Last time you rode a bus (when not on vacation) or school

In the summer we take the bus downtown to games or just to go down there. We have good public transportation here and it's cheaper and easier than trying to find parking. Buses here run often and it's only about a 15 minute ride, plus the bus stop is at the end of my street. I love living in an urban area. I've always enjoyed public transportation when it's accessible.

Our small business rents up a big tour style bus and invites employees, their friends and family as Well as the local American legion post and our therapeutic vet center to drive is 179 miles to be part of the welcoming committee for veterans we coming back home from their Honor Flight. Snacks on the bus and then a catered dinner at the bus when we get there. Then we cheer them on and shake their hands when the arrive back home

Earlier today. I took the bus to go to Target. I used to take it every day, but then I moved next to a light rail station and switched to trains for most purposes.

Well, it was shuttle from NJ to NYC on vacation. Previous to that would have been Disney shuttles on vacation. Before that 10th grade which was school, before I got my license so I could drive to school.

Thus, my answer is never.

I have ridden in a taxi twice. That was for work in Detroit from the hotel to the arena to watch a hockey game, then I think we walked to a casino, and another taxi back to the hotel.

On one now headed to work.

The route I ride is lightly loaded. I always get an entire row to myself morning and afternoon.

It has worked out better then I expected. Because the bus can ride in the paid HOT lane it ends up only taking 15 minutes or so longer door to door versus driving in the morning and 30 minutes longer in the afternoon

If I could ride in the HOT lane for free I would drive but until I buy an EV or PHEV (they can ride in the HOT lane for free) I can’t justify the $40 a day it would cost round trip.

We didn’t have school buses, and I never used one for commuting to work, so most bus rides were vacation related, or semi-vacation related (taking one into or within a city on a day trip). The only other times I can recall was as a young teenager, occasionally taking a bus to the big local shopping mall. I am trying to remember if way back then the buses had stone wheels like on the Flintstones.

20 years ago, on an outing to a regionally famous restaurant with a group of people. Prior to that, maybe once or twice as a kid. Otherwise it's been only Disney buses and airport shuttle buses.

About 15-16 years ago DS was going to start taking a local bus from his school to the place where DW worked. So to make sure he was comfortable with it, I rode with him the first time he did it.

Other than that, the only time I rode a bus was for school or vacation.

I took the city bus all over until my 2nd semester in college. Haven't taken one since.

My wife takes the bus every day from our place out in the 'burbs, downtown to her office. A 5 minute drive to the bus station + 25 minute bus ride sure beats a 50+ minute commute in traffic (the busses here can drive on the freeway shoulder). Plus there is free wifi on the bus, and airplane like tray tables for putting your laptop on, so she can actually get work, etc.. done during the commute.

I didn't ask her about the bus seat reclining etiquette though :scared: .

how muct time do loose by catching a bus, instead of a car. I think a bus woud be ralxing its just the extra time, waiting for and even after work, how long you got to wait before the bus even comes
My husband took the bus to work for 15 years, my son had an internship in the city this summer. The buses are very frequent during rush hour, but they might not get seats. There is usually a line at port authority coming back, but there is always a bus waiting. It’s faster taking the bus because there are bus lanes.

Around here, (at least for the 'burbs to city and back commute) during rush hour, you save a considerable amount of time by riding the bus. Door-to-door it takes my wife ~35 minutes or so by driving to the park-and-ride and taking the bus, but it takes 50-75 minutes driving. The busses here have special lanes to use, including the shoulder on the freeway, so it saves quite a bit of time during the peak traffic times.

(I still prefer my 0-minute commute to the home office. Then again, I do have to cross the dreaded lego minefield, and if I step on one, it can ruin my day.. so it does have its disadvantages)

It's wasn't a vacation perse (we didn't really consider it a vacation) just a quick 2 day/1 night jaunt several hours east of me to attend a festival.

We parked in a school parking lot and took a school bus operating as a shuttle to the edge of the festival area as parking was very limited near the festival area. That was 1 1/2 years ago IIRC.

In our suburbs you'd almost assuredly lose time taking the bus because while there is a bus system that goes into the suburbs the routes are limited, you have to drive to the parking lots for your car, the drop off points often mean still walking (office parks and the like), and the timing of the bus routes.

The buses here can only use the shoulder on one highway (the shoulder was turned into a pseudo bus lane a few years ago) only when traffic is going 35mph or less IIRC.

You'd probably only use the bus here in the 'burbs (around the suburbs and if commuting to Downtown) if you didn't have a car, didn't have enough cars, or were really worried about car maintainence and cost of insurance vs using it as a time savings measure. So I guess traffic sucks but it doesn't suck enough lol.

Thinking about it a bit more, we are actually quite lucky for a few reasons:
  1. The park-and-ride is right next to the on-ramp that she would take to work anyway. So that part of the commute isn't any extra for her.
  2. The bus she gets on is an express bus, to downtown. It picks up at 2 other Park-and-rides, but they are before hers, so no stops after she is picked up. (And she said the bus is practically empty when it picks her up, so obviously those other park-and-rides aren't used much).
  3. The downtown depot/stop is next door to her office.
So in her situation, there is very little overhead to take the bus. And bringing up cost, that is another factor. A bus pass for her (through a deal at work) is $40/mo, whereas parking in the garage would be $85/mo, so there is a nice savings there. (Parking at the park-and-ride garage is free). I guess we hit the golden ticket on this one.

It was probably December 2018. I was in a parade and the only way to get to the starting point from where I could park my car was to take a bus.
