Will you get the Covid vaccine?

I got my first dose of the Moderna vaccine yesterday afternoon. Just some arm soreness today, not as bad as I remember from the flu shot (but I made a ton of effort to move my arm around yesterday).

Appointment #2 is mid-February. I feel very thankful and lucky.

I completely understand the perspective of someone who is hesitant to get the vaccine due to lack of knowledge about long-term side effects. That's a legitimate concern.

That said, getting Covid also carries risks and I can't wait to get the vaccine. I'm a middle-aged in-person teacher with 21 students in my class seated 3 feet apart, and our school had 2 diagnosed Covid cases just this past week, and two of my students are in quarantine (not diagnosed). So I'm very concerned about getting sick, and I can't get vaccinated yet as teachers currently have no priority in my state. I think the risk profile of this vaccine is low, and I've seen the ingredient list and am very pleased by the lack of nasty preservatives.

I'm relieved that my elderly mother got her first dose of the vaccine today. She's a veteran former nurse and the VA called her in to get vaccinated. My son is 16 and I'm looking into entering him into the Moderna teen trial- there is a site for that only an hour from us. 67% of the participants get the vaccine, so that's a much better chance of him getting it soon than the 0% chance he has otherwise. And adult study participants from fall trials are already being "unblinded" & given the chance to be vaccinated soon if they got the placebo, so I think it's likely the same thing would happen for my son if he were to participate.

I'm in Michigan too and work in a middle school. I just heard yesterday that they are going to start immunizing us on Fridays starting next Friday. I'm trying to get appointments for my parents who are in their 80's through the health dept. Don't seem to be getting a whole lot of vaccine here though. It reminds me of trying to get a boarding pass for ROTR. Although I seem to have better luck with that.

i heard that Meijers is going to vaccinate.
Also, do you have any St. Joe's or Providence hospitals near you?
You might be able to get appointments for your parents there.

We got our second doses this week. I didn't have any side effects but DH did. He had a fever and body aches and slept the whole day. Thankfully he was better by the following morning.

Not sure if I will do CCC or wait until the Moorestown mall opens (mega location). We are working from home so the mall would be closer.

Moorestown Mall is open now. I just booked appointments for my aunt and me on the same day, April 11th, only fifteen minutes apart. Much more convenient for us and closer to our home. I cancelled my appointment at CCC.

While I am happy that progress seems to be happening very quickly, I have to say that I am unsure whether or not I am willing to get this vaccine. Experts are saying it will be safe, but how do they really know? There could possibly be long term effects that no one is even aware of right now. This alone has me leaning towards not getting it for a good long time.

‘Thoughts?
I feel the way you do. However, the virus is getting so bad that taking the vaccine may be the only way to stay safe. I’ve decided to go ahead and take it. I also want to travel again.

then your husband has a "younger" immune system than you do.
Those who are younger, have stronger responses to the vaccine.
Those of us who are older, tend to have milder responses to the vaccine as a result of an aging immune system.

he should be happy with his strong response. It means both his immune system is functioning and that it has reacted to the vaccine.
.

they died because they were about to die, not from a strong reaction to the vaccine.
they vaccinated everyone old, including those who were expected to die within the next week or two.
They didn't die from the vaccine. And they didn't have a strong immune response to the vaccine.
.
I guess you're in Norway or have some kind of connection?
Common reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, “may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency, said in a Friday statement.

DS18 just started working at Amazon and is now in possession of a letter that states he is an essential worker. So he just jetted up our state’s category list from group 4 to group 1b. As Colorado is still administering to group 1a, he doesn’t know if vaccines will be available on site at the warehouse or not. He’s assuming because he was given the letter that he’s on his own to go wait in line somewhere once group 1b is opened up. I’m glad for him, as he is now our household’s biggest exposure risk. DH is group 2 due to diabetes, I am group 4 due to just being regular, and DS14 is too young according to the guidance. My parents have already gotten their first dose and are scheduled for their second later this month. They are in a continuing care place in Texas and a paper appeared under their door soon after the new year giving them their date and time to get the shot. Their facility contracted with Walgreen’s and they just had to walk across campus to their appointment. Couldn’t have been easier. I joked with them that their privilege is showing, after seeing the seniors waiting in lines overnight in Florida.

I’m glad to hear of our frontline workers that are receiving the vaccine first. It’s going to take a while, but things are definitely looking up for 2021 as the rollout continues.

Just having a note from an employer stating that one is an essential worker is enough proof? I'm surprised they don't require more than that.

it's a generic statement.
They do not say that specifically in those cases whether they had adverse reactions or whether the reactions killed them.
Only that it's possible that people who were in that frail condition might die from vomiting or nausea.
But in any case, they were going to die very soon one way or another.
We've actually had far more than that and have investigated every single one.
In all cases, those who died were already on deaths doorstep.
Whether the vaccine played a part in the deaths of those whose death was imminent isn't relevant when you're vaccinating millions.

If they were going to die very soon anyway (1-2 weeks) why give them the vaccine? Sounds like wasted vaccines to me. Or are they experimenting on the elderly?
they are elderly living in nursing homes ("long term homes").
Because of the rapid spread of covid 19, when a nursing home is vaccinated, you go for across the board vaccination or you may as well not vaccinate at all.
So no, it's not wasted vaccine.

From what I read they they weren't being as choosy before. I mean everyone wants elderly to get vaccinated especially in these congregate LTC settings and there are definitely people on the Boards who would balk at the very idea of "let 'em skip on the vaccine for now" because of their life expectancy and overall health. Norway did say they want to be more selective for the very frail and do individual assessments prior to clearing them. If that is done here you can bet some of the posters who have frail loved ones will be very very upset.

Since our gov in New York botched it so bad will never see it. I would be in the 1A category and heard immunity will kick in.

Thank you! Moorestown Mall is closer for us, too. I believe it is being run by Virtua and have been told by someone in senior management that it is a nightmare. As they were getting set, Murphy opened up the grouping of people eligible and people wanting the vaccine has exploded.

Got my 1st shot this morning at a really large drive-in location in our metro area. You didn't even have to get out of your car. The whole operation is run like a well oiled machine. Seriously, it's really well done. Got my vaccine card with my follow up appointment in 3 weeks for shot #2. Had to drive 45 min from home for the vaccine, but it was totally worth it.
Were you at the State Farm Stadium location?

I'll be at GCGG in a couple weeks and based on everything I've read, I was lucky to get that appointment... a bit worried about availability for the 2nd one tho.

My parents are supposedly eligible Tuesday but with as much trouble as I had with my own, I am worried for them.
