I love credit cards so much!

Hi, all. I've been lurking on and off here and wanted to thank you for the great tips and motivation to make the most of CCs. :goodvibes And I also could use some advice on next moves and what to apply for, as I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options. Here's a run-down of our situation (trying to provide pertinent details, but sorry that this is so long):

*Trying to get as much of the airfare & hotels free as we can for vacation to France in (probably) May/June 2018 for hopefully 2 weeks. Also going to WDW in October 2017 and hoping to take a DCL Alaskan Cruise in Aug. 2018. We can only make all of these things happen in this time frame by getting significant chunks of travel costs free/cheap, especially focusing on France. :teacher:

*DH and I both have 800+ credit scores. I read about the 5/24 rule for Chase and he is fine at 3/24, but I'm at 5/24 until Nov 2017 (assuming my Discount Tire card counts, which I think it does). We generally run about $2k/month through our cards between the two of us. We have one DD, who is currently 4 and will travel with us.

*We both got the Hilton Surpass (AmEx) with the 100k bonus and completed that spend recently. I expect, between the two of us, that we can get at least 4 nights in France at Hilton properties from that. We also will each get a free night on our anniversary date (March), which I am thinking to use for hotel on the night before and after our cruise in Vancouver.

*We both got the Flexperks AmEx cards when they had large sign-up bonuses. Between us, we currently have about 86k Flexperks. 30k points will get up to $600 flights and 40k will get up to $800 flights. Our original goal was to get that up to 90k and get all 3 flights free if we could snag them at a low point of under $600. However, I'm growing doubtful that will happen and want to get airfare booked soon. I am still seeing a lot of options just under $800, so I'm thinking we use Flexperks for 2 free tickets and pay for the third.

*Thinking we will offset most cost of that 3rd ticket with savings from the Barclaycard Arrival Plus that DH just got approved for (that's his 3/24, by the way). Once it arrives, we are wanting to purchase our WDW airfare, so will put it on that card, along with regular expenses, to hit the $3k spend, then use the travel credit against that airfare. Should be over $500 in credit. I'd like to get this card too, but thinking I should wait until after I get a Chase product, due to the 5/24? But that puts me into 2018, if I can't get Chase until Nov/Dec. I'm thinking that timing would probably still be okay to purchase Vancouver airfare for the Aug 2018 cruise and get credit, though, so still good.

*I keep seeing the CSR raved about, but I cannot figure out why I should get that vs. a Chase Marriott Rewards card for my purposes? :confused3 I don't intend to keep the card long term, unless someone convinces me to (our long-term keepers are the US Bank Flexperks Visa cards we've had forever and gotten loads of free flights out of - oh, and the Delta AmEx for the free bags mostly). If I'm understanding right, the CSR would net us $600/each ($750 booking through UR - $450 annual fee + $300 travel credit). That would probably get us somewhere between 4-5 hotel nights in France. I'm seeing that a lot of people say the reward is better if you transfer to a partner, but that would only give me 50k or so points (per card) to transfer to Marriott, right? But if I did the Marriott card directly, the bonus is 80k points. That for both of us would also get us probably 5 nights from what I can see. The only notable plus I'm seeing to CSR is the Global Entry credit. DH & I both got that with our FP AmEx cards, but DD needs it for France. So long as I could use it to get hers, that would be useful - so maybe just one of us gets CSR?

Sorry for the novel, but if anybody has any pointers on any parts of this, I'd appreciate it. Am I on the right track? Am I missing something? How would you make these trips all happen? What cards would you get for us and in what order? (And if it's relevant, we have a free 6 night WDW resort stay for October, thanks to Guest Relations, and we have Annual Passes, so airfare and food are the only expenses. The DCL Alaska is mostly going to be cruise cost that we'll use discounted Disney gift cards to pay. France is really the wild card where nothing is pre-paid and hotel rewards are useful.)

I don't know anything about the Flexperks cards, so I can't be of help there. I have been working on the Chase products. I have the CSR (3x on dining and travel), Chase Freedom Unlimited (2.25% on everything when transferred to my CSR and used for travel expenses), and DH has the Chase Freedom (7.5% on rotating categories when transferred to my CSR and used for travel expenses). My next card will be the Chase Sapphire, for the sign up bonus, which I will eventually downgrade to a Freedom card. And I might have DH also get the Sapphire to later downgrade to the Freedom Unlimited (if I can convince him).

I think that most people really like the CSR because of the high earnings, but also because of how the Chase products work so well together for high earnings potential. I travel a decent amount for work and so the CSR earns me a lot of bonus rewards without having to spend my own money. It more than pays for itself after 2-3 work trips. The Freedom Unlimited is my newest card and is great for all of the non-category spend that I am doing regularly. And the Freedom is great because of the high earnings potential. Right now it is grocery stores, so our regular grocery spending is going on that card, plus I have been buying gift cards for things we would have spent on anyways to help cap the $1,500 for the quarter.

I have found the CSR really valuable for my travel expenses since I got the card last October. I have paid for roundtrip airfare to Denmark ($1200), a bus tour in Denmark, a hotel night in Madison, WI, and $800 towards a European cruise fare. My total value in bookings so far has been over $2500. I am currently saving back up again for an October 2018 cruise leaving out of Venice. My goal is to pay for airfare using CSR. This would bring our cruise cost to $1200 plus excursions, since I am covering hotel with SPG points.

Also, if you are focusing on Marriott Rewards for hotel stays, you could consider getting the SPG Amex card too. You can transfer the SPG points to Marriott to use towards hotel stays. I think the bonus is 25k points right now, which is roughly 83250 Marriott rewards points.

We have had a JC Penney store card for 24 years. We just got a letter it's being upgraded to the JC Penney MasterCard. Will that show up as a new account on our credit report? I see an opt out, but it's by phone and the card is in my husbands name as the main cardholder, and I am sure he is not real keen on calling.

