For fun, here's some numbers you all can check out. Note, I did this a few weeks ago because of the constant pounding on another forum how the US is the absolute worst of the world. We're number 1 is the common mantra of the media and those on a certain side of the line. I have it in Excel listing 181 countries/regions and just copied with sorting to show where the US really is. As I said, it's a lot of work to research stuff instead of just listening to MSM with an agenda telling you their analysis of numbers.

Remember, those numbers are about a month old now. The US has added almost 4 million more since then. India, a little over 1 million, with about 4 times the population. These kinds of numbers are reported in the "MSM".

It just doesn't make me feel a heck of a lot better to be doing slightly better than Chile, Armenia, Peru, Kuwait, Panama, Qatar, Israel, and Bahrain.

Well, Australia is clearly in a different stratosphere by virtue of measures that are not socially acceptable or even logistically possible in many other parts of the world. All other nations, Canada included, have seen cases and fatalities steadily increase since late September. And here in Canada we have had relatively prudent measures, including mandatory masking, in place since the summer in many locales with good compliance rates. It hasn’t been enough to stem a second tide that does not seem to be peaking.Yup. And I understand mrrodgers argument....we're not the worst in the world on a per capita basis on cases or deaths. But...look who is doing worse than we are....and take a moment to understand why their numbers are so poor.
Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar: The virus ran rampant among the migrant workers that they import for oil production and construction....and house them in very tight/unsanitary conditions.
Israel: They did well early on with a strict lockdown, and then their leader opened up everything all at once, very quickly, and infections soared.
Peru, Chile, Panama: massive inequality/poverty, corrupt governments, political and social unrest. Peru has had 3 presidents in the last week, so it's kind of tough to mount a response to really anything.
Armenia is literally fighting a war with Azerbaijan.
I'd think we'd want to compare our response to highly developed, wealthy and relatively stable nations....like Germany, Canada, Australia....etc.
What is Australia doing that is socially unacceptable?Well, Australia is clearly in a different stratosphere by virtue of measures that are not socially acceptable or even logistically possible in many other parts of the world. That might have been the wrong term, given some interpretations. What I meant is that full lock-down in the way Australia has done it would not be largely accepted by societies in North America and western Europe. Lack of "buy in" and voluntary compliance would necessitate levels of enforcement through sanctions that also would be generally unacceptable to many. What is Australia doing that is socially unacceptable?

What type of messaging do you think would have compelled Canadians to embrace the approach Australia took? And what leader here would have embraced the idea that zero cases was an achievable goal, at the expense of all other aspects of life and well-being?I'm not sure that this is true. A different leadership, and different messaging would have led to a different outcome. Words matter.

Canadians have generally followed the restrictions, except for the usual vocal minority that also exists in Australia and elsewhere. If the leadership goal was to tamp down the virus at an early stage, with a significant lockdown from mid March for a month, followed by a slow re-opening with aggressive contact tracing as was done in Australia, most Canadians would have accepted this.
You will never get 100% compliance, anywhere in the world.
My post related more to the south of the border.
Ha! Yes, you are absolutely correct. Words matter. From: A Resident South of Your Border.
Seriously though, we are so divided here. And not only is there a lack of civility....but there is just a level of disrespect that is repugnant. Our Governor here in NJ, was dining out with his family last weekend in my town. He's a local and is seen around here often. He was verbally accosted by at least two women. It went viral and I've seen Governor Murphy have to respond to questions about the incident. Gayle King asked him about it this morning. I won't like the video, because there's profanity in it.

It is very sad. I don't think there is anything inherently different between Americans, Canadians, Australians, any differences would be due to conditioning. Hopefully a uniter-in-chief will start the reconditioning to be more respectful and civil to one another.
I always say, the person your face off against today may be your neighbour tomorrow. Be civil at all times!
