In that vein, I was talking the other day to some friends near Tampa. They are in their late seventies and throughout the many years we have been friends they have always had concealed weapon permits. Whenever we went out with them, whether it was just for dinner or even walking through one of the state parks they both discreetly carried hand guns.
Chatting the other day about how they were managing in the pandemic we learned that they now also have a shotgun that they keep loaded at all times. They are concerned about home invasions and their perception that the current drift towards lawlessness will accelerate.
Very sad, especially for a couple like this who are very active in helping young men coming out of prison find jobs and accomodation and are far from naive.

I really don't know. You see, I was simply replying to the post that said, most americans are watching. And again, over 99.5% arent. Was just trying to clear up some misinformation.

Black lives seem to be more expendable then others as this point in time and in need of attention, so we apparently have forgotten that blacks skinned people are human beings and no longer personal property with no feelings, emotions, dreams or ability to love. I am so sad about Chicago's Magnificent Mile on Michigan Ave.
FWIW - my daughter's transplant hospital is a block away. It's our 2nd home.
This is the 2nd time this summer for looting and rioting near her hospital; we're probably going to start looking for a new one. The last time, when we drove by the businesses, it was so sad. So freaking sad to see such a glorious city concealed under plywood.
We live a few hours away.
My husband has been injured by rioters in his job.
I know that's not what the OP intended by this post - but I am just so sad. What does looting the Portillos or the Walgreens or the Best Buy or the Coach store or the Tesla store or the Nordstrom or Pottery Barn do? Gunfire was even exchanged throughout (according to the Tribune). I'm sad. I'm angry.

This wasn't an organized protest. It was result of anger over supposed misinformation spread about a police-involved shooting in Engelwood and then it just turned into a giant summer looting event.

A number of factors - anger, frustration, the lockdown, job loss, boredom. And with Chicago Public Schools not opening, it's only going to get worse. Many children/teens will not have the means or supervision to go to school remotely. No easy answer for the school situation.
There is no one group to point fingers at and place blame. Everyone is at fault. Chicago is a mess and all sides need to come together to try and fix this.

Very sad all around. Questioning if we still want to live here.

Thanks - I guess that I didn't realize that about the school situation. It's so different just to the west of you. I worry about the babies, the abused, the neglected that used school to escape their home life. I sit on a local board for abused children that are in the system. In my gut I feel that kids are being missed or forgotten.