I just finished the spend for the United (70k pnts). I had SW business and personal last month followed immediately by United. My plan and goal was to apply for CIP asap but I'm kind of exhausted with the grind right now. Hopefully the bonus will still be around in a couple of weeks and I will be ready to get at it again, lol.

I keep saying, "After this one we'll slow down for a while", but then I see how many points or miles I'm missing out on and I've got to go for JUST. ONE. MORE. ::yes::

I NEVER KNEW about the 5/24 rule! Hating that I signed up for stupid cc's at retail stores just to get the stupid 15% of that purchase! Sigh. Now I'm not sure if I'll get approved for the SW 60k promo! drat!

Yes, this will count as a new account on your credit report and count towards the 5/24. If it were me, I would opt out.

Ugh! Can you trust what Cust Serv Reps tell you on the phone?

I just called Chase SW (the one that's in DH's name) to ask if I'm an AU on his card bc I'd read this:
"Chase will count cards that you are an authorized user on in the 5 card limit. (For example, if you applied for 4 cards in the last 24 months and your spouse applied for 1 card but added you as an authorized user, Chase will count that as 5 cards.) You might be able to convince a phone representative to not count those cards."

So the rep tells me that Chase doesn't count toward the 5/24 a person being an AU on another's card.
I repeated what I'd read to her to make sure she was understanding what I meant.
She repeated the same response.
I asked, "Are you sure about that because it contradicts what I'm reading online?"
She says, "I'm pretty sure but let me check with my supervisor"
Put me on hold
Returned to say that supervisor backed up what she had said -- Chase doesn't count you being an AU as one of your 5/24

Who do you believe????

Here is my take. You wouldn't get an instant online approval because the computer analyzing your credit report can't differentiate between your own accounts and AU accounts. But once you get a pending notice or a denial, call Chase and tell them you aren't financially responsible for paying the card(s) you're an AU on and they'll take them out of the equation.

Definitely concentrate on what you will need for France. I would look at which hotel chains are offered in the cities you will be traveling to. It sounds like you have already done some of this research. In Paris you will find everything, but other smaller cities may not have a Hilton or a Marriott for example or if they do they may be inconveniently located near the airport so not practical for sightseeing in town. Once you figure out which hotels chains offer the best options for you, then go for those cards. For me the benefits of the CSR or the CSP is that I can book hotels through the Chase travel portal that may not be chain hotels. It opens up more options for you. Maybe one of you can get the CSR for the global entry for your daughter and the other gets the CSP. The AF for the CSP is waived the first year. Plus, you can transfer points to each other so you would end up with over 100K points with Chase that would be worth $1,500 if you book on their portal. It's not a bad deal!

Another tip about hotels in Europe...when we were recently trying to book hotels in Italy with points we were running into problems because we needed a room that could accommodate the 3 of us (me, DH, DS9). I would find availability when I put in two people but it would disappear or charge a hefty fee for an extra person. But, if you contact the hotel, they may be able to accommodate your daughter for free. We called the JW Marriott in Venice and they told us that we could book the room for two and they provide a rollaway at no charge for children under 12.

Good luck with your trip planning!

I keep saying, "After this one we'll slow down for a while", but then I see how many points or miles I'm missing out on and I've got to go for JUST. ONE. MORE. ::yes::

Me too... Remaining wedding and honeymoon expenses over the next few months, plus my car repair ($500 deductible plus $3000 from insurance) adds up to almost $9000. And we've got all of the cash saved up already just sitting there, so not earning points/miles has me like :scared:

Decisions decisions... DF is at 5/24 until November, and I am until June 2018, unless I can get Chase to drop our AMEX AU accounts which are closed. Right now our only travel plans are WDW in September and January, and DLR in April. We're pretty happy with our $100 a night non-chain hotel at DLR that's a 10 minute walk from the gate. I'm thinking about SPG points for more excuses for WDW... I mean, if the flights/hotels are basically free I wouldn't feel bad having an AP again... Here Disney, take all of my money!

ETA: I imagine Chase is going to know about my SW Plus card, even though it's not on my credit report yet.

Sounds like a plan!

I'd like to know where dh and I stand as far as the chase 5/24 rule. Rather than rely on memory or calling a bunch of cards cust Serv #s......what is a reputable free credit report site to use?

I always liked Credit Karma because you could sort by date... but when I logged into mine this morning that feature was gone, the whole site layout was different. It was the old layout on my fiance's account this morning :confused3

It's the "annualcreditreport"(.com) site - you can look at each of the three bureaus up to 1 time a year. I just did this yesterday for DH and I to check. I only pulled up one bureau each to count for now.

I can't seem to stop either. The expenses never end (ours are mostly house remodeling and medical) so why not earn some nice travel benefits while paying what I am already going to pay :)

I don't like the new credit Karma layout either. I tried to navigate my way around a couple of days ago and it is much harder to use now.

OMG, I was approved! I have been all knotted up about my recon call all weekend, feeling like I had possibly jeopardized my relationship with Chase. I was actually considering withdrawing my application if it was still pending this morning and waiting until my LLC is up and running to have actual numbers I could back up. I called the status line one more time to check before I talked to a rep and it said, "Congratulations, you've been approved!" Totally shocked. Now I'm going to be paranoid using it for anything besides shipping fees, and yet I'm going to have to pay my mortgage via Plastiq a couple of times to meet the min spend. I realize I'm probably overreacting, but this process has not helped my anxiety levels. :)

Something weird happened with my watched threads, and I missed this. CONGRATULATIONS! :)

when i applied for my chase SW card a month ago, it asked me if i had a previous RR number. now my previous points and bonus points are on the same account.
