BLM teaches kids racism

Anyone who blames BLM protesters or organizers for that is being intentionally obtuse. It is clear that the violence is driven by forces outside the BLM movement, with entirely different agendas.
Again, if you join me and 100 other Disboard members to the bank to protest against financial inequality and someone pulls out a gun and robs the bank and you don't separate yourself from that person, you are no longer a protester, you are now a bank robber.

I don't think the moment has passed. Have you been watching the NBA games? All of the players are wearing Black Lives Matter shirts, and the announcers talk about their advocacy for specific causes. That's just one of the many ways that the "moment" is still moving. May not be the headline for all of the papers right now, but it's been covered very well by TNT and ESPN.
People are not watching the NBA games because of this. If I want to watch an NBA game, then I want to watch an NBA game. If I want to watch a NFL game, I want to watch an NFL game. I don't want to be watching furthering the division of the country. The NBA and NFL want to contribute to the division, therefore no, I have not been watching the NBA. I watched the NHL the other night instead, where they stood around center circle holding hands during the National Anthems.

So yes, because of the violence, crimes, murders, and burnings, the moment has passed. It only took til night fall the first day for that to happen.

Maybe like a very small population isn't watching NBA games because of that. But they clearly aren't true basketball fans. Also, pro-tip... you can watch a game and just turn the sound off if you really hate what the announcers are saying.

And I don't know how saying Black Lives Matter is dividing the country. It sounds like your views may align with Grandma's in the shared article.

You just don't get it -- or don't want to get it.

I NEVER said it's their fault.

I am also NOT distracted. I am the one who is trying to redirect the focus back to the real issues.

But we can't just pretend the violence doesn't matter when innocent 8 year-old girls are being murdered by people who claim to be affiliated with BLM, or "the movement," or whatever they call it.

Where was the outrage over Secoriea Turner's murder? There was none. Why not?

And again...what is the news media talking about?

"If it bleeds, it leads," so the news is talking about shootings in Chicago, and shootings in NYC, riots in Portland, bomb blasts in Beirut, political silliness in Washington...everything but the agenda BLM wants talked about.

The violence distracted the media, and the moment has passed.

The only people distracted are those that rely on the media to let them know what is going on outside of their bubbles. Usually, they are the ones that want to pretend that there isn't a need for a BLM movement.

Those of us living, and working in those communities have not been distracted. Those outside the community that are doing what they can to fight (figuratively) for change haven't been distracted either.

Folks who actually invested in this, care and want to see things change won't be distracted.

Your people are not watching. Most Americans are.

I was in the army in the mid 60s. It was for the first time whites and blacks lived together. Our drill instructor made good point. He brought a White and black man to the front of the formation. He said "the difference of these two is one has white skin and the other has black skin but they have one thing in common. They both have red blood."

Well, I wouldn't say most Amercans are. I would say 1.3 million per game give or take of 300 million Americans. or .5 %. so that's like saying 99.5% aren't? Is that math right? And they are competing against almost nothing but reruns. And we haven't had live sports in months. Shoot the NHL is getting a million viewers. So I expected the NBA to be much better than that.

How many watched a regular NBA game before Covid?

But now demands are being made for segregated college dorms and segregated graduation
https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/05/american-colleges-segregated-housing-graduation-ceremonies/

Did you read the article you posted? It states in the article that this is a trend that has been occurring since 1969. I wonder what's going on on those campuses to make the students feel that this is a viable solution.

I also wonder how many of those students considered HBCUs when they were deciding on colleges.

One part that surprised me was the desire to get rid of the traditional family model in favor of a more communal model. I think that idea is very much out of step with much of the Black community. Family has always been one of the cores of Black community life, and they want to do away with much of that tradition.

The other thing that surprised me was the strong emphasis on gender equality. It felt like they were as much interested in that cause as they were in progress for Black people. In fact, they mention gender equality 4-5 times very specifically and don't mention either the criminal justice system or employment equality or economic progress at all.

That is out of step with broad segments of the Black community, especially the very important religious community. I personally prefer to judge each person as the individual they are -- but much of the Black community has very strong opinions on this subject.

Nothing in their "What We Believe" piece "concerns" me, LOL. It's not my place to tell them what to believe! I'm certainly not offended by any of it; in fact, I agree with much of it.

But I do think they are more committed to some very narrow objectives which are not reflective of the majority of the Black community.

I did see that and do personally think helping or encouraging families stay together, having both parents raise kids, which is shown to help children is important and wish they would talk more about it, but I think communal raising of children is also a good thing and an interesting idea. I LOVE that they are for gender equality, should be part of the message. And all equality. Women are the bread winners in many or even majority of black families and helping women and their children, including talking about inequality in pay for women and inequality all around with women, not just blacks will do MUCH to help. People on both sides seem to focus on one thing or the other and this is a complex issue with many things going on, it is not just black or white no pun intended lol. I do support BLM, I feel sad that the focus is on violence bc I think that is a red herring, it happens but not even sure many are BLM that are doing it. Just bc there are a handful of bad and is focused on by the media and for political reasons, doesn't mean BLM is a bad thing, it is a good thing. But I also get discouraged with liberals who I think sometimes will not talk about things that need to be talked about out of political correctness. Maybe why I consider myself more of an independent that leans left lol, such as how important it is to have two parents or at least a good support network for children. Women get paid less, black women the least, what can be done about this. Having access to childcare, birth control, women's health, good food and water for their children etc., etc.
Yes we have racism in Many things particularly our criminal justice system, also factor in the high cost of living, all these things need to be addressed also and hurt POC the worst that start out with strikes against them. I think many feel defeated even if two parents stay together if the cost of living is so high and pay low. All these things need to be talked about and addressed.

I beg to differ. Nobody is saying black lives do not matter. To the contrary, there are many of us that believe everybody's lives matter. But you take it as an insult if we say all lives matter. We must conform and say black lives matter or else.

No haha response from me. The "protesters" still come out every night in Portland and then when the crowd gets unruly like trying to barricade exit doors to a police precinct and then set it on fire with occupants inside (this happened last night though you probably won't hear about it on CNN or MSNBC) the police have to respond. Then you hear complaints that the police are tear gassing "peaceful protesters" along with the troublemakers. Tell me this, how do the authorities respond to the antagonists and not the protesters when they are all in the same crowd, wearing the same clothes (except those that are wearing markers falsely deeming themselves "Press" which you also are probably not hearing on CNN and MSNBC).

Well said. Unfortunately, we have to leave it here.
