I can see why he made the decision he did and he also has acknowledged that people who are in crappy inside rooms or already testing positive definitely had much more reason to take the evac option. I am really curious how it ends up for him and am hoping for a best case scenario (as I would for everyone) as I have no skin in this game or desire to prove a point about his decisions being wrong. People seem to think they know how this is going to end up but I don't!

I think that if he sounds like he is being a jerk it's because people are attacking him for making the decision he did because... the internet. I'm sure there are people who are rooting for him to get the virus, be proven wrong, stop being so smug etcetc. I wish him nothing but the best and hope his decision turns out right - doesn't mean it was the right decision for anyone else and I hope everyone who chose to evacuate also ends up having made the right decision.

Thing is I don’t trust the Japanese government. They can be negative right now but They still need to leave that ship and come back home to the US. He can catch it attempting to leave that ship and everywhere else between there and the US.

And based on that video posted, I don’t trust a damn thing they are saying over here. I truly hope they stay quarantined for another two weeks when they arrive to be absolutely sure. Our safety is just as important as theirs

He just comes off as very smug. It’s whatever. Hope they come back OK

Smug is such a nice word for him. You're a nice person. I am not. :smokin:

It's pretty clear that the virus is currently spreading on the ship. Which means the quarantine was a complete failure. Doesn't this mean that everyone who gets off the ship, whether they test positive or negative, still needs to go into an actual quarantine?

Oh, and David, the UK guy, had a nice large room with a balcony. He posted lots of videos and kept saying how they couldn't complain about the space when so many were stuck inside with no sunlight or fresh air. Also, they were bringing them food, but he needs to watch what he eats and specifically asked them to bring him the cornflakes. I've been following along since his first video.

They absolutely should! I know that all of the evacuated US people are. I don't see any country in their right mind, introducing people from the ship without first putting them in a 2-week quarantine. At this point there is absolutely no way to tell when an individual might have picked it up, as the evidence indicates it was spreading all over the ship.

I have a scenario that I am going to post because there seem to be some people here who are quite knowledgeable about infectious disease. My Dad is in southern Vietnam right now and flies home in a few days through Japan. I have been checking numbers coming out of Vietnam, and there seems to be very little near Ho Chi Minh. Flying through the airport in Japan in a couple of days is where my ever so slight concern comes in. He usually stops by our house on his way home from the airport. My DD is also getting baptized this Sunday and we were planning on him being there. I know that I am being way overly cautious to consider not seeing him in the next few days, but we leave on March 5 for the WBPC cruise. I just do not want to take ANY chance of creating another cruise ship situation. What do you think?

Can you give us the exact dates of all of these events, especially when he departs Vietnam?

It’s really hard to interpret tone and emotion on social media sites. I’ve read through his tweets, and I see nothing wrong with them. There was one post he could have worded better. He’s confident in the decision he made as he should be. Only time will tell if it was the right one.

He’s taking a beating from those that disagree with him. I guess that’s to be expected on Twitter. It’s why I don’t have a twitter account.

That's what the mute button is for. :)

I have learned a lot from twitter, it's where the scientists are posting pre-published manuscripts, and experts are weighing in them. There's no place else to get the info out so fast, even if the data is raw and perhaps flawed. Those things will correct themselves in time.

However, I wouldn't advise it for people who can't or don't want to wade through the trash. I would HIGHLY advise that nonscientists stay out of there. There's so much misinformation and disinformation, unless you can sift it out it's a scary place right now.

I like CIDRAP for people who have an interest and some science background: http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/infectious-disease-topics/covid-19

and the CDC for everyone: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html

The regular media reporting on this topic has been absolutely atrocious, I must say.
