Restroom work in Club/Lab Disney Magic

We’re enhancing our restroom facilities in the Disney’s Oceaneer Lab and Disney’s Oceaneer Club. We will be refurbishing one restroom at a time, and children will have access to the alternate bathroom within the Youth Activities spaces. Certain areas within the Youth Activities space may also be unavailable while the work is completed.

Our Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are connected, allowing children the ability to move between the two spaces at times throughout the day to enjoy the various activities and offerings in both areas. Specially trained Youth Activities counselors will be on hand to direct or escort your clients’ child between the two spaces, as needed.

Kids of all ages can experience the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab during Open House hours. During all other operating hours, children must meet the age requirement (3 to 10 years of age) and be fully toilet-trained to check in to Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab. Children who do not meet requirements may visit and participate during the Youth Activities Open House times.

We appreciate your clients sailing with us and look forward to providing them and their family with an enjoyable cruise.

This was the email we received….nothing about the nursery and very misleading about the kids club!!!
I would be livid. We sail on the Magic on 2/16 and I wonder if the work will be done or at least more complete by then so that we aren’t losing out on half of the kids space. It is completely unacceptable that they didn’t mention the nursery impact - even if it was something that was learned last minute the least they could do is communicate to those who have nursery age kids.

Like I said this was only one of many things that were not handled properly; and I’m not talking about the weather, that is the only thing they handled well. On the last night after dinner our 14 month old grandson started running a fever and it got to 103 even after giving Motrin. You have to go through guest services to get a doctor at the health center and we couldn’t get through the phone lines and the line to guest services was soooo long. My point is that many many people were complaining and not getting any answers at all. I will be emailing and calling because with a sick baby we didn’t have time to complain in person.

On the Magic cruise that just ended, the Club Side (Toy Story stuff, younger kid side) was closed the whole time. No open house time at all (I think). Some passengers got vague email ahead of time. Our family got no notice. Very disappointing since there was a 5YO and a 6YO and the Lab side didn't appeal to them.

This does look to be planned refurbishment and not the result of a toilet explosion, as they are doing each bathroom one at a time and they aren't all out of service.

On our down under cruise only one side of the kids club/lab was open at a time. Usually the lab was open with the club closed off for open houses (this seems to be something specific to these cruises though). So I wouldn't worry about only one side being available at a time, kids still make the most of it.

That may have been due to fewer children on the cruise or fewer counselors. I’ve been on several Disney cruises and both sides of the kids area are typically open except for a couple of hours of open house during the daytime hours. But for this restroom work they are completely closing off one side and it isn’t available for open house and people are concerned as some sailings are completely sold out so there will be lots of kids; Disney is giving out different info as to which sailings are impacted which is confusing (probably due to unknown nature of construction delays though).

The problem is that the side that appeals most to some kids, especially younger ones, was completely closed the whole cruise. It’s what everyone thinks of when they think about the kids area—Toy Story room, Marvel Academy, Pixie Hollow). This is why people with young kids choose to pay more for DCL. They don’t pay that much extra for a room with a craft studio and coloring pages.

The Aus/NZ cruises are fully booked out with max children. It's more to do with how kiwis and aussies have been using the club on these shorter cruises (most are 2-4 nights with a few 5 and a couple of 6 nighters). Parents have wanted to do more open houses with their kids.

Regardless of the usage of the clubs on Aus/Nz cruises, the difference here is that half or a portion of the Magic kids area is entirely closed and passengers on upcoming sailings received an email that this was due to restroom work. Not one half open for parents to enjoy with their kids as part of an open house while the other half is open as a kids club normally, but one half closed entirely meaning that 1) open house playtime isn’t available for families, and 2) all kids who want or need to be in the kids area have to be in one side only, so less activities and space available. I don’t think it is a comparable situation to having one half open for open house.

I still wouldn't let it ruin my trip.

There are plenty of other things to be doing.

That’s your opinion. Others may disagree or feel they are paying for something not being provided.
I understand your disappointment. But it sounds like work that has to be done. Just like a school or daycare, a cruise ship cannot go indefinitely without working toilets in a kids' area; but unlike a school or daycare there are no "unoccupied" days to get the work done while kids are elsewhere. Would you rather they shut down the Club/Lab entirely? That's another option - and I believe they did it a couple of times on post-covid cruises when there wasn't adequate staff. It would be overkill to cancel the cruise entirely just to get the work done.

I'd try to see the best -- that there is still secured programming for kids 3-10. You have the option to have your children supervised so you can do whatever adult activities you had planned. And a DCL cruise has lots of activities onboard for all ages.

For the doctor, could someone have gone down to the health center? I just walked down there, but I just needed burn cream. Maybe I wasn't supposed to, but I did, and they were pretty helpful. Not sure if that was feasible in your situation to have one person leave. Hope your grandson feels better now.

It was after hours and no one was there. Guest services had to get a nurse to open for us and we had to wait a few minutes for the doctor to arrive. It’s $180 if it’s during open hours and $380 if it’s after hours.

Wow, that's good to know.

As far as we’ve been told when the work teams come in they can’t be in the same space with the kids and they have to access the piping in the walls. Random stuff getting flushed actually happens more often than you think and they come in at night to fix whatever got thrown down the loo which is a lot of underwear for some reason. No word on how long this will be until turnaround day when they can open it all up while guests disembark
@CMontheseas any chance you could provide an update on the kids club/lab work? From what I can piece together there was one Magic sailing where the club was basically closed the whole cruise, and then the most recent sailing the club was open periodically but no open house other than the first day. I called and emailed DCL and have been told different things by different people; one said the work was only impacting sailings through the Feb 3 sailing and another said it would impact thru Feb 21 sailings with no guarantee that both sides (club and lab) would be open.
I am trying to stay positive here but some concrete info would be good for planning purposes!

Sorry I was transferred from the Magic! We heard that once they started opening it up to address one issue, more popped up like hercules and the hydra

I have heard that it is not yet complete
Yea, that was report from the most recent sailing. At least they said the club area was open some and not totally closed like it was for an earlier sailing. I just don’t know if I should expect something like the lab being entirely closed when they shift over to work on that restroom or something similar that would be pretty negative impact IMO. People on the cruise where the club was entirely closed said the lines were extremely long for pickup and dropoff and that the lab was really crowded.

That’s why I think it was a bad idea to do more extensive renovation than actually required to fix the issue. But maybe it really was an urgent issue that had to be fixed. In any case it really stinks that work going on for weeks/months and limiting access to kids areas is happening during guest sailings with very little communication.

Can anybody confirm that the work on the Magic is complete and the Oceaneers Club/Lab are back to normal operation?
